Well built USA made. It will hold up to years of use. I will make a 3/8 rod with a hook on the end to operate the winch. I will use a battery drill motor to turn it. I am using this to open and close a 23 foot wide cloth awning,. I will be modifing it somewhat.

  • Unspooling or Reversing of Hand Winch with Loop Drive DL10974
This hand winch has a worm gear, which when turned, turns the gear. It cannot be reversed by the load, but simply stops when you stop turning. The reel will not unspool with added weight since there is no free spool mode. Just make sure the you don't go over the capacity of the winch and you should be fine.

  • Which Winch Should I Use to Pull a Small Sailboat out of the Water and Across Sandy Beach
As much as I'd love to recommend using something cool like an electric ATV winch similar to the Bulldog Utility Winch # BDW15008 , I think you'd be well served going with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL10974 . This is a worm gear hand winch that has a 2000-lb capacity. One of the things I love about this winch is that the loop drive lets you crank the winch with a power drill if you've got a cordless drill or an electrical outlet down by where you're storing it. To mount this winch,...

  • Can Synthetic Rope Replace Winch Cable on Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch
High strength synthetic ropes like the ones you are describing are not recommended for D-L winches. These ropes are extremely slippery and pose a high risk of severely damaging the winch’s reel and ultimately the winch as a whole. If you want to use the # DL10974 you will need to use a cable like the # DL24104.

  • How to Reverse the Winch Strap Feed from Top to Bottom on a Worm Gear or Standard Trailer Winch
To get the cable to come off of the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, item # DL10974, you would need to crank the winch until the cable is all the way unwound from the winch drum and then continue cranking in the same direction until the cable is wound back onto the drum in the opposite direction it was wound before. This will reverse the feed of the cable from top to bottom or vice versa and will also reverse the direction the handle needs to be turned to winch a load with the winch. If...

  • Recommended Hand Winch For Hoisting Piece of Steel Sculpture
You're certainly on the right track. The handle on a worm gear winch would indeed rotate in such a way that it wouldn't hit the tree. A worm gear also has the advantage of not freewheeling when you let go of the handle, so the load won't get away from you. The Dutton-Lainson # DL10974 worm gear winch you mentioned is a good choice, but the one problem with worm gear winches is the gear ratio. 40:1 is a common gear ratio for a worm gear winch. This means that the handle will need to be...
