Video Transcript for Yakima HoldUp Bike Racks Tongue Review

Hi everyone. It's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today, we'll be taking a look at the replacement shank or tongue for your Yakima HoldUp bike racks right here at etrailer. So, if you have the Yakima HoldUp bike rack, and remember this is the one that has the black paint on it and not the gray, those are slightly older, then what may happen over time is there may be some wear and tear that happens to the tongue or the shank on your bike rack. Or you might have the inch and a quarter shank and just wanna upgrade to a two inch one because you have a two inch hitch receiver. Whatever reason there may be for it, we do have the replacement part for that.

So, through this video, I'm gonna guide you through the process of installing it as well as explain what it's used for. So, the Yakima HoldUp 2 can be upgraded to a four-bike bike rack with the add-on but it has some different parts involved. So, if you want to replace your bike rack with something that is used for that, let's say, you have the inch and a quarter and you wanna add it on to two so you can get four, what you need for that is the actual replacement spine plus shank. But if you wanna stick with the Yakima HoldUp 2 and just replace from your inch and a quarter to a two inch, then all you need is this right here, which is the replacement shank. So, this includes the replacement shank itself plus this bright red bolt right over here.

It does not include the bolts that hold the spine to the shank or the anti-rattle bolt. So, if those are also maybe broken, maybe you've cross threaded the anti-rattle area, you will need to replace that too. So, some other things you may need for this process is I have a 24 millimeter wrench as well as two 3/4 inch wrenches in order to install this replacement part. So, let's take a look at that process. So, here we have our new replacement shank and then we have our old shank right beside it.

So, you can already see the difference we have. Our paint's been scuffed up a little bit. We have a little bit of dirt on it and dust, so you can see why we needed replacing. Now, what might also happen is maybe you've cross threaded some bolts, or you've cross threaded some of the threads inside, and that's why you need to replace this shank. So, I took it off of our original Yakima HoldUp bike rack.

So, what you need to do is remove this bolt on top, and this uses a 3/4 inch wrench. With that bolt removed, you can then remove the original shank and then prep your new one. So, this is gonna be the new one and it includes this bolt. So, this is going to thread right into the shank itself. So, this is the new bolt and this is the old bolt. It may take a little bit of effort to remove this, but notice how some of our threads we're kind of cross threaded just because of improperly being put in there. So, definitely worth replacing it with this nice and shiny new one. So, this threads right into there, and it may be kind of tricky at first. Just try to hand thread it as far as you can. And then once you can't thread it down by hand anymore, use a 24 millimeter wrench just like this. And that's what you'll use to just line it up with the flat parts on that bolt and tighten it down. The next step is to attach the new shank to our older bike rack. Now, I could just lift this up and then put the bolt right in, but to make it easier on myself, I'm gonna just put it into a hitch receiver. You can do this at home in the hitch receiver on your car. So, I'm just gonna fit this into this hitch receiver. Next, we're gonna lift this onto our shank. So, it's kind of on the heavier side, so just be mindful of that. So, then we're gonna use this bolt to hold our spine into place. So, this goes in through the top hole. You are gonna have to lift up on the bike rack though just to get parallel as you thread that through. Once you get the bolt through just enough so it can now support itself, just use a 3/4 inch socket or wrench to tighten it down. You're gonna need two 3/4 inch wrenches just because there is a bolt that goes on the other end and that needs to be tightened down too. Once you confirm that all your bolts are tightened down, that's it for the install process. You now have a brand new shank or a tongue on your Yakima HoldUp bike rack. And that was a look here at the replacement shank or tongue for your Yakima HoldUp bike racks right here at etrailer. My name is Evangeline and I hope you enjoyed the journey..

This is an excellent item that came with both the pin and the threaded piece inside the hitch shank for the bolt. The pin on my original shank piece broke, and Yakima has redesigned this for an interchangeable pin, therefore I had to order a new shank, which came with the new pin as mentioned. A great value for a replacement for the Yakima HoldUp bike rack.

