Electric Trailer Jack Extends Fine But Does not Easily Retract

Question:

My Lipper trailer jack works fine when extending but occasionally stalls when retracting. It makes a sound like it wants to retact but nothing happens. I have to try several times, then it finally catches and starts down. Could this be a bad switch or a bigger problem?

If it runs when you push the retract switch then it likely is not the switch though it would not hurt to clean the contacts on the inside. It sounds like the jack has been over extended at some point which can damage the threads on the nut and/or screw on the inside. Try raising the jack about half way and then retracting it. If it works fine then that is probably the issue.

If the jack continues to have problems then there may be a problem with the motor/gears. Either way, damaged threads, or motor/gear problem, I advise replacing the jack.

I think the best value for an A-frame tongue jack is the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR which is rated for 4500 pounds of tongue weight. This is 1000 pounds more than other models, and even though you may not need this much capacity, you will find that the jack motor runs quick and effortlessly. This will add years to its life. This jack also has a unique clutch that prevents damage from overextending or retracting the jack foot - the most common reason for jack failure. I also like that is has a generous 23" lift, including a time-saving drop-foot. It includes LED lights for operating the hitch in the dark, and a built-in bullseye leveling bubble.
