Video Transcript for Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Kit 420000 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Tekonsha Replacement Breakaway Switch. Now, a breakaway switch is designed to apply power to the trailer brakes, to stop the trailer should it become disconnected from the tow vehicle. If the trailer and vehicle disconnect, the vehicle pulls on this cable right here, which pulls the pin out of the switch. Once this happens, the trailer brakes are applied, which will bring the trailer to an eventual stop. The kit is going to come with the switch. It's going to come with the wiring. It's going to come with the pin.

It's already installed there, and it's going to come with the cable. It's already attached. The wire leads on this side, these are going to measure 48 inches, or 4 feet long. One wire gets connected to power, the other wire gets connected to the electric trailer brakes. On this side, we're going to have the cable.

This is a high-strength, steel cable that's covered with a protective coating to keep it from fraying and to keep it from scratching anything that it comes into contact with. Now, this unit is designed for 1 to 4 axle trailer brake systems. The cable length is going to measure 48 inches or 4 feet long. It's got the looped end on here, that would connect to the tow vehicle. When it comes to the dimensions of the switch, it's really nice, low-profile design. This is going to give us an overall length measurement, and I am including the bracket.

From edge to edge, we're looking at about 4 7/8 inch long, and that's measuring from the end of the bracket to the end of the pin. The switch body, that's going to give us a measurement of about 3 inches long. The overall width, you can see that the switch kind of hangs out over the side a little bit, so the overall width is right around 1 7/8 inch. Just that bracket width is going to be about 1 1/2 inch. Then, the height, or the thickness, it's only about 7/8 of an inch. It does have a mount hole right here.

That's going to give us a diameter of 1/4 of an inch, and hardware is not included to get that mounted to the trailer frame. That's going to do it for today's look at the Tekonsha Replacement Breakaway Switch.

Purchased this switch to replace old rusty unit on our cargo trailer. I checked function with volt meter prior to installation and it works as advertised. Quality seems to be very good. It's one of those things you have to have but hope it never gets any opportunities to perform! Good customer service and prompt delivery. No problems.

etrailer products and service are excellent! With their helpful videos and staff (plus a little help from Curt Manufacturing and our teardrop trailer manufacturer (CampInn)) I was able to install electric brakes on the trailer, and a controller in my vehicle by myself. I had never installed electric brakes before. Everything works perfectly!

by:

Good product, simple and works. Used this to replace the original brake switch due to it breaking. Wired to a small 12V breakaway battery then to Blue brake wire on the car trailer and all works as it should.

  • What Does a Trailer Breakaway Kit Do
Yes, what you described is the correct purpose of a trailer breakaway braking system. If for some reason the hitch and the safety chains were to fail and the trailer was to be completely unattached from the tow vehicle the breakaway kit would activate the trailer brakes so that it would stop as soon as possible. You would want to ensure that the length of the cable is enough so that under normal situations the pin would not get pulled while the trailer is still safely connected to the...

  • Breakaway Switch Diagram for Installation on a Dump Trailer with Trailer Mounted 12 volt Battery
I attached a diagram showing how a breakaway switch, like part # 420000, would be wired to a trailer mounted battery like the one on your Loudo dump trailer. With this type of setup you would not want to pull the breakaway switch with the trailer connected to the vehicle, to avoid a short circuit situation which could damage your brake controller. When testing the breakaway switch just be sure to disconnect the trailer connector from the truck, as it would be in a breakaway situation. The...

  • Are Trailer Brake Assembly Magnets Positive and Negative Wires
On trailer brake magnets like what's on the brake assembly # 23-106 the magnets are not polarity sensitive which means either wire can be used as the power or ground as long as the other is the opposite. This is why the wires of the assemblies are typically the same color like on the # 23-106 they are both white.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Electric Brakes and Breakaway Kit Installation
If you just put new brake assemblies on your dump trailer, the brake magnets have two wires and it doesn't matter which one gets the brake controller output voltage and which one is grounded to your trailer. You do want to make sure the one grounded to your trailer has a bare metal to metal connection free of rust, corrosion, or debris. If you have also added a breakaway system like the Replacement Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Switch # 420000 you asked from, then you will want to install...

  • Solution for Trailer Breakaway Pin that is Broke and Won't Stay Installed
The easiest solution for a breakaway pin that keeps popping out would be to replace the entire switch since they are all universal and the install is really easy. For that the # 420000 would be a great solution that will wire right in place of what you have.

I can help you wire the Replacement Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Switch # 420000 and the accompanying diagram shows exactly how it will be wired; I have also added a link to a video which shows it being installed. The white wire is a ground wire and the other two wires are interchangeable. One will be spliced from the from the switch and blue trailer brake wire that is running from the trailer connector to the trailer brakes. The other wire will be spliced to the blue brake wire coming...

