Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

After a lot of research with the help of etrailer support I purchased the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit K2HR712 and installed on a 2013 Dutchmen Rubicon 2900 with 7K lippert axles to replace the 13” Electric drum brakes. I discovered any questions about whether the disc hubs would fit my axle was eliminated when I realized I just had to verify the wheel bearing numbers for the disc hubs were the same as what was on my axles. (bearings, caps and seals do not come with the kit and need to be ordered separately).
My trailer had dual axles, the disc kits came in separate boxes that did fairly well in shipping, nothing poking out of the boxes or anything. Parts matched and fitted without any problems. Again, etrailer support was very helpful in getting the correct parts and any questions I had during the installation. I could have done this myself however I choose to have a brake tech do the hydraulic lines and bleed the system out. Very satisfied with the product and support. Tried to upload pictures but kept getting errors.

Kodiak disc brakes are great. They are still doing the great job they did from day one. these will stop the trailer during panic stop situations which was something I could have never counted on my elect brakes to do.

by:

The product was very good and fit as I thought. It would be important to ensure you get the right parts as not every trailer is the same. Also the Kodiak directions are terrible, if you know anything about brakes then it still should be easy, but there are a few things that need to be checked while installing

IM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE WHEEL LUGS. I HAVE 916 STUDS NOW BUT THE KITS ALL COME WITH 1/2 STUDS. WILL MY 16 INCH ALUMINUM WHEELS STILL BOLT ONTO THE 1/2 LUGS? IM SWITCHING FROM ELECTRIC OVER TO DISC BRAKES.

Patrick B.

5/28/2013

It should not be a problem so long as you have the proper size lug nuts to match the studs on on the rotors. I looked at all of the 16 inch, 8 on 6.5, aluminum wheels that we carry and they are all either for 1/2-20 studs or they will work with both 1/2-20 and 9/16-18. We do not have any of these wheels that will only fit 9/16-18.

  • Recommended Electric Over hydraulic Actuator For Disc Brakes On Tri-Axle Car Hauler
Adding electric over hydraulic brakes on your Kaufman trailer can give you a better braking system than hydraulic surge or straight electric brakes. If you have hydraulic surge brakes on the trailer, you will either need to replace the surge coupler or lock it so the surge feature is not active. The hydraulic actuator I recommend for your trailer is the Titan BrakeRite I Plug and Play Electric-Hydraulic Actuator Kit, part # T4813102. This actuator features 1500 hydraulic psi, and should...

  • Disc Brake Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer That Uses 8-Lug Wheels on 6000-lb Dexter Axles
The key to selecting disk brakes for your 5th wheel is to match up the bolt pattern (in your case 8-on-6-1/2) as well as the brake flange mounting hole pattern, bearing set and axle weight capacity. It is fine to use a brake kit rated higher than your axle capacity, but never one rated lower. You need to match your hub's bearings to the new kit to ensure that the hub/rotor assemblies will fit your spindles. The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR712 that you referenced has the bolt pattern and...

If you have # 25580 inner bearings and # 14125A inner bearings, 16 inch or larger wheels with an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern, this kit will work. • Adding Disc Brakes to a 5th Wheel Trailer with Tandem 7,000 Pound Axles
Since you are going from electric to hydraulic brakes on a 5th wheel trailer you will need to have an electric over hydraulic system. The various components will need to be chosen separately. For the brakes themselves I recommend the Kodiak Dacromet set # K2HR712D. This kit fits one axle so for 2 braking axles you would need 2 kits. • Are Disc Trailer Brakes Wider or Narrower than Drum Brakes When Considering Frame Clearance
Disc brake setups in general are smaller than drum brakes. Drums need to be wide to allow as much contact for the shoes/pads of the assemblies but since disc brakes squeeze a rotor that turns they don't have to be as wide to be as efficient. So basically if you have clearance now for drum brakes going to a disc brake kit like the # K2HR712 would also clear.
