Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

The axles that I ordered last year are still working out great. But even better than the parts was the service I got from etrailer. It was so great working with a company who took the time to listen to my project and help me get the right parts I needed, especially coming right off the heels of a terrible experience dealing with bad information and wrong parts from a competitor. Even with some damages in shipping, the returns/ and replacements were no hassle, with most issues being quickly resolved and not even costing me any additional downtime. As a contractor keeping a small fleet rolling, your competency and professionalism have made me a customer for life!! You guys at etrailer will be my first stop for trailer parts.

Welds looked good however the assembler failed to rotationally align the weld on spindle/brake mounts properly. One was about 3 degrees off and the other side was an 9.5 degrees from the 12 oclock position. Not sure about the thickness of the tube. Kind of strange to look at when the top of the brake system is not at 12 oclock. Found this after I removed the spring pads on this 2.1 degree camber axle so I had to jig the tube to fine zero toe to locate the new pads as the 2.1 camber tube changes wheel alignment depending on the bend/ springpad relationship. Not sure the AVG JOE is going to be able to move the spring pads when the brake mounts can't be used as a reliable ref point. If the toe is off from improper pad rotational location. the trailer will eat tires at best or worse cause a loss of controlled tracking and someone could get get killed.

by:

Replaced the old axles with these on my 7x16’ equipment trailer, been nothing but amazing since I’ve installed them. Hauled thousands of pounds since and with minor greasing and normal maintenance they’ve been great.

by:

So far performing well. Have not been able to use trailer yet as much as I wanted to, don't use the grease nipples. Its easy to regrease without.

  • Distance From Brake Flanges on Trailer Axle Beam 95" Long - 3,500 lbs
In regards to selecting the correct trailer axle either for replacement for addition, there are two measurements you'll need to consider. The distance between the spring centers from left to right on center and the distance between the hub face left to right on center. The Trailer Axle Beam part # e68GR for example measures 95" between the hub faces and 80" between the spring centers. The spring centers however can be moved and rewelded if needed. The distance between the brake mounting...

The Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles part # e68GR is made by Axle Tek and the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles part # 7359765 is made by Dexter. That said, they both have the same specs and features, you'll just save a bit of money with our house brand so that's what I recommend. That said, if you want to stick with the name brand item in Dexter, you won't be disappointed there either.

  • Solution for Replacement Hubs Using Obsolete 2585 Inner and 1380 Outer Bearing Combination
It looks like that bearing combination was used on 1940's and 1950's trailers. Unfortunately, it is now obsolete with no hubs available. Your best bet would be to replace the axle with spindles using a modern bearing combination. In order to find the right replacement axle you will need to know the axle capacity as well as the length of the axle. The length is the hub face to hub face measurement as shown in the diagram below. For example, if your axle measured 95" and had a 3,500 lb...

The P-11 on your Dexter axle indicates the plant number it was manufactured at. If you can find a serial number on your axle tag that could be used to identify the axle through Dexter. The spring center length on your current axle does not matter when it comes to finding a replacement. As long as the hub face measurement matches up you can adjust the spring center by cutting off the existing spring seats and welding on # TRSS238. • How to Find Replacement Axle for Hurricane HUR 2178 Boat Trailer
Finding a replacement axle will require measuring your current axle. Specifically, the hub face to hub face measurement. I would say based on the GVWR it is a 3,500 lb axle. It could possibly be a 3,000 lb axle depending on what they figured for tongue weight, but that would be obsolete so you're looking at 3,500 lbs either way. We only have two length options for 3,500 lb axles so I'll list them below. If you switch from a 3k axle you will also need new hubs. You can choose from the following:...

We do indeed carry axles with a 95 hub face and 80" spring center. Knowing that it is a 5 lug hub, you are likely dealing with a 3,500 lb rated axle. If you want to confirm this you could always measure the diameter of the axle tube. A 3,500 lb axle should have a 2-3/8" tube diameter. If it is a higher capacity it would be a 3" tube. Provided all of that checks out, you will need the following parts for an axle, brakes and hubs. Trailer Axle Beam # e68GR Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA...
