A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.
Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.
It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.
Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Jack can be welded or bolted onto any A-frame trailer.Installed this replacement jack easily. But not happy with the emergency backup hand crank option. A 3/8 socket is provided to fit the top of the jack but it requires a 3/8 socket wrench to operate. My old jack had it's own substantial wrench. If you don't plan ahead for loss of the electrical facet of the jack, you could be in trouble.
Gears failed in less than a year of occasional use. Trailer has a 2800lb tongue weight when loaded.
This seems to be a decent tongue jack and unlike some others I've tried (see below), it still allows the liftgate on my SUV to open.
My low review is due to etrailer. I ordered a tongue jack from Azn and got an open box with a defective light that failed after two uses. Returned that and bought a tongue jack from HFT, and they brought out an obviously-returned, badly-taped up, ripped box pile of junk. Returned that and decided to take the plunge and buy a more expensive model from etrailer thinking I'd be getting a good quality item even if it cost a bit more.
But nooo... these guys did the same thing! Opened the box, and wires were wadded up and cut different lengths on the ends, just a handful of tell-tale signs that this was a used item. I needed to use the trailer, so I had to resort to installing it. It works, but how do I know what the previous owner did. I feel like I'm sitting on a ticking time bomb. Won't be buying anything else from etrailer again anytime soon.
