Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

The two 4.80-12 trailer tires came well packaged. They held some air but had to be inflated to 90 psi. The paint job was nice and I observed no chips. Each wheel had a black and red stripe around the outer ring. The tires were labeled LOAD STAR with a load rating of C and two ply sidewalls. I checked and Load Star tires are made by Kenda so that satisfied me. I am looking forward to many trouble free miles with these tires. Free and fast shipping was also appreciated.

Perfect replacement wheels and tires for my trailer.

by:

The wheel/tire assembly I purchased from etrailer arrived promptly and seems to be excellent quality. It replaced the wheel shown at the left in the picture, that failed on Interstate 95 north of Jacksonville, FL. Your wheel is so good we decided to buy another to avoid a similar experience with our other old wheel and tire in the center in the picture. The second wheel we purchased from you is obviously the one on the right. Thanks for the good products and service.

by:

Wheel and tire arrived within one week of order date. It is exactly as pictured on the web site. This is installed as the spare on a 4'X 6' open trailer with ramp and 2,000 lb capacity. I use the trailer to haul firewood, recycling branches and yard waste and scrap metal. From my initial inspection, the product appears to meet all the specs quoted and should work admirably for the intended use.

Tire and wheel are great. Tire wears well, holds air with no loss and has no cracking from sun exposure. I can recommend these tires and wheel sets.

by:

I bought these 12 inch tires and rims to replace the old 8 inch. They were exactly what I needed. They fit perfectly on the hubs and I am sure they will keep the bearings lasting for a long time. I am very pleased with this purchase. Thanks for a great product.

I could not be happier! Has made many short trips to the lake with no problems. In October pulled it 150 miles and again no problems. Thank-you for a great product.

by:

Tires and wheels arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I put them on a trailer I found on Craigslist This is a homemade boat I just got done with. I took it out on the highway and drove 75mph for about 5 miles. My first impression was great product. The trailer tracked as straight as an arrow. I'll follow up if I have any problems.

by:

tires and wheels came really fast. Was very pleased. Product looked great. Wish boat tires came with more tread but must be some reason.
Such a good feeling to have new load range c tires and wheels.. I should have done this two years earlier. It's never fun heading up fishing and worrying about having tire trouble. Great prices. Now I have a ugly great boat and good looking tires and wheels.

by:

My smallish tilt-bed utility trailer had old dry-rotted tires that would be flat after a week. etrailer fixed that with a new pair of shoes for the old girl... 4.80 - 12 tires on 4 1/2" 5 bolt rims that my 16 year old daughter installed by herself. Next morning we hauled 91 total 60 pound retaining wall blocks in 3 trips with no issues. The wheeled tires riding on new etrailer 5-leaf springs made the job a joy.

by:

Wow...ordered Wednesday morning, received Friday morning. Pleased, and how exciting!
Used info on the etrailer site to pre-build new fenders (not shown) to accommodate new tires & rims - fit is perfect! The 480x12 LRC tires & rims (Kenda #AM30660) replace the too small 480x400-8 LRB's (see pic) that always worried me on day-long trips. The new tires give me a critical bit more ground clearance and are Load C rated to 65mph. They even came with high pressure metal inflation valves, which were an unexpected bonus. Mounted on the smallish-size trailer I use to haul my 12' rowboat, 6HP motor & gear all around our Adirondack Park lakes and Lake Ontario, I know they are just the thing that was needed to overcome highway miles and backwoods rocky trails too. Thanks etrailer and George J for great service, prices and products!

by:

As advertised! Easy ordering, quick/free shipping!

by:

etrailer comes through again! I went to a local retailer for a trailer tire or two and he wanted to charge me about $70 just to put a new tire on an old rim. I went to etrailer.com and found a brand new tire And rim for $xx.xx and it was just what I was looking for. So I bought 2. I refer this company every chance I get to all my friends and family. The tires came two days early, and with free shipping ! I could not be happier. That’s how you do business. Thanks etrailer.com

by:

Just purchased a used landscape trailer that had wheels in poor condition.
I was able to get these new wheels and tires for about the same price it
would have cost me for just new wheels. Great price, fast and friendly
service and prompt delivery. Thank you for a pleasant experience.

by:

Great price, great value, no way you'll find these for this cost locally. Free shipping was nice bonus! Ordered with chrome lugs and chrome center caps. Had to pop the center covers off to make the caps fit. If you measure and the size is the same on the covers, order the next bigger size.

by:

Nice tires and rims. Just a little paint missing by one hole on each wheel.

