Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tire and wheel combo was exactly as described. Very fast shipping.

These tires replaced some old, rickety tires on split rims that were pretty dangerous. They have worked out so well, and look good on this old trailer. The price was right, and they were delivered pretty quickly.
Thanks so much

by:

I was amazed a the fast delivery from etrailer. The two tires arrived within 3 days and in great condition. I was expecting the tires to take much longer so I was pleasantly surprised. The tires and wheels look great. I will be using them only as spares for our trailers but they definitely look better than what's on there now. The price was very competitive with other places, if not better than most. The free delivery was great.

Thanks

by:

I received four wheels/tires two days after ordering and immediately mounted them on my old fertilizer spreader that I now use as a diesel fuel nurse trailer. Great service and fast delivery! I'm looking forward to pulling my trailer down the road at highway speeds; my old farm implement tires restricted me to 25mph!

by:

I have a pop-up camper that was converted to a utility trailer. The old rims were very rusty and I only found out when I went to install this new Kenda tire/rim combo that the old rims were bent/warped and difficult to remove from center bore. This new Kenda tire and rim combo makes my trailer look so much better! The rubber on these tires is very grippy, which I really like! My old, dry-rotted tires felt like plastic to the touch with no grip whatsoever. I used the etrailer website to learn how to properly measure the spacing between lugs to ensure I buy the right size. Shipping came super quick and all in one box. Tires were filled to the correct psi. I could not have been happier! I've since replaced the sides of the trailer with pressure treated wood, added 2 strips of 2"x 2"x6', 1/4" thick angle iron to the underside of the 2x8x8 plank flooring and used it to haul loam and crushed rock. All went super smooth and feels great to be able to use my utility trailer again!

by:

Great fit ,excellent paint on wheels ,tires were nice looking too...thanks

by:

I googled search for trainler spare for Coleman 17B RV trailer and etrailer come up with the exact tire / rim that i needed.
Easy order and correct specifications for my Coleman 17B trailer. I received in prompt time with no issues. I matched it with my trailer and it fits perfect.
Thanks,

by:

Used them on a boat trailer for the first time today and it didn’t last 10 miles and blew one of the tires. The rim was shot as soon as o noticed. Have had them in my trailer stored until now. Maybe had them 2 months. Would not recommend these tires if they are going to blow like this. Glad the pieces of tire also runnier my boats paint! Great time! Thanks for selling trash tire and rim packages! Out $XXX and stranded on the side of the road……..

  • Best ST235/80R16 Size Tire with White Wheel for Trailer
If you are looking for an ST235/80R16 tire and white wheel combo for your trailer the best option we have available is the Karrier # AM34903 if you have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern or # AM32764 if you have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. These are Load range E tires with an 81 mph speed rating. This particular combo also features a robust maximum load of 3,420 pounds at 80 psi and the tire's double steel belts and triple polyester cords allows for a long life because they will help...

  • Compatible 16 Inch Wheels and Tires to Replace 15 Inch Wheels on Horse Trailer
For your replacement tire combinations, I recommend the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" White Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range E # AM32764. These combinations are the correct bolt pattern but they are obviously slightly larger with a section width of 9.37 inches and an outer diameter of 31.61 inches. This is compared to your current 225/75/15 tires that have a width of 8.8 inches and an outer diameter of 28.3 inches. It will be comparable but just 0.57 inches wider...

  • Parts Need to Build Off Road Trailer
Square axles can be tough to determine capacity, however the set up you reference above should be more than adequate for a towing weight of 1750 pounds. The TruRyde Spindle for Square Axles # TRU47FR, which you referenced, is a square spindle designed for 2 inch square axles and has a weight capacity of 1750 lbs, so it will work great for you. This spindle, # TRU47FR, is indeed compatible with Trailer Hub Assembly # 84655UC1, which you referenced. The hub assembly comes with the bearings,...

  • Can Trailer Tire Size ST225/75-15 be Upgraded to ST235/80-16
The larger tire size 235/80-16 will be right at 2-1/2 inches taller in diameter than the current size you have of 225/75-15. If you have the needed clearance for that there's no reason you couldn't upgrade to the larger size. If you have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern you'd need the # TTWA16RGWSHD or if you have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern you'd want the part # AM32764.

Considering the size tires you are wanting to put on the trailer you would need to go with at least a 3,500 pound Timbren Axle-Less system such as # ASR35HDS02. The hub and drum assembly for this system is # 8-201-9UC3-EZ. For the brake assemblies use set # AKEBRK-7-SA. These are self-adjusting brakes, one left and one right. You will likely not be able to match up the bolt pattern between the trailer wheels and the Toyota wheels. Vehicle wheels also often have an offset whereas trailer...

  • Changing 235/85-R15 Tires to 235/85R-16 on 24ft Trailer
The ST235/85-R15 tire would be about 3-1/8 inches in diameter larger. This will move your tire just a bit more than 1-1/2 inches closer to the inside of your fender. As a general rule of thumb, you will want about 3 inches of clearance between the tire and the underside of the fender when the trailer is fully loaded. If you can maintain that clearance with the larger tires, stepping up to the larger size will work just fine for you.

The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - 4" Lift Spindle w/ Brake Flange - 5,200 lbs # TASR5200S03 will work well for your dump trailer. Since you are fabricating it, you will get more ground clearance if you put a cross brace directly where you install the assemblies so you don't need to use the 2 inch square bar in the integrated holes that is required when you don't have that cross brace in that location. That will give you just over 2-1/4 inches more ground clearance at your...

  • How to Raise a 5th Wheel Trailer to Ride Level with New Truck
Raising a trailer by increasing the tire and wheel size isn't the most effective method. Your current tires are about 28.3 inches in diameter. Larger ST235/85 R16 size tires have a diameter of about 31.7 inches. Almost 3-1/2 inches difference. However, they aren't going to raise your trailer anymore than maybe an 1-1/2 inches or so at the most. First of all only half of the diameter will make a difference on how far the center of the hub sits above the ground. Then you'll also likely...

I'd need bearing and seal numbers to confirm the replacement hub fit. If you already have the 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, then you can use the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" White Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - Load Range E # AM32764 which will give you a diameter of 31.61 inches. • Recommended Tires and Wheels to Replace 8.75 x 16.5 Trailer Tires
To replace the 8.75 x 16.5 tires on your trailer, I recommend going with an ST235/85R16 size, which will be the closest to what you have but on a 16 inch wheel. The lowest load rating we have available for this size is a Load Range E. If the hubs on your trailer have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern, I recommend the Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire with 16 Inch White Wheel # AM32739. • Recommendation for Eliminating Premature Tire Failures on a 28 foot Holiday Rambler Travel Trailer
I am curious about the type of tire the 225/75-R15 is on your 28 foot Holiday Rambler. If it is not an ST rated tire that is most likely the reason for the premature failure. The ST (Special Trailer) tires, like the Karrier ST235/85R16, item # AM32764, have a thicker side wall for handling the vertical load that is required on trailer axles and will last longer than a passenger rated tire like an LT in a trailer towing situation. Since the additional diameter is split on either side of the hub that means you would have 1.6 inches less fender clearance. The width difference would be one centimeter. For a tire to be rated for use on a trailer, the tire will need to have a ST (special trailer) prefix before the tire size or an LT prefix after the tire size.
