How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Installed this replacement jack easily. But not happy with the emergency backup hand crank option. A 3/8 socket is provided to fit the top of the jack but it requires a 3/8 socket wrench to operate. My old jack had it's own substantial wrench. If you don't plan ahead for loss of the electrical facet of the jack, you could be in trouble.

Gears failed in less than a year of occasional use. Trailer has a 2800lb tongue weight when loaded.

This seems to be a decent tongue jack and unlike some others I've tried (see below), it still allows the liftgate on my SUV to open.

My low review is due to etrailer.  I ordered a tongue jack from Azn and got an open box with a defective light that failed after two uses.  Returned that and bought a tongue jack from HFT, and they brought out an obviously-returned, badly-taped up, ripped box pile of junk.  Returned that and decided to take the plunge and buy a more expensive model from etrailer thinking I'd be getting a good quality item even if it cost a bit more.

But nooo... these guys did the same thing!  Opened the box, and wires were wadded up and cut different lengths on the ends, just a handful of tell-tale signs that this was a used item.  I needed to use the trailer, so I had to resort to installing it.  It works, but how do I know what the previous owner did.  I feel like I'm sitting on a ticking time bomb.  Won't be buying anything else from etrailer again anytime soon.

like the unit it was easy to install

by:

It's just like the one we had on our trailer. It will be an easy installation.

by:

Much better tongue jack then what came with the RV from manufacturing.

by:

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For A 4,000lb Trailer That Isn't Noisy
If you're dealing with a lot of sway then a friction-style WDH, like the Fastway E3 # FA92-00-0600, will give you the best support, but you'll have to deal with a lot of noise. We don't currently offer the Andersen WDH so I can't really speak to its effectiveness but the we do offer a few chain hanger style WDH's that can offer you more support and be a bit quieter. One that I really like is the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BXW0550. This hitch is going to include...

  • Replacement Tongue Jack for a Coachmen Catalina 263RLS 50th Anniversary Edition
We have a great option for you. Unfortunately we do not have anything that tells us what jack you currently have but from your make and model it looks like you need an A-frame jack. I recommend the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF97FR. The Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF97FR will fit 2" or 2-1/4" spacing, has 23-1/2" of total lift (combination of screw travel and drop leg) and can lift up to 3,500 lbs which will be more than enough for your 5,700 lb. dry trailer because the weight...

  • Can Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack Pull Power From Tow Vehicle
Yes, you can connect the ground wire to your trailer wiring and then the 12V power wire from the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF97FR to the 12V supply pin on your trailer 7-Way (11 o'clock pin when you're looking at the face of the 7-Way). If you'd like to avoid the hardwiring we have the Electric Jack # EJ-3527-BBX which comes with a 7-Way connector so when you need to use the jack you just plug it into your tow vehicle in place of your trailer and you're good to go! • Troubleshooting Lippert Electric Jack Extending But Not Retracting
The first step in troubleshooting an electric trailer jack like your Lippert Electric Trailer Jack with Footplate # LC285318 is to use the manual override instead of the power to see if the issue is mechanical or with power. If you're able to get the leg to retract manually then the issue is with the power but if you aren't able to get the leg to manually retract then it sounds like you may have overextended the jack and the leg is malfunctioning. Should the problem be mechanical (the...

  • Best Solution For Gaining Tail Gate Clearance On A-Frame Trailer Tongue Jack
Since the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF97FR has a triangular bolt pattern it would rotate the jack 120 degrees and may or may not work for your application. There are other jacks which have multiple mounting patterns on the flange like the Phoenix # UF38-944040 which will allow for 90 degree placement on the jack. A much simpler option I find is to use an extended Ball Mount # BH20 or a extended Drop Shank # EQ90-02-4600 if you have a weight distribution hitch. This means no mater...