I got the new hitch to fix the problem I was having with the old one where the locking mechanism didn’t stay put. This seems to fix the problem with a better locking hinge. The hitch did come with the stabilizer insert, even though it was advertised as not included. The service team was super proactive with my order and contacting me about the status and cancellation of the extra part that wasn’t needed.

Yakima Holdup Bike Rack Hitch Shank up size from 11/4"to 2" for 2" receiver fits very well. Slot Pin was easy to install & the the Bolt that connects Shank to Rack fit. But the threaded bolt that holds shank to the 2" receiver is not the same diameter 1-1/4". I ordered the shank without the bolt as I was told it would match and no need to order a new matching bolt. Because its just a bolt I need to order a bolt and pay for shipping. Shank should include new bolts and nuts, saving time and money. I'm currently using a slip pin for the connection and a hitch derattled bought for trailer use. I Wouldn't make a point of it but I did ask before ordering.

Having used my brothers rack I was determined to get the same Yakima stand up rack. Found one on Craigslist just months old for a great savings but it had an 1.25 hitch. I bought an adapter but it just had to much slop. Found on the website a changeover modification to 2 inch so I ordered it. It came within 2 weeks and true to the reviews it was a 5 minute job. After ordering the part I could have bought a new rack but then I would not have been able to help someone out of a tough spot.

Great tutorial video. Installation was a breeze! Thanks for carrying this part. Etrailer.com has always been a pleasure to work with. Great communication and fast shipping! If you can suspend your rack like the attached photo you will be able to swap out in less than 5 minutes.

by:

Paul B was very helpful over the phone and getting my packages out fast so that I can get the parts replaced. Super easy to work with and was very understanding to my situation. Will definitely use etrailer in the future!

Works as advertised to change my 1.25" Yakima Holdout compatible with the 2" hitch on my new vehicle. One thing of note however is that this did NOT come with the hitch bolt to attach it to the 2" hitch of my new vehicle and the bolt that had come with my 1.25" rack is not interchangeable with this one. This created an inconvenience when I tried to use it the first time because I couldn't attach it to my hitch until I called Yakima and had them send out the appropriate size hitch bolt. IF you order this, be sure to also order the hitch bolt for a 2" tongue as well.

Still working fine and looking like new.

by:

Heavy duty perfect fit
This will increase
the weight I can carry on my rack
Very satisfied

by:

Not a big deal, no directions but it was pretty easy to figure out, glad I am handy and already had the right tools. A bit disappointed that it did not already come with the correct hitch pin since one purchases this to modify from 1.25 in to a 2 in receiver. So now it sits in the garage until I get the correct pin and pay the shipping which costs just as much as the bolt.

Unfortunately the hitch pin is not included. You will have to order part # Y8880128.

Exactly what I needed to upgrade my rack to fit on my new car. Just don't forget the drawbar pin, as that is a separate item.

Etrailer was great as part #8880580 arrived in a timely manner, and I was pleased with the ability of etrailer's web page to help me figure out my needs. My old Yakima 2 bike tray style bike carrier needed to fit into the 2 inch hitch of my new vehicle instead of the 1 1/4 inch hitch of my old vehicle. Yakima's replacement tongue part 8880580 gets swapped with the matching part on my old carrier, and this is where Yakima proved frustrating. The through hole on part 8880580 used for bolting the new tongue on to the body of the carrier was not cleanly made and required drilling to allow the mounting bolt to pass through. I needed to reuse my existing mounting bolt and nut, and for the price of 8880580 a new bolt and nut would have been considerate. A new spring loaded pin was provided, but the threaded boss I needed to screw the pin into was filled with welding splatter. I was using an adjustable wrench to thread the pin but decided to stop as the resistance was too high. The threaded hole was about an inch in diameter and way bigger than any of my taps, so I used small screwdrivers to laboriously pick out the worst of the splatter. The pin threaded in more smoothly, but again for the price I was not entirely pleased. Thanks to the etrailer web page I knew to order Y8890200, which is a longer hitch bolt as the old 1 1/4 hitch sized bolt would be too short for the 2 inch hitch. The new tongue and hitch bolt ultimately worked, but Yakima was sloppy in manufacturing my part 8880580, and installation required more time and effort than should have been necessary.

