Brake Lines and Fittings for electric Over Hydraulic Brakes on a 40 Foot Tandem Axle Trailer

Question:

I recently purchased a 40 foot dual tandem flatbed trailer with 2 10K axles. The axles have hydraulic brakes but all hardware actuator, brake lines, fittings has been stripped. When reinstalling the brake lines, do I come out of the actuator and go to a 4 way porportioning valve then to each drum? Is it that simple or are there special fittings/valves that I need in the line? Is there a kit? This is a large trailer. Will any of your 1000 psi actuators work on it?

Basically you will run the lines back and T-off where needed. A kit like # 9579-2 would work though you may need to add additional brake line (available and auto parts stores) to complete the installation. I have included a picture that shows a basic set up.

A system with 1,000 psi is fine for drum brake applications. Since some pressure is always present in the wheel cylinders in drum brakes, larger psi capacities are not needed. I have included a link to the drum brake electric over hydraulic actuators that we carry. The Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, # K71-650, should work out well. It will work if you happen to have a factory integrated brake controller in either a Ford or Dodge, but does not work with the GM/Chevy factory controllers.

If you have an aftermarket controller, make sure it can be used with electric over hydraulic systems. If you need one, I recommend the P2, # 90885 because it is easy to use and easy to set up.

The recommended breakaway kit for the Dexter actuator system is # 34-285.
