Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch DL24104 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number DL24104. This is the Dutton-Lainson hand-winch cable with a safety hook. The cable itself is going to give us a 1/4" diameter. It's going to measure 50 feet long. It's going to have the forged steel hook on this end with the safety latch mechanism that is spring loaded. It's going to prevent accidental disconnecting or unhooking. This is a flexible 7 x 9 galvanized aircraft cable.

It is going to be suitable on Dutton-Lainson Hand Winches, up to a 3,500 pound capacity. It will work for StrongArm electric winches up to 3,000 pounds. It's going to have the safe working load limit for other applications of 1,400 pounds. Nice construction, very strong, and very durable. You can see here where the steel hook swivels around the cable.

Dutton-Lainson puts a nice steel plate in there. That's just going to prevent the cable from wearing or fraying. It's going to extend the life of the cable itself. Here on this end, you have the exposed cable end. This is going to be the end that gets anchored to the winch.

That's going to do it for our review of part number DL24104. This is the Dutton-Lainson hand winch cable with a safety hook. Again, you're going to have 50 feet in length. The cable diameter is 1/4". .

Hand winch cable with safety hook.

It is a great item pulling a race car into the trailer. Its holding up well and doing what it supposed too.

I installed this on my Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch P/N DL11001. Both are in my 20 foot enclosed trailer in case I have to pull in a vehicle that won't run. The winch cable worked perfectly when I pulled my 3000lb tractor into the trailer as a test. I am pleased with this purchase. Jameson assisted me in picking out this product.

by:

I love it George - very well made - I sprayed the cable I got with it - with lithium grease and after being outdoors for most of the year on my trailer it looks like new still! The worm gear set up with my high speed Milwaukee Fuel hammer drill (great torque - pro drill) works great.I use it to haul a small drift boat up and down steep inclines (drift boat for rivers - fishing) and it works well. I also added corrosion X grease to all of the winch's moving parts - New England weather is a good test for it.

Hand winch is strong, larger than expected, and built pretty heavy duty. One thing to note, the pawl (clicker) is only one sided, so it won't hold the load when letting cable out. It would be nice if it had an extra little tab to allow cranking in, cranking out, and neutral (line pull out) positions.

Also, I'm new to winches, but kind of wish it had a clutch on the cable to keep tension on the cable spool. When nothing is on the line, the tension on the spool unravels, causing the cable go all over the place, the first time i used it, I slightly pinched the cable (I had half the line payed out, and the slack on that part got bunched up when I started pulling in)

I went with a cable instead of strap so that I could use a snatch block pulley if i ever needed extra power, and also ordered a cable twice as long as what I needed to allow for looping back (using it on a utility/car trailer)

Looking back I should have went with the shorter cable so that the line would be all the way out when starting to winch. I might cut down the cable to a shorter length and eventually replace it with a strap. Another drawback i found with the cable is that it tends to wander all over the drum back over itself if you aren't careful causing a tangled mess, but I guess that happens on the power winches too.

Another accessory I wish they had was a heavy waterproof drawstring bag to slip over the winch when not in use. I made a removable pedestal using 2" receiver tube, so I plan to keep the winch indoors. but I really should grease up the cable and it would be nice to have a cover. (Might try to make a bag or have one made)

Overall I'm satisfied and the winch itself more than met my expectations. I was able to easily pull a 2003 Grand cherokee up the ramps onto my trailer with one hand and single line.

This winch has a lot of power, very smooth operation. It works great with my 1/2in battery powered drill. cable always winds perfect and tangle free. I use it to pull my 16ft jon boat out of the water on a makeshift ramp. the boat and motor is around 1000 lbs. its a very high quality winch and its made in the USA.

Everything arrived in nice big box, packed well. Looks like perfect replacement parts. Fast ship time.