by:

easy ordering, arrived quickly, customer comments alerted me to ordering a pin as well. All in all a great experience.

by:

Just what I needed. I had a 1/4" hitch Yakima Hold Up bike rack . Was having a hard time finding an adapter to fit (either too loose or too tight) to go up to a 2' inch hitch, Finally called customer service at Yakima. They do not advise using an adapter as the weight of the sleeve built for a 1/4' hitch does not support the hitch mount for 2" inch. They gave me the part number and recommended etrailer. Fast and easy online and delivered as expected. Sleeve fits perfect and no play in the hitch makes me feel more comfortable with bikes in tow. I do recommend getting the pin to fit the 2" as the pin I had for the 1/4" did not work. Happy Trails !

by:

Yes, I Exchanged the 11/4 Yakima Tongue for a 2 inch Tongue. I was just about thinking of ordering a completely new Bike rack system and selling my old one, Then I thought how long I have used my Yakima Hold-Up Bike Rack, on so many rides, It's sturdy, It's dependable, and you can order parts quite reasonably with Yakima, thru etrailers. I would be a fool to part with it. If it's not broke why fix it. Thank-you eTrailers once again in having what I needed to to make the transition go so smoothly. Hope to have lasting partnership with your Company.

I was able to order exactly the parts I needed (after calling your staff) to switch my bike rack from a small trailer hitch on my old Acura to a standard size hitch on my new pickup truck. I installed it with the new parts the day it promptly arrived. You guys are great!!

by:

etrailer shipped very quick with a great price. Was easy to switch out for the 1-1/4” tongue on our Hold Up hitch rack. However, the distance between the hitch pin hole and the end of the tongue is longer than the previous version. As a result, the tongue hits the spare tire behind the hitch before the pin holes line up on our 4Runner. I guess I’ll leave it on the other car now.

by:

Works very well. Fits the 2” hitch. Solid piece of metal.
Although the entire platform bike rack could weigh a few pounds less. Less weight would make this rack even better.

by:

Will helped me determine the correct part I needed after I ordered a piece that didn't work. The description for first part I ordered, tongue release pin, said it would work on my "Yakima HoldUp 2" bicycle rack so I ordered it. After receiving it and realizing it would not work I dug deeper, and with Will's help, found out that the rack design was modified in 2016 to use a different design pin, I needed the discontinued version. Will was great and contacted Yakima then explained the details and helped me find the right tongue which came with the "updated" pin. The part (tongue) required me to drill out the hole a tiny bit (possibly burrs/sloppy job during manufacture) in order to allow it to accommodate the original bolt that holds the tongue onto the rack.

by:

We traded cars. The old car had a11/4" receiver for the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack. The new car has a 2" receiver. The best price was at etrailer and they shipped the 2"replacement tongue the same day as ordered.

by:

Worked as expected. Easy to in stall. Now my rack will work on either 1.25 inch or 2 inch hitches.

by:

Purchased to interchange with 1.25 tongue for Yakima HoldUp. It's also an upgrade that now I can use 2" tongue and setup to carry 4 bikes. Great price and fast shipping.

by:

Works great! But make sure you also order the replacement hitch bolt if you are doing the conversion from the 1.25 to the 2" because it doesn't come with this necessary piece!

by:

Received the extension today and installed it. I am very pleased with the product, and the retailer service. Glad I found you guys. Best wishes for continued success.

by:

Great fit just what I needed. As always super easy and efficient services with etrailer!