I balanced both wheels and they didn't require much weight

by:

Exactly as described. None of the stores in my area had what I was looking for. Very professional. This website had a really good price for my wheels, I will be using this website again for purchases in the future.

Still strong as ever, we bought another trailer and if those tires go bad I’ll know where to order

by:

Looks good. Taking a 600 mile trip with the trailer. Will review again after the trip. Customer service has always been great.
The ratchet staps are substantial, and look like they are sure to keep the load in place.

by:

Good price and fast shipping.

by:

Quick and easy transaction / delivery. Quality product at a fair price. Web site as well as tracking application were flawless.

by:

Awesome experience! This was our second time ordering tires for our business trailer. Kate in customer service was fantastic in helping us duplicate our previous order, kept us informed as to shipping and they even arrived a day earlier than promised! We mounted the tires immediately and they are performing just as expected. Thank you so much Kate and the staff at etrailer. We will be back!

by:

I am impressed that etrailer makes the purchase of trailer equipment as easy as can be. I am a repeat customer. I recommend this company.

by:

Tires arrived on time with no obvious damage or problems. We have not used them yet, we will see how they hold up in our 100+ degree weather on the road. I’ll reevaluate once they’ve been tested

by:

Tires were good at low price trailer doesn’t get used much. It’s ready to go when I want it. It has about 1000 miles on the new/ 1 year old tires good ware I would buy again

by:

Great tires at a great price!

by:

I am very happy with tire & wheel from E Trailer..fair price, fast service and good quality.

Finding tires (and wheels) to fit my Carry-All utility trailer proved a challenge until I stumbled upon etrailer.com. They not only carried the correct tire/wheel size I needed, but also in the load range I desired (there were several local and internet-based sources for B rated, but finding C rated tire and wheel combinations was another matter).

I ordered three tire/wheel combinations from etrailer.com, all of which arrived in fine shape nearly a year ago and remain in great shape. Ironically, the price of each tire delivered to my door was within a few dollars (higher or lower) than the lower weight range tires I located in multiple sources elsewhere.

While I do not put many miles on my utility trailer, it is stored outside and the original set of wheels started to rust after several years in the Pacific Northwest. There was also some indication of weather checking in the original tires, prompting me to order replacements for the original two and added a spare in the event of unforeseen need. There is no sign of rust on the wheels nor weather checking on the tires; they still appear new.

When the time comes for another set of replacement tires and/or tire and wheel combinations for my utility trailer, I will definitely turn to etrailer.com for that purchase. Great product, customer service (delivery to door) and reasonable price for new tires and wheels.

James D.

After one year, still in the Pacific NW and housed outdoors, the wheels and tires continue to look great - with minimal wear and no sign of weather checking. Again, should I need to replace either one of them, I intend to revisit etrailer.com.

  • How to Determine if a Trailer Wheel is Hub-centeric or Lug-centric
The wheels are hub-centric. The wheel bolts instead of lug nuts is the only clue needed. A hub-centric wheel centers on the hub using the pilot hole and hub so it would be a snug fit. You could still use a lug-centric wheel as long as the pilot hole of the new wheel is exactly the same as the old wheels. To determine if any of the 4.80-12 tire and wheel combos we have will fit I will need to know the bolt pattern of the wheels and the diameter of the pilot hole. I have linked a help article...

  • Is the Weight Capacity for the Wheel and Tire AM30660 Rated Per Axle or Wheel/Tire
The 990 lbs at 90 psi rating that the wheel and tire part # AM30660 have is rated per wheel. So you would double this capacity to give you the overall axle capacity. So overall you would have a 1,980 lb capacity. I attached a review video for this wheel and tire for you to check out as well.

