Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch DL24100 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at Part Number DL24100. This is the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Cable. It's going to have the safety hook on one side, exposed cable end on the other. That way you can easily attach it to your winch. This is designed for hand-operated winches up to 3,500 pounds; For StrongArm electric winches up to 3,000 pounds. For all other applications, it's going to offer a safe working load limit of 1,400 pounds.

This is going to be 7 X 9, very flexible Galvanized aircraft cable. Very strong and very durable. Here on this end, we're going to have the forged steel hook. It's going to have the spring-loaded safety latch that's going to prevent accidental disconnecting or unhooking. They've put a nice steel plate around the inner part of the loop here.

That way, as the hook swivels around that opening, or around that connection point, it's not going to do any damage to the surfacing here on our cable. The cable itself is going to measure 25 feet in total length, and it's going to give us a diameter of a 1/4 of an inch. That's going to do it for our review of Part Number DL24100. This is the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Cable with the Safety Hook. It's going to offer a 1/4-inch diameter, giving us an overall length of 25 feet. .

Winch cable and hook.

Product as described. Fast shipping. Worked just fine on the winch of my boat trailer converted to utility trailer that I pull behind my Cub Cadet Challenger 750 side by side. Just what I needed for the trailer. Thanks.

by:

Bought this cable and hook combo about a year ago as part of a project to hoist our kayaks up out of the way in the garage. It was exactly as advertised, was high quality, and has performed flawlessly. Etrailer is my go-to source for anything related to trailers and similar equipment.

A year on, and the cable and hook accompanying the winch from Etrailer continues to perform flawlessly. No fraying, kinking or other issues. A quality product.

by:

I am very happy with Etrailer. This is my 3rd order in the past 4 years and all parts have to do with a early 70s shoreline boat trailer which carries a 1975 Seacraft Safari. The personnel are very helpful and shipping excellent. Very pleased with the tires and wheels I got in 2011. I will be finishing up installing the parts I got this year in the near future when I pull my boat. I will let you know if I have any issues.

by:

I followed the loading instructions...

The DL 11001 worm drive winch and this 1/4" cable make a great pair for mounting on a car hauler trailer, and the capability to use an electric drill motor to speed the process is a real plus. I especially like the self braking feature of the worm drive. I tested it after my trailer installation by cranking the cable taut, an letting it set for 3 days..... no relaxation in the cable whatsoever. It just stays put due to the huge mechanical advantage of the worm gear.

by:

The cable is as bad as the winch I bought. It is not very flexible because the strands are of the cheaper variety. It is already splaying and it was only wound once on the drum. Will not last.

by:

Had been looking for a 1/4" winch cable. This one fit my needs.

by:

Great cable to go with my winch purchase.
Top quality.

by:

The Winch Cable with Hook assemblies i ordered were exactly what I had ordered. The shipment arrived as promised and the quality is excellent. Thank You,E-Trailer for your prompt and curtious service. Before I purchase any product,I will check your Website and if you have the stuff I need will directly order from your website.

by:

Product arrived promptly, exactly as described and of good quality. Will continue to purchase items from etrailer. Excellent service.

by:

Product as advertised, worked good; delivery was very prompt.

by:

  • Best Brake Hand Winch to Replace Shelby 5351 Brake Winch
As of October 2016 Shelby is now owned by winch maker Dutton Lainson. My contact there advised that for the Shelby 5351 brake hand winch the repair kit is no longer available. Fulton's 1500-lb # F143100 is a reliable winch you can use with cable # DL24100. I have linked our main page for all brake hand winches that will allow you to select a new one with the capacity you need. Jut click on the filters on the page to choose singe- or two-speed operation and your preference for a wire rope...

  • Lighter Duty Worm Gear Winch Availability
The smallest rated worm gear winch we have is 1,500 lbs like the part # DL10950 that you referenced. While this is a bit overkill for the weight you need it would still work well. For a 25 foot long cable you'd then want the part # DL24100.

  • Recommended Brake Winch for 16-Foot Car Hauler Trailer
The best type of hand winch for your car trailer application is a brake winch. These provide a self-locking holding action to prevent a runaway load. Their planetary gears deliver easy and efficient cranking. A good option is the Fulton High Performance Hand Winch # F143100. This is rated for 1500-lbs, but it will be fine for your rolling load. If you prefer a heavier-duty winch consider the 2K-rated Dutton-Lainson # DL11001 and the cable/hook part # DL24100. Any winch must be installed...

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Light Loads
The best option we can offer for light loads is a worm gear winch since there are no minimum load requirements. For this, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL10950 and Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook part # DL24100. The load will be held in place whenever the handle is released.

  • What Size Wire Rope Does Dutton Lainson Winch DL15303 Use

  • Recommended Hand Winch for Low-Weight Lifting of Outdoor Grill
The best type of winch for your application is a worm gear winch like the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with Hex Drive # DL11001. I recommend this over a brake winch because it does not have a minimum load requirement, it allows you the option to use a power drill to operate it if you like, and it needs no mechanism to stop gear movement. With a worm gear winch unless you are cranking the handle (or using a drill) the winch simply cannot rotate. This is the best type of safety feature...

