We are an OEM we sell the trailer to the customer and never hear back from them

I used this unit to pair with the Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, as it directly called for a 9mAh backup. This unit works as advertised, and the switch and wiring were easily identified and match the directions that come with the Dexter unit. The only reason I give this unit 4 stars instead of 5 is that it doesn't come with a battery charge indicator, which nearly every other 5mAh unit does. It would be really nice to be able to check the charge of the battery, without having to activate the emergency pull. Just a personal preference, but seems like a missing feature since all the 5mAh options have it.

The five stars are for etrailer service and shipping. My dexter k71-651 e/h controller and the dexter breakaway 34-285 were well packaged and great shipping lables. A phone call after my online order to confirm mailing address and follow-up e-mail my parcel was on its way. UPS tracking ,my SCC parcel pick-up in port huron michigan and my son crossing the borderI had my parts within 48hrs (duty paid). I would like to follow-up with photos of my installation. The dexter E/H controller and breakaway switch is replacing an vacumm / hydraulic disc brakes on in my yard NEW 1977 31ft airstream trailer, This trailer is replacing my 78 airstream that was gutted by fire with a auto parts store solar panel battery maintaining system. Thats another story. THANKS ALL

by:

Easy to install and works great.

by:

Products as described on line. Orders processed and shipped same day as my order. Trailer break away kit wiring instructions not clear, but that is a mfgr issue. etrailer had correct diagram on line with wires correctly identified by color.

by:

I have never been so happy with the Dexter Product that I have installed. I have told everyone. Thank you so much. Your concern for me as a customer is second to none. Thank you at Dexter for the great design and ease of installing. I own a 4 axel boat trailer with Dexter Elec over Hyd Disc on all 4 wheels. Thank you and hope we all have a safe summer.

by:

See what our Experts say about this Dexter Trailer Breakaway Kit

  • Recommended Hydraulic Actuator to work with Kodiak Disc Brake Kit for a 8,000 Pound Axle
The electric over hydraulic brake actuator I recommend is the Dexter # HBA16 (1,600 psi) as it is compatible with the Kodiak disc brake set # K2HR858DE. See the diagram I included of how the unit needs to be wired. This actuator requires a minimum 9 amp/hour breakaway kit like # 34-285. As a side note, you must use a brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes. Just in case you don't have one, I recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195 because it's very user friendly...

  • Can I Use the Dexter DX Brake Actuator To Convert Drum Brake to EOH On Triple Axle Trailer
The Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes part # K71-650 will work well to actuate your drum brakes on the triple axle trailer when you switch over to electric over hydraulic brakes. You will also need a brake line kit. The longest brake line kit we have available is HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Triple Axle - 25' Long, 3/16" Main Line part # HS496-253. I do not believe this line kit will be long enough but I do not know how far back your axle. If...

The # 34-285 Dexter Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger - Top Load will work with with your electric brakes. The installation requires the 12v power connection, the connection to the brake output wire, and the ground wire. I have attached a helpful installation video and article for your reference.

  • Troubleshooting a Trailer Brake Actuator
The Dexter E/H 1000 you referenced like # K71-650 could certainly be worn out. 10 years is a good lifespan. I would check the fluid levels and ensure there isn't any cut or frayed wires. Also, you will want to ensure the 12 volt battery the actuator is attached to should be fully charged. A depleted trailer battery could cause the unit to stop working. And lastly, there could be an internal short within the actuator. These reasons could be the cause of the intermittent working and not working. If...

  • Recommendation of Breakaway Set-Up For Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator # K71-651
The Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, part # K71-651, for the disc brakes will require a minimum 9 amp/hour breakaway kit like the Dexter Breakaway Kit, part # 34-285. This breakaway kit is designed to work with the Dexter electric over hydraulic brake actuator. If the breakaway set-up you have now is a 12 volt system with a minimum of 9 amp/hour battery, you should be fine to use the setup you have. You will also want to make sure the brake controller you will be using is...

  • Replacement Battery for Dexter Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger
For the Dexter Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger # 34-285 there is no specific replacement battery. This uses a 12-Volt lead-acid battery so for a replacement you just need to find the same kind of battery with dimensions that will allow it to fit inside of the case. The case dimensions are 6-5/16" long x 3-3/4" wide x 5-3/4" tall.

  • Are there Specific Mounting Instructions for Dexter Electric over Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator
According to Dexter, the Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, # K71-650, can be mounted at your discretion. But, there are a few things to consider. The shorter the wiring between the actuator and the power source, the smaller the voltage drop. It should be located so that the electrical wiring and brake lines can be neatly routed directly to the tow vehicle and trailer brakes. Special care should be taken to minimize the number of bends and fittings in the brake line circuits. An...

  • Recommended Trailer Break Away System for 9000 lb Enclosed Car Hauler
Since you're dealing with a fairly heavy trailer, I'd recommend going with the Bright Way # 3802311 break away system. The kit includes a 10Ah battery and a 2 amp charger. The battery box features a nice push-to-test feature that allows you to check on the status of your break away system with the push of a button. I contacted our representative at Dexter about the issue you were having with the Dexter Breakaway Kit # 34-285 on you 36 foot tandem axle gooseneck trailer. The Dexter representative informed me that the Breakaway Kit is not designed to lock up the brakes, but to stop the trailer. If, after rolling the trailer the brakes do not activate...

Your boat trailer has hydraulic surge brakes that uses a surge coupler to activate the trailer brakes. If you tow with any other trailers but the issue is only on the Belshe trailer then your issue will most likely be found on the trailer. The break away kit you have on your trailer should be fine if you have at least 9 amp/hour on your system, as this is what is required by the Dexter Brake Actuator, part # K71-651. It sounds as though you should be okay with two batteries hooked to your system now. No. I have never heard of needing 2 breakaway batteries for a single trailer. Because all the systems are rated for 12v, adding a second breakaway battery would only help the battery to hold the brakes longer because it doubles the capacity not the output voltage.
