Adding Disc Brakes to a 5th Wheel Trailer with Tandem 7,000 Pound Axles

Question:

I am looking to convert my electric drum brakes tandem axle fifth wheel toyhauler with 7000 lb 8 lug EZ lube axles to disc. Is there a complete kit I can buy or do I need to buy everything separately?

Since you are going from electric to hydraulic brakes on a 5th wheel trailer you will need to have an electric over hydraulic system. The various components will need to be chosen separately. For the brakes themselves I recommend the Kodiak Dacromet set # K2HR712D. This kit fits one axle so for 2 braking axles you would need 2 kits. This kit takes 2 of inner bearing # 25580 and 2 of outer bearing # 14125A with seal # RG06-070 (a set of 2). Check to make sure your existing hubs use these bearings. If not let me know the bearing numbers you have.

So for the above brakes you will need:

2 of # K2HR712D
4 of # 25580
4 of # 14125A
2 of # RG06-070

You will also need brake lines to go from the electric over hydraulic actuator to the brakes. For a 24 foot tandem axle kit use # HS496-252.

For the actuator itself I recommend the Hydrastar 1600 psi model # HBA16. This is one of the most popular options available because of how well it works and its reliability.

On the vehicle side you will need to have a brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes such as the P2 # 90885 or the P3 # 90195. If you have a factory brake controller it would need to have an electric over hydraulic mode. If it does not but you have a Ford or Chevy truck you can use adapter # HBA-CAM to get the factory controller to work with the actuator.

I have included a link to our help article on adding electric over hydraulic disc brakes to a trailer.