  • Winch Recommendation for Use as Ceiling Hoist for Loading Heavy Kayak
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch, # DL11001, will work great to hoist your 230 lb boat. The hex head allows you to use either the included handle or a heavy-duty 1/2 inch drill. Worm gear winches are great for hoisting objects because they do not have a free wheel option and the load cannot reverse the direction of the winch. For wire rope you would need the part # DL24100.

  • Floor Mount Winch Needed to Pull Powered Parachute Airplane Into Enclosed Trailer
We have exactly what you are looking for! The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL11004 has a hex drive topwind handle that you can operate by hand while it sits on the floor of your trailer or with a drill and a 5/8" socket. I recommend using the drill since the worm gear operates really slow. It takes 40 turns of the handles for 1 rotation of the drum. This winch is rated for 2,000 lbs so it will easily be able to pull your powered parachute airplane into your enclosed trailer....

  • Winch to Use for Vertical Lifting Application
ProGrip XRT Rope Lock Tie-Down # 317-404400 is intended for use to secure cargo items. It is not really intended for use as a hoist to lift and hold heavy items overhead. Although four of these would have plenty of weight capacity it might be tough to operate all of them at once. A safer and better solution is a worm gear winch like # DL11011 which is designed for vertical lifting applications. With it you can use 25-foot cable # DL24100 for a 1400-lb lifting system that will hold the...

  • Hoist Options to Remove a Canopy Off of a Truck
I have a couple different options you can use to lift a canopy off of your truck. If you are removing the canopy in a garage or shop that would provide overhead supports, you can use an overhead winch like the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL11011 with the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24100. If you are needing a system that does not require supports overhead, then you could use the Brophy Heavy Duty Cable Camper Jacks # CX74.

  • Winch & Cable for Use to Raise and Lower Dust Collector
The Dutton Lainson worm gear hand winch # DL11004 is a good choice for your specific application but since you need a 25-foot strap or cable I suggest instead their similar 1500-lbs-rated worm gear winch # DL11011. This winch is rated with plenty of capacity for your needs and it also has the drill-drive option. It can be fitted with a 25-foot cable # DL24100.

  • Worm Gear Winch and Hoist Recommendations to Lift a 50 Pound Kayak
At 1,500 pounds capacity worm gear winch # DL10954 is the lowest capacity available. Speed is an issue with worn gear winches because they allow for the precise movement of a load. If you used # DL11011 with a series of pulleys you could mount the winch lower and operate it with a power drill to speed things up significantly. Regarding pulling 2 lines in at the same time the preferred method would be to use pulleys and one line feeding in to the winch though you might find success using...

  • Replacing A Shelby 5405 Winch On A 1988 Glastron Boat Trailer
I can definitely point you in the right direction of a new winch. Unfortunately Shelby is no longer in business, so a direct replacement is out of the question. That being said we have come across these Shelby 5405 winches before, and have found the Dutton-Lainson # DL15303 to be an extremely similar 1,400 lb winch. This is a single speed zinc plated winch designed for marine use. It can be used with a 1/4' wire rope like the # DL24100, or with a 2" wide trap like the # DL24260. Plus Dutton-Lainson...

  • Can Winch Strap Be Used On Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL11011
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch with Hex Drive Handle # DL11011 referenced in your question is designed specifically for use with a cable like # DL24100. A strap cannot be used with this particular model winch. For a similar style, worm gear hand winch that is designed to be used with a strap, I recommend the Dutton Lainson # DL11002. This has a slightly larger capacity of 2,000 pounds when compared to the model you were looking at and can be used with the winch strap # DL24242....

  • What is Maximum Length of Strap That Can Be Used On Fulton Single Speed Trailer Winch # FT6000301
The Fulton Single Speed Trailer Winch, part # F142002, can be used with 15 feet of 2 inch wide strap, like the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook, part # DL24239. This is the maximum length that can be used in this winch. It can also be used with a maximum 36 feet of 1/4 inch cable. The cable would only come in 25 foot lengths so you can use the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook, part # DL24100, which will give you 25 feet of cable. For a cable I would recommend you get a Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24100.

  • Split Reel Winch Solution for Bringing Two Heavy Things Closer Together
I spoke to my contact at Bulldog and he informed me that their jacks like the # BD150152 that you referenced are designed for pushing force down and are not designed for tension as he said, meaning they can't lift or pull two thing together. If you cannot, you will only be able to use the 20 foot # DL24242. • Recommended Brake Winch for Use on Ramped Utility Trailer for Loading 3000-lb Tractor
The best type of winch for your application is a brake winch, which automatically stops the drum's rotation when you stop cranking. This will be the safest type for your trailer and also will be easier to crank. A wheeled vehicle like a car or tractor is considered a rolling load in the winch world and this places less stress on the winch than a non-wheeled item. The degree of incline on your ramps has an effect on winch capacity. On level ground a winch can pull a rolling load 10 times...

  • Mounting a Winch in a Boat House to Pull a Boat Up a Launch Ramp
I am assuming the boat is on a trailer when stored in the boat house which will make things a lot easier. So basically what you could do is use a winch that can pull/lower the trailer and boat up and down the ramp. To load the boat on the trailer you would need to mount a winch to the trailer. For a winch to mount in the boat house you could just go with a hand winch such as # F143201, which has an automatic brake, with cable # DL24100. If the boat house has AC power then you could use...
