  • Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

    Over-the-Hub Rotor

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

    Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

    Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 7-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 11" Rotor - 8 on 6.5 - E-Coat - Leaf Spring - 12K - Dexter/Lippert - K2R1258L12

Average Customer Rating:  4.2 out of 5 stars   (20 Customer Reviews)

Great brake kit. Installation was easy. I would however recommend 90° angled brake lines for the direct caliper connection. The rubber hose provided for connection to the calipers extends horizontally inwards from the caliper and can contact the frame rail of low profile gooseneck flatbed trailers under articulation and compression of the suspension... I used short bendable steel brake lines to increase the clearance and then connect with the rubber brake lines to avoid this problem. Overall 5 out of 5 stars for this kit. The braking power is amazing.

Even though I gave you the correct trailer information, You guys sent the wrong equipment, I had it installed and it didn't work correctly, when I let your guys know, they wouldn't take it back because it was considered used. I lost over a $xxxx bucks??

by:

Excellent product, easy install, all parts fit as they should. I put appx 150000 miles on the system.
It performs outstanding. Major improvement over
electric drum brakes.

by:

I called first to see if a brake kit would fit my trailer. They told me yes. I ordered the brake kit. When I received the kit it was missing pieces so I called Angela W. She was very rude, arrogant, and clearly doesn't know what she's talking about. NO HELP. Turns out the brake kit was not compatible with my trailer like they said it was. I called and told them I needed to send back the kit that came in three boxes and they sent me a label for 1 box. While at the ups store I waited for over 45 minutes on hold and ended up having to pay to ship one of the boxes. $200! I called them early the next day and they told me they would not be reimbursing me for the shipping. Horrible customer service and horrible service. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

by:

Unfortunately the kit i purchased did not fit the axles i specified in the order. The mechanic was not able to let me know until August. The boxes deteriorated while at the shop and I am not sure it is possible to ship them back in their current condition.

Kodiak disc brakes for 12k axles are junk. Impossible to maintain. Archaic design. The parts you provided were fine. Kodiak needs to redesign these brakes. No reason the brakes shouldnt last 50000 miles

  • What Components Are Needed To Convert Electric to Hydraulic Disc Brakes On 12K Trailer
I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains everything that is needed when adding hydraulic disc brakes to your trailer. In addition to a kit like part # K2R1258L12 you will need to make sure you have the right brake mount flange, and you will need to add hydraulic brake lines to your trailer. You will also need a surge brake actuator like part # T4750820 installed on your trailer frame. I have attached links to the brake lines we offer, and to the actuators we offer.

  • Replacement Disc Brake Kit for a Dexter 12K Axle
The correct Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for a Dexter 12K Axle is part # K2R1258L12, not part # K2R1058D11E. I spoke with Dexter and they stated the latter would only work if you have a Dexter Hub 008-430-03. It looks like the brake mounting flange bolt pattern, rotor diameter, and calipers are the same between the above two kits but I again would not be able to confirm direct compatibility unless using the Dexter Hub 008-430-03.

  • Converting Drum Brakes On A Dexter Military Trailer Axle With 8 On 6-1/2
I would be happy to help you choose the correct brake setup for your Dexter Torflex Axle, however there are no manufacturers that currently make electric disc brakes. All disc brakes are powered by a hydraulic cylinder. If you wish to use a disc brake setup controlled by an in-cab brake controller, you will want to consider the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes part # HBA16 and an electric brake controller such as the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller...

  • Kodiak Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for Trailer with Dexter Torflex 3,500 lb Axles
Depends on the size of your wheels what Kodiak disc brake kit you'll need is. If you have a 14 inch or larger diameter wheel I would recommend the Dacromet and Stainless kit part # K2HR35DS or if you have smaller wheels than that you'd want the part # K2HR35D-8. These are totally compatible with Dexter Torflex axles also.

  • Disc Brake Kit and Hubs For 12,000LB Dexter General Duty Trailer Axles
The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1258L12 specifically is made for 12,000lb standard duty Dexter and Lippert axles. Each kit provides the rotor and caliper for one axle. This brake kit will mount to your Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-214-8UC1. If you can provide me with additional information about your trailer and the brakes you have I can help you identify any other parts such as disc brake actuator or brake lines that you may also need.

As long as your Dexter 12k axles have idler hubs installed on them Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1258L12 is a confirmed fit that would work well. An idler hub is a hub that does not have a brake drum or rotor built into it.

The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1258L12 you referenced is a fit for 12,000-lb Dexter and Lippert axles with leaf springs. Keep in mind your current idler hubs need to have an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern and a 7-bolt brake flange. If you are not sure what bolt pattern you have I've added a link on this page to a help article that explains how to determine your bolt pattern. I have also added a link to a help article on adding disc brakes which you may find useful.
