Compatibility When Changing 8 Inch Wheels To 13 Inch Wheels
Question:
I am preparing to take my 18’ sailboat on a long trip, 950 miles one way. Currently the trailer has new 165/65-8 tires from etrailer with 4 on 4 rims. The bearings are L44649 both inside and outside. The GVWR of the trailer is 1,590 lbs with a carrying capacity of 1,260 lbs. The boat weights less than 700 lbs. There is plenty of room above the tire to increase the tire size and replace the fender. I am considering increasing the tire size to a convention size, or at least one that is not a special order such as what I currently have. 1. Please confirm the speed rating of your Kenda 165/65-8 AM3H200 is 65 mph? 2. Should I be concerned about these very small tire sizes on this road trip? 3. Do you offer a tire smaller than a 14” that has a higher speed rating than 65 mph? 4. How do I determine the width of the new tire and hub will work? Thanks

The Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H200 does have a speed rating of 65 mph maximum. This tire will function just fine on a long road trip like you mentioned as long as you run them at the recommended max psi when filling them cold.
We have the Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TTWTRTM1758013C which is rated at up to 81 mph. For wheels, I recommend the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 4 on 4 - White Powder Coat # AM20222DX or black mini mod # AM20242. I've attached all of your options.
When mounted this will give you a diameter of 24.02 inches and a width of 6.97 inches compared to your current tires overall diameter of 16-1/2 inches and 6.6 inch width. If you were to change them out, you would need to raise your fenders for the 7-1/2 inch diameter difference that would raise your trailer about 3-3/4 inches more off the ground.