  • Replacement Trailer Break-Away Switch for a Hopkins Engager Trailer Break-Away Kit
The Replacement Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Switch, item # 420000, is compatible with Tekonsha breakaway kits. The item # 20099 is a Hopkins breakaway kit, and it uses a Hopkins switch. The Tekonsha switch may work but for safety purposes we recommend replacing the switch with the original manufacturers switch. We offer two different Hopkins replacement switches with different lengths of lead wire. They are the Hopkins Replacement Break-Away Switch, 7 inich Lead Wires, item # HM20010, and...

  • Bedroom Circuit Breaker and Main Breaker Trip on a 1998 Four Winds Travel Trailer
It sounds like a possible short caused by a damaged or corroded wire. This would cause an overdraw and trip the circuit breakers. You would have to examine the wire in question and look for pinched areas or frayed and exposed copper strands. I do not have access to a wiring schematic for the trailer. Your best option for that would be the trailer manufacturer.

  • Troubleshooting Camper Breakaway Switch with Pin That Will Not Come Out
I am glad you were able to safety return home after your camper's brakes locked up. It sounds like your breakaway switch could be corroded internally. That would explain why the pin would not come out. It is possible that same corrosion caused a short inside the switch that in turn caused the breakaway battery to apply the trailer brakes. We can help you with a complete new breakaway kit like # 50-85-315 or the Tekonsha unit you referenced, part # 20020. We also offer breakaway switches...

  • Replacement Pin for an LBS48-16 ESCO Break Away Switch
While we do have numerous replacement break away system pins, all of which are similar, I cannot guarantee that any will fit your ESCO brand switch because they have not all been tested together. The difference in cost between a replacement pin and a new switch is minimal so I advise just replacing the switch with # HM20010.

  • Solution for Missing Trailer Breakaway Switch Plunger
I wasn't able to track down any information on the particular Bargman breakaway switch that you have so your best option is going to be to simply replace the switch assembly. Cables and pins/plungers are pretty specific to the models they are deigned to fit but the switches are typically universal across the board. This means you can simply replace your switch with the Tekonsha # 420000, which will include the cable, switch, and plunger/pin.

  • Solution for Lost Plunger for Esco Model 2010 Breakaway Switch
The easiest solution I can provide is to just replace the entire switch with the part # 420000 that you referenced. Trying to replace just the plunger can be challenging and since all of the switches are basically universal it's just easier to replace the whole thing.

  • Replacement Breakaway Switch For A Continental Enclosed Trailer
If you're talking about the breakaway switch for your trailer not allowing you to push the plunger back in then you can just cut it off and replace it. It's very common for them to corrode over time since they're sitting out in the elements and take a bit of abuse. You'll just need to pick up another switch like the Replacement Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Switch # 420000 and splice it in place of your current switch. One wire to the breakaway battery and the other to your actuator, doesn't...

  • Wiring an Up/Down Switch to Hydraulic Pump on a Dump Trailer
It sounds like you have a switch that has 3 positions, up, down, and off, similar to # PK34312. For each position that requires power there will be an input from the 12 volt power source and an output from the switch to the device it runs. You will run power in from the 12 volt source to the switch. There is likely a single input from the 12 volt power source. Then one output for up and one for down that will attach to the hydraulic pumps wiring accordingly. There is also likely a terminal...

  • Should a Rusted Trailer Breakaway Switch be Replaced
The pin that keeps the contacts inside a break away switch is plastic or otherwise a material that does not conduct electricity. As long as the contacts on the inside are not rusted the switch will continue to work. There is a way you can test it and I have linked an FAQ that shows how. Given that rust spreads it sounds like it would be a good idea to replace the switch. You can use any switch, like # 420000, that you have referenced. You will be looking for loose or broken wiring, corrosion, and loose connections. Clean off dirt and corrosion on the wiring/connectors. You should also know that the 12 volt circuit from...

  • Should Breakaway Switch Activate Brake Magnets When Pin Is Pulled
Yes, the brake magnets should engage when pulling a properly wired breakaway switch pin. If the brakes aren't locking up on your trailer when pulling the pin then I recommend making sure the power source (battery) for the switch is fully charged and that everything is properly connected. When testing the switch I don't recommend having the trailer hooked up to the tow vehicle just so you can avoid any potential damage to the brake controller or wiring on the vehicle. • Replacement Breakaway Switch, Cable and Pin For Tap By Hoppy Switch
I'm going to have to recommend replacing the entire breakaway switch as I cannot locate any replacement parts for your Tap by Hoppy switch. I recommend the Tekonsha Trailer Breakaway Switch # 420000 for a replacement. The wiring is long enough to run to the factory connectors so you do not have to worry about splicing wires where they are going to be exposed to the elements. It also connects with a single screw and uses a 49" long cable and pin.

This wire may be black or blue depending on the specific system. Attach one wire from the switch to the wire that goes to the trailer brakes. There should be another wire, usually...
