Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Recently got me a used Jon Boat trailer and noticed the 8 inch tires were dry rotted. While looking for shackle bushings found these bigger 12 inch for cheaper than local prices. My friend said going to a bigger tire puts less stress on the bearings so I got me a couple. Fit was perfect and it actually set the trailer and boat higher so I can see it in the rearview mirror better. Havent had them on the road yet but expect they should be ok.

So Ive had these about a year and a half now and havent had any issues with them at all. Wear is great. I check the pressures and have yet to have to add any air. The reservoir I fish is about a hour each way and mostly interstate. I have been about 6 times this season as well as to my local river about 30 minutes numerous times. I have been very happy with these and highly recommend them.

My 10 year old utility trailer got its first flat last week. While changing the tire, I saw the tread was down a bit and the sidewall was starting to crack, so I thought it might be a good time to replace both tires. etrailer.com had these at a good price with free delivery. I ordered them Friday night, they shipped Sunday, and I received them on Wednesday. I couldn't be happier. I will continue to do business with etrailer.com.

Its a year later and the tires still look great. They only have a couple of hundred miles on them, but I expect they will last several years.

Just pulled my trailer from Michigan to Tennessee and back, through a lot of bad weather and mountain roads. I was very happy with these tires.

by:

Ordered 2 of these wheel/tire combos and they were at my door in 2 days. Installed first one on trailer and spun wheel/tire combo and found the wheel/tire was wobbling badly side to side. Took that wheel off and installed 2nd wheel combo on same hub and the wheel ran very true. Called etrailer and told them about it and after 3 emails and a few phone calls later they shipped another wheel that ran very true and looked good. When I got the replacement wheel I had to drop the bad wheel off at a ups store. I guess they welded the wheel wrong at the factory.

by:

Wheels came quickly, tires mounted and ready to go. They installed on my 4'x8' folding trailer without a hiccup. The wheels and tires worked as expected with no issues on their maiden 600 mile round trip.

Upgraded the stock tires on my Ironton trailer with these and they've run beautifully. Just had to release some PSI since I'm only pulling a kayak.

by:

I ordered these to replace tires on a motorcycle pull behind camper , just because they had some age on them and the wife and I are going to do some traveling this summer. These arrived quickly and were perfect replacements for what I had. I just mounted so haven't pulled yet but so far very happy with this purchase.

by:

Top notch. I build trailers occasionally, and etrailer is where I buy the tires and wheels. I know what I'm getting before they get here, and I've never been disappointed.

One year in, and my wheelstires still look and perform as new. No regrets whatsoever.

by:

I ordered a variety of products from etrailer.com to help build a custom rooftop tent trailer for a 8 week road trip. These included 2 different jacks to stabilize the trailer, wheel blocks, coupler and hitch locks, and a receiver/hitch for installation on my 2008 Honda Fit Sport. While researching and building my trailer, I was very pleased with the variety of products available on etrailer.com. It quickly became my go-to, one-stop site for all my trailer related parts. After 8 weeks on the road, all the components are still going strong and I am looking forward to many more years of adventures with my trailer! The specialty coupler and hitch locks were great for peace of mind on such a long trip, especially for the numerous occasions where my trailer sat unattended for a long duration while my girlfriend and I were out hiking, climbing, or backpacking

by:

These tires arrived two days after I ordered them. I checked the air pressure and it was right where it was supposed to be. These tires were ready to be put on the trailer. I took a 700 mile trip the next day all went great. great tires and great service.

The tires have been fine. Happy with my purchase.

by:

Great looking wheels for my kayak trailer. The trailer is only about 350# gross weight with two kayaks on board. These taller tires and wheels ride over bumps better than the 8" tires and wheels they are replacing, providing a much smoother ride. The added ground clearance is a plus as well, espcially when two=tracking back to remote launch sites. I have no doubt these will perform as well as the others I have purchased at etrailer in the past.

by:

The ad was right on point. The quality was excellent, the delivery was fast, no hassle turn key transaction. Free shipping was a nice plus. Price was as good or better than I would have found going to bricks and mortar dealers.

Product is excellent, no noticable wear or paint pitting

by:

Have used them for a year now. Right after we bought them we put them on a trailer for my small catamaran (1000lbs, boat and trailer) and took it to Florida from Ohio. Made the trip back and forth and several trips to Michigan throughout the summer without a problem!

by:

Not only was the product delivered promptly, but the price (even with shipping) was far better than I could get locally. I needed a spare tire and wheel for my trailer and got exactly what I had hoped for. I also found your website to be by far the most user friendly of the ones I visited for this. Thank you!

by:

I am very pleased with your excellent, fast service. All 3 trailer tires came in great shape. However, I think the shipping department should have stacked the tires on top of one another instead of end to end. The box was so long it was unmanageable, and it is a wonder that the box was not broken because two tires had slid side by side int box and it was bulging badly. It was clearly the wrong shaped box to ship the tires in.

