Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

Another helpful measurement to have is the flange-to-flange (C) length, which is measured from the outside of one brake flange to the outside of the one opposite. This length may be easy to obtain if you are replacing an axle, but it's important to note that this measurement is not the preferred method for determining which axle will best fit your trailer.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I ordered 2 axles snd 2 fenders on Wednesday and parts arrived on Friday at noon. Estimated ETA was 5 days. Parts were shipped same day i ordered. Parts arrived in perfect condition. I am very impressed with the super fast service, as well as being kept informed of every step. This was my first purchase from etrailer but I will definitely use them again for all my trailer needs. My only gripe, which was my fault, is in only ordered 1 Ubolt kit but I ordered 2 axles. It stands to reason if I orderedc1 ubolt kit and 2 axles it may have been an oversight on my part and a phone call or email to check if I needed 2 ubolt kits would have been nice.
I highly recommend them.

Highly recommend! I first made the mistake and ordered from “the other trailer parts outlet” so it took 10 days from my order to receive missing and beat up broken China made parts. The other place didn’t want to replace but wanted me to repair at my time and cost. I called etrailer, ordered on Monday, received on Wednesday. No damage as they actually package the parts up correctly. I got brand name parts too. Lesson learned. If you are on the fence or shopping around. Save yourself 10 days, 5 phone calls and hassle. Shop etrailer first.

Joann was very knowledgeable and very helpful.. my trailer axle and parts arrived on time and everything was in order..it doesn’t get any easier..

The wire that Dexter uses to run through the axles to connect to the brakes is not heavy enough. The brakes are wired with number 16 wire and they run 18 which is basically speaker wire through the axle and it burns through at the connection every time I dont understand why they run such cheap wire through the axle

I did reach out to Dexter and yes, the wire gauge that they run through the axle 18 gauge. We recommend bypassing their wiring and using 12 gauge wiring instead.

Great high quality axles! I installed two of these on a boat trailer with one brake and one idler hub. It was a rebuild from single to dual axles. All the parts were well organized and packaged well and free shipping- thanks etrailer! Good service and value all around. I hauled the boat about 100 miles today and it all works perfectly. A vast improvement in performance.

by:

I purchased this to replace a bent idler axle on an older Pequea utility trailer. I figured it made sense to upgrade to an axle with brakes while I was at it - and I was rewiring the trailer anyway so adding brake wires was no big deal as part of that project.

Installation was simple. I was a little worried about assembling the brakes and bearings just because I hadn't done it before, but I watched some videos and it was very easy. I've put around 1000 miles on it in the year I've had it and it's held up great so far.

All working well. As advertised. Recommend ETRAILER.

by:

Great axle, hardest part of install was measuring the pld axle. E-trailer does a great job with tutorials on all of the parts they sell.

by:

Five stars because of Hally. She is the only person that knew her job that I spoke to. Axle and brakes are going fine on my trailer.

by:

fast delivery thank you

by:

Axle seem good. The directions for assembly are apparently a copy of a copy of a copy..... ect, making them pretty difficult to read. Difficult enough that I missed the part about how deep to tap in your inside seal. Now we get to do it again.

by:

Excellent for all. Parts are great quality. Everything was shipped hassle free and quickly. The help videos are over the top. The only complaint I might have is that that marine grease sticks to everything (LOL). I really wish all internet sales services were as good.

Thank You

  • Determining Which Replacement Axle To Replace Bent Lippert 3500lb Axle on 2008 Starcraft Star Stream
We may have an option that will work for you, but you will want to remeasure your axle as the length is measured from hub face to hub face and not between the tips of the spindles. The closest option we have as a standard axle replacement would be the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Idler Hubs - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 89" Long - 3,500 lbs # 35545I-EZ-89 for an axle with the idler hubs, or # 35545E-ST-89 for an axle with electric brakes. Both options have the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern...

I can help you determine the weight rating of the axles on your 1983 Coachmen travel trailer but there are a lot of models out there and since your trailer is a pretty old model it is very possible that someone could have changed out the axles and there is no way of knowing if they actually put exact replacements on it (unless a record was kept of course). • Determining Correct Replacement Axles For Tandem Axle Trailer With Bent Axles
You will definitely need to replace both axles due to them being bent. With that said I would also go ahead and check the frame of the trailer and the suspension components for damage to make sure the trailer does not have any structural damage due to being overloaded enough to bend both axles. To measure for the correct replacements you will need to measure from hub face to hub face, and from spring center to spring center as shown in the included diagram. In addition you will need...

  • Tandem Axle Boat Trailer Tire Wear on Inside of Tire
Tire "scrubbing" like what you described does not typically only wear out the insides of a trailer tire. When trailer tires are worn more on the insides then anywhere else that indicates typically that the axle is being overloaded. Axles have a natural arch in them that arches up so that when they are under a load they are horizontal and you get even wear on your tires. Overloading your axle would mean that it is arching towards the ground some and would cause that inside wear. I recommend...

I can certainly point you in the right direction. I will start by saying that our "rule of thumb" is that we want at least 1" of clearance between the tire and the trailer frame. With the hub face currently at 48", you will want to go with an axle that is at least 50" hub face, if not a bit longer. 54" would be acceptable, but we would not want to go longer than that.   Unfortunately, we do not offer any axles that will be close to this size.