  • Can I Replace 155/80R13 Tires with 175/80 R13 Tires on a Boat Trailer
I did some calculations on the tire sizes and found that the difference between the 175/80R13 and the 155/80R13 is pretty small. The 175/80 is 24 inches inches tall whereas the 155/80 is 22.7 inches tall for a difference of 1.3 inches total, but that difference needs to be split since the overall diameter is split since the wheel rotates on the axle. So basically the wheel will take up an additional .65 inches of your fender well. The width difference is pretty small at .78 inches. So...

  • Aspect Ratio of the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch White Wheel # AM30620
The overall tire size of the 4.80-12 tire size is 20.5 inches, if you subtract the 12 inches of rim diameter you are left with 8-1/2 inches of sidewall total. Which would be 4-1/4 inches above the top and bottom of the rim. Check out the picture I attached that shows these dimensions. The style of this tire size is considered numeric. In Numeric style, when the first number ends in a zero, the aspect ratio is 92 percent. The section width of the tire is 4.9 also.

  • 12 Inch Trailer Wheels Rub Brake Drum and Cause the Tire to Wobble
On a 12 inch wheel you should have 7 inch tall brake drums (measured on the inside not the outside). If the drums are larger then that could be the reason you had problems and you would need to go to 13 inch wheels or hub/drum assemblies and brakes that match the 12 inch wheels. If you go to 13 inch wheels then you will also need to replace the tires. It is up to you which way you want to go. • Is Trailer Tire Capacity the Sum of All Tires
It sure does. If you add the capacity of your trailer tires you will get their total capacity, so in your case a pair of trailer tires with a 1,600 lb capacity will equal 3,200 lbs. Just be sure to inflate your tires to their maximum cold psi. Doing this will give you the best performance and enable their maximum capacity. It will also allow the tire to wear more slowly and give you optimum gas mileage.

  • What is Meant by Rated for Highway Speeds on the Kenda 4.80-12 Tire with 12 inch White Wheel
Unless otherwise noted trailer tires should never exceed 65 miles per hour. That is what is meant by highway speeds. Special trailer tires are usually rated to operate at a maximum speed of 65 mph. If you exceed 65 mph, heat could build up in the tire and cause it to break down and fail. If a tire is rated to run at a higher speed, this information should be listed on the trailer's sidewall. I attached an FAQ article on trailer tires for you to check out also.

  • Can Trailer Tires Be Aired Down When Trailer is Towed Unloaded
We typically recommend that trailer tires remain fully inflated to the maximum air pressure listed on the tire's sidewall. When the trailer is unloaded, if the fully inflated tires cause the trailer to bounce around in an obnoxious fashion it wold be okay to air them down a bit. Keep in mind though, if you forget to re-inflate them before using the trailer again, you'll be increasing the likelihood of having a blowout, which is why we tend to recommend leaving them fully inflated if at...

  • Do Most 4.80-12 Tires Use A Wheel With A 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern
In most cases 4.80-12 tires that are on wheels with 5 bolts they have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. If you measure from the center of one hole to the hole right next to it you should get 2-5/8" if your bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2". I have attached an article for your reference and the link to all of the 4.80-12 tires available on a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt wheel. • Replacement Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Size 4.80-12 with Pilot Diameter 2.5 inch
Thanks for the pictures of your wheels and tires! Based on that I can tell that your wheels are lug-centric which means they center on to the hub via the lug nuts and not the center hole of the wheel. So you just need to have a pilot diameter that will fit over the bore of your hub and you'd be set. The part # AM30660 that you referenced has a pilot diameter of 3.19 inches and will work great.

  • Are Pre-Mounted Trailer Wheels/Tires Dynamically Balanced
The trailer wheel/tire combination items we offer come from the distributor already joined together. These do not receive a full dynamic balancing the way new passenger tires do but this is not really needed for trailer tires. When mounted together, the distributor matches up the tire's low spot to the wheel's high spot. This avoids any serious out-of-balance condition and results in perfectly safe operation for trailering use. If you have access to a shop with the correct equipment you...

The importance of matching a wheel's pilot hole diameter to the part of the hub that fits through it depends on the type of wheel.
