Recommended Hand Winch For Pulling 300 lb Catamaran 60 Feet Across Beach

Question:

I am looking for a winch to pull a 300 lb catamaran up the beach from the surf to seawall. The distance at low tide can be 60 ft or more. When I spool out the cable to retrieve the boat I want the ratchet engaged so the spool doesnt freewheel. What do you recommend? Will the Dutton Lainson 1100lb do the job?

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish # DL15103 would work well for you. It has plenty of capacity, keeping in mind that the capacity of the winch decreases with each layer of cable that wraps around it. This winch does have the option to freewheel, but it features a lock to keep the winch from backing off. It will also accommodate up to 79 feet of 3/16 inch cable. The cable isn't included with the winch, and the longest length we carry is part # DL24104 for 50 feet. You should be able to find 3/16 inch cable sold by the foot at your local hardware store or home center.

I've linked you to an FAQ article about hand winches, as well as to a product demonstration video.
