Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Wayne, Thanks for the info. that you left on the Harbor Freight Store Review for the Tag Along Trailer. Im soon to purchase one for myself. I was wondering if I could get better tires for it, and thanks to you I now know can, and know where to get the tires. It will take me a bit of time, but I will be purchasing me a set of tires and rims from etrailer.com I sure do like the way you have set up your little Tag Along Trailer, it looks great. Again, Thank you.

by:

Exact replacement for what I had.

by:

Got it fast was what I needed.

by:

Speedy service and correct wheel/tire. Grandson learned some, ya know grandpa stuff- jack safety, corrosion and antisieze, keep tools for the road. Spun a couple hundred miles next day.

by:

I really like the tires I bought from you better than I expected and they look nice on my boat trailer. it took care of my dry rotting tires that I had to mess with every time I had the trailer inspected. my rims were all rusted more than I wanted to be bothered with and they were reasonably priced for the quality which was very good.

by:

Perfect for my trailer! I hand walk a light boat through sand and this will make the job a whole lot easier.

by:

Fast, friendly service

by:

These tires and wheels look fantastic on my boat trailer. Price was right and delivery was on time. I am very happy with this company and I look forward for future purchases.

by:

While searching for this wheel/tire combination I experienced broad challenges from non-availability to "we're suddenly out of stock". Imagine my excitement when I discovered etrailer.com not only had them in stock, but free shipping as well. (I started getting happy.) After seeing the price and comparing it elsewhere, I thought I'd better order right now before someone realizes there's been a mistake in pricing. (More happiness.) When the wheel assemblies arrive in individual boxes the day they were promised, well, my day was made!
I'm making a small dump trailer for my ATV and these are exactly what I needed, and exactly what I wanted.
Thanks so very much! (Much happiness!)

by:

by:

Got here really quick!

by:

Fast ship fit perfectly

by:

Perfect for my pull behind motorcycle trailer. Much better than the harbor freight original tire/wheel. Service/Guidance from etrailer was great.

by:

Tire and wheel assemblies arrived within a few days of placing the order. I have purchased a number of different items from etrailer and have always been satisfied. I find the question and answer sections and videos to be very helpful. In this case I changed from a 5.80-8 tire to a 165/65-8 tire for my ancient snow mobile trailer. I was able to determine in advance the dimensions and ratings of the new tire and wheel assembly and confirm that it would fit.

Still a five star review for the tire and wheel assemblies and for strainer.

by:

Quality product on time as expected.

by:

Great tire for a small trailer, the powder coated rims are flawless and fit well. It's a shame no USA mfg. makes this size tire anymore but still a fine tire / wheel combo. Check the air psi. before putting into service as they come inflated to 80# or so.
As stated above, the customer service is top notch!

After a year and about 5000 miles I can say the tires are excellent. Very little wear on a 200 lb. motorcycle camping trailer. Wish the bike tires would wear like these. lol

My first purchase from etrailer and the service, product, and delivery were top notch. The website is very well done to allow tons of research and comparisons. Chat support was excellent for answers. Pricing was very competitive. Tires are high quality. Delivery was upgraded from 7 to 3-5 days and arrived in 3 days. Really good first experience. Thank you etrailer!

A year and 4500 miles later and my Kenda trailer tires still look like brand new. From rough off-road to high speed highway, hauling everything from furniture to appliances to stone to my lawn tractor, my Kenda tires have never missed a beat. Deff one of the better purchases I have made in my life. Thank you etrailer for the best product and best pricing.

  • What is the Offset for 8" Trailer Wheels with 4 on 4" Bolt Pattern
It all kind of depends on what exact tire/wheel combo you're looking at, but generally speaking trailer wheels have a zero offset so the middle of the tire is basically directly over where you mount it to the hub. If you can tell me what exact combos you're looking at I can answer your question a little more directly. The 2 combos I saw that match your descriptions are # AM3H290 and # AM3H200 which both have a zero offset.

A 16 x 6.50-8 tire is the equivalent of a 165/65-8 which fits on an 8 x 5-3/8 inch rim just like part # AM20011. So yes, that's exactly what you need. If you're looking for a tire we have part # AM1HP22. Or if you need both the wheel and tire we carry them as a combo using part # AM3H200.

  • Can I Replace A 5.70-8 Tire/Wheel With A 165/65-8 Tire/Wheel?
While it certainly is possible to replace a 5.70 x 8 tire/wheel with a 165/65-8 tire/wheel with the same 5 bolt pattern, there really is no advantage in doing so. The 165/65-8 tires are 1.5" smaller in diameter, and would have a lower max load rating than a 5.70 x 8. So unless your goal is to go with a smaller, lower rated tire, I suggest sticking with the 5.70 x 8 tires. If you are in need of new ones I recommend the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30140. This...

The best wider replacement option we have for a 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tire is a 165/65-8 trailer tire which is going to be pretty much the same overall diameter (16.1" vs. 16.5") so .4" larger but 2" wider (4.6" vs. 6.6"). If you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H200 but if you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H220.

  • Will an ST165/65-8 Trailer Tire Fit In Place of a 4.80-8 Trailer Tire
The measurement you are seeking is the backspacing. On just the wheel included with tire and wheel combo # AM3H200, would be approximately 3-1/4 inches measured from the mounting surface of the wheel to outside of the wheel (inboard or outboard since the wheel has a zero offset). The width of the tire though will be 6.6 inches. This is 2 inches wider than the 4.80-8 tires and wheels. The larger size will be 1 inch closer to the trailer frame. But it will only be 0.2 inches closer to the fender.