by:

I needed good quality tires for my utility trailer. I needed tires that I could safely drive 60-65 miles per hour and not worry about overheating issues. I found those tires at etrailer. Customer service was knowledgeable, friendly and... in a word... excellent. I ordered on Monday and had them on Wednesday. Thank you, etrailer.

by:

trailer tires are great!!!i really like the tires.I went all over town looking for the 8 inch replacement tires, and was told that i wouldn't be able to get any in town.the;y said no one uses or sells that size anymore. I would need to buy a new axel.i was thrilled to find that you had what i needed but larger tires as well. i really like the new larger tires, they raise the trailer up off the road a little more which is better for me. thank you for the rapid delivery.when i need new tires i will come to you first. joe

by:

Bought this wheel and tire combo to replace one on my Jetski trailer and it works great and still holds air, thanks Etrailer.

by:

One tire was not mounted on the back side, about a half inch from the rim. This is obvious to a casual glance and should have not been shipped. Extremely poor product quality control! My attempt to make the tire mounted and round was unsuccessful due to the paint on the inside of the rim. The paint was too sticky to get the tire to pop out.

by:

ordered these tire/rim package to install on golf cart to raise it up higher that stock wheels----fit like a glove (almost custom) on my golf cart----a quicker way to raise cart up off the ground----a less costly way to do so---so far very pleased with quality of rim/ tire package and quick fit to my golf cart!!!!JLF

by:

HAVE NOT TAKEN THE TIRES ON A LONG TRIP BUT I AM SURE THEY WILL WORK WELL. TIRES ARE LOADSTAR ( I ORDERED 3). VALUE ON THESE TIRES IS GREAT AND THE REVIEWS ARE GREAT. SHIPPING WAS FAST AND I AM SURE THAT ETRAILER WOULD HELP ME OUT IF I WOULD HAVE ANY ISSUE WITH THE ORDER.

THANKS!!!!

by:

  • Can Trailer Tire Types By Mixed
It is not a good idea to mix types of trailer tires. Radial trailer tires usually run cooler than bias ply types. It is one thing to use a different tire type for the spare, where if it is used it will be only for a short distance/time. But for ongoing use we recommend staying with one tire type/size/load rating to ensure no one tire has more heat/weight stress than another. The two linked articles on special trailer tires may be of interest. I also linked our main page for trailer tires...

  • Does Size Of Pilot Hole Matter When Mounting The Tire
Since the tire/wheel is not being held onto the trailer by the hub you should have no problem with the Kenda tire/ wheel combo, part # AM30540. This is held in place with the 4 lugs and not the pilot hole. I have attached a product review video for this tire/wheel you can check out.

  • Recommended 4.80-12 Tires for a Fiber Stream Camper Trailer
The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30540 is my recommendation for a Fiber Stream Camper Trailer. This is a pre-mounted combo that comes ready to mount on the trailer. It comes with a bias ply tire which will be fine for this trailer and the only option for this size pre-mounted. It will also have plenty of capacity for the weight without going over and causing a rough ride. They are both (tire/wheel) backed by warranties as well.

  • When Should I Replace My Trailer Tires?
In general, we here at etrailer recommend changing trailer tires every 5-6 years. This includes tires like your Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range B # AM30540. This time period starts when the tires are actually used on your trailer between and if the tires were stored in a covered and controlled environment. However, if the tires are stored outdoors or in extreme weather conditions, this can deplete the lifespan of the tires faster. If there are...

  • Backspacing of Trailer Wheel and Tire Combo part # AM30540
The backspacing of the wheel that comes with the wheel and tire combo part # AM30540 that you referenced is 2-1/4 inches. This is calculated by taking the width of the wheel (4 inches) adding an additional inch for the lip on the wheel and then dividing by two. It's that easy to calculate because all trailer wheels like this one have an offset of zero.

  • Can 12 Inch Trailer Tires and Wheels be Used in Place of 8 Inch Tires and Wheels
A 12 inch tire and wheel is going to be over 4-1/2 inches taller than a 4.80-8 tire, half of which is applied to the top of the tire so you will need more than 2.3 inches between the tops of the existing tires and the fenders plus the distance needed for the suspension to travel so estimate 3-1/2 to 4 inches at most. • Can 8 Inch Trailer Tires be Replaced with 12 Inch Trailer Tires
Hey, thanks. You're not so bad yourself! Going to a larger tire size is possible but there are a few things to think about. Chief among these things is clearance. When going from an 8 inch tire to a 12 inch tire the diameter will increase by 4.4 inches. This means that if there is anything above the tire such as a fender the larger tire may not fit. Even if you have the clearance now you also have to account for the travel of the suspension. The width between the two sizes is not a concern...