So far the cables are fine and I had enough to fit both winches for our application.

by:

eTrailer is awesome. I ordered this product to place a Superwinch Terra cable and rolled on no problem.

by:

Was not easy to install properly - but now does the job.
When the trailer is parked outside cover it up so its not getting rained on - that will extent the life of that cable...

by:

Excellent. I probably could have used a much smaller cable, but it should handle any load I might have in the future.

by:

The product was exactly what I ordered, but the service was really great and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. My purchase arrived a couple days early and the invoice arrived on the day of purchase. I work with many many companies and yours for service is one of the best. Thanks for your help in obtaining this cable. Ken

  • High Capacity Hand Winch Recommendation for 10,000 lb Capacity
The highest capacity hand winch we have is the Dutton Lainson part # DL14881 which has a capacity of 3,500 lbs. So with three of these you'd have 10,500 lbs of winch capacity. For a cable with a matching capacity we have the part # DL24104 which is 50 feet in length.

  • Winch Recommendation for Lifting 900 lbs 20 Feet High
A winch that you could consider using is the Dutton-Lainson Brake Winch, # DL14964, which would allow you to lift the 900 lb load 20 feet, with the 50 foot hand winch cable, # DL24104. This winch has the advantage of less moving parts and is a bit more economical. The drawbacks to this winch are that the winch will be harder to crank and there are not two speeds to select from. If you are lifting from the floor to an elevated position you could also use a block and tackle setup. The force...

  • Brake Winch Recommendation for Lifting 500 lb Load Off Ground
You would want a Worm Gear Winch like the part # DL10954 that can be used as a hoist. Worm gear winches are really the only type of hand winch that is designed to work well with hoisting items off of the ground and suspending them. This winch has a 1,500 lb capacity so it would make easy work of your 500 lb load. For cable the part # DL24104 is 50 feet long and has more than enough capacity.

  • Best Type of Winch to Lift Truck Canopy
The type of winch to use for safely lifting your truck canopy is a worm gear winch. Worm gear winches are more powerful than ones that use planetary gears and with a worm gear winch the weight of the load cannot reverse the direction of pull. If you want an overhead mount we offer the 1500-lb Dutton-Lainson # DL10954 which includes a loop drive. You can use this with 50-foot cable # DL24104. • Is there a Wire Rope/Cable that is Between 25 and 50 Feet Long for Dutton Lainson Worm Gear Winch
Dutton Lainson winch # DL11004 is designed to accept a strap and the longest strap available is 25 feet. Since that is not going to be long enough I recommend looking at a different worm gear winch such as # DL11001. However, the wire ropes for these winches go from 25 feet up to 50 feet with nothing in between. It is better to have too much line than not enough so if you go with this winch I recommend wire rope # DL24104.

  • Hand Winch Recommendation that has a Hex Drive for a Drill
Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15721 does not have a hex head that is fixed and would allow you to use an electric drill attachment. For that I recommend using worm gear winch # DL11001 which does have a hex drive and you can use a 5/8 inch socket attachment to power the load in or out. Worm gear winches are brake winches so when you stop turning the drum, either with the handle or a drill, it will hold the load. There is also no minimum load required. This winch can accept up to a 82 foot...

  • Recommendation for a Winch to Load a Harley Davidson Motorcycle into a Cargo Trailer
You would need to consult a qualified welder to have a mount fabricated that will allow you rotate the handle 360 degrees on a hand winch. We do not stock any bolt on parts that are heavy enough to be used to mount a winch safely in this case, and you would need to tie the mount into the trailer frame for stability. We have a Universal Hand Winch Right Angle Mounting Bracket, item # DL24110, which would make the fabrication of the raised mount easier. An option I would look at, would be...

  • Winch Recommendation for Hoisting a Jeep Top to the Ceiling
Only one style of winch would I recommend for hoisting something from the ceiling. I recommend a worm gear winch, # DL10954, that you can mount on the ceiling and use an extension pole to turn the loop drive handle. Place this winch centered above where you would lift the top so you will not have to use pulley blocks to get a straight line pull. Worm gear winches will brake automatically if you release the handle which is nice. You will also need a secondary support system to actually...

  • Available Types of Electric and Hand Winches
Electric winches can require substantial battery power, but this will vary depending on the actual weight of the load. If you have access to your household AC power and an installation point that is protected from the elements you might prefer to avoid the battery and solar charger entirely with a winch like # DL25707. This winch does have the option to freewheel, but it features a lock to keep the winch from backing off. It will also accommodate up to 79 feet of 3/16 inch cable. The best option for that is a winch from Dutton-Lainson: - Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14881 The # DL14881 is a 3,500 lb capacity, 2-speed winch with a manual hand brake.
