When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

I put this on an easy loader trailer that had an Atwood master cylinder which is now obsolete. Cutting the old actuator off was a real bitch. Installing the new Dexter actuator was very easy. I could bend the existing brake line 180 and hook it directly up without having to change the end. The bolts were easily available at the hardware store, I wish they would have came with it. The quality of the drop and go hitch is unbelievably easy to use.

The trailer is rarely used. but after a year, on braking, there was a banging noise from the hitch. It turns out this was from excessive travel on the brake shoes, because of improper adjustment after break-in. After proper brakeshoe adjustment the noise went away. All is working fine.

by:

This is a nice easy to use hitch. This is the 3rd one purchased for boat trailer hitch replacement. Really like the drop and go feature.

by:

Every time I use the brakes, the actuator slams loudly or "machine guns." I will not purchase a Dexter actuator again.

Honestly any drum brake actuator is not going to give a smooth braking experience. For smoother braking, changing over to a electric over hydraulic actuator and disc brakes would be the best option. It is going to be a more expensive option.

by:

It fit perfectly and was easy to install. Customer service was excellent.

by:

Great product. Kicking my butt for being cheap and not doing the disk conversion though. Works good. No issues after a year

by:

Good replacement for Atwood. Haven't used it yet but I can say I have gone through 3 Atwood's. I can see why they went out of business

by:

The Drop and Go Brake Actuator was easy to install on my boat trailer and works great. Easy to follow instructions regarding the bleeding of the brakes. Noticeable difference over the old actuator which was on its last legs. After a year of use I am totally satisfied with its operation.

by:

It's well made

by:

The actuator was just what I needed. Now just have to bleed the brakes. The lock will prevent anyone from driving off with my boat or trailer.

by:

Very nice hitch. Really like the drop and go part and works smoothly. Also like the large cap for checking brake fluid level and looks like it will last a long time (with proper use). Not like other hitch types that the cap and threads strip out due to corrosion.

by:

Quality product

Use the linked page to select the type of coupler you have then click on the wrench icon to choose parts. Then you'll see the repair kits we offer. • Can the Trailer Valet XL Be Used on a Trailer With a Surge Brake Actuator
You shouldn't have any problems with the Trailer Valet not staying vertical. If you have a surge brake actuator, like the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 that doesn't have a reverse lockout, then the only problem that you will have is when you try to back the trailer up the brakes will engage. If you disengage the brakes then the Trailer Valet will work as it is intended to. Just be sure to re-engage the brakes when you are done moving your trailer. You can use either...

  • Choosing Replacement Trailer Brakes, Hubs and Actuator for 1978 Calkins Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
You'll want to check a few details on the trailer so you can select compatible replacement parts. First, you want to confirm the axles' rated capacity; this should be noted on a sticker or plate on the axles themselves. Based on the info you provided it may be that you have two 3500-lb axles. Your brakes and hubs must match the axle rating. Next you'll want to take note of the size of the current brakes. You need to confirm the diameter and depth. You also want to note their mounting...

  • What Is The Difference Between A Disc Brake and Drum Brake Surge Brake Actuator?
The difference between the Demco # DM62VR for disc brakes and the Demco # DM72VR for drum brakes is the pressure each one operates at so that why they cannot be interchanged. Disc brakes require 1600 PSI where drums like what your trailer has require around 1000 PSI. For a surge brake actuator compatible with drum brakes and a reverse lockout solenoid I recommend going with the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-00 which can...

  • Recommended Replacement Surge Brake Actuator For An Atwood 85778
Since the Atwood actuator line was discontinued, the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator # T43397007K has been one of the most popular replacements for it. This is rated up to 7,000 pounds and can accept both 1-7/8" and 2" balls, so it is a very good option. However, we do have an alternate that you may want to take a look at. The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 will be rated a little higher at 7,500 pounds, but will only accept the 2" ball. Both of these are American...

  • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator For 2006 Ranger Trail Trailer
I would be happy to make a recommendation for a replacement brake actuator for your 2006 Ranger Trailer Trailer, but I will need to know if your trailer has hydraulic disc or drum brakes. If your trailer has hydraulic disc brakes the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Disc Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-20 is a great choice that has is zinc plated for superior corrosion resistance, and will bolt on to trailer tongues that are 3" wide. • 2005 Ranger Trail Boat Trailer Replacement Hydraulic Brake Coupler
Was there any manufacturer info on the existing coupler? Any part numbers? Unfortunately, there isn't an existing database that allows me to look up which hydraulic coupler was originally used on your 2005 Ranger Trail boat trailer. This being said, the Dexter Axle DX7.5 Drop-N-Go actuator would work well if you have a 3 inch wide pole tongue and need a coupler compatible with a 2 inch ball. For disc brakes, use the # 099-175-20, or # 099-175-00 for drum brakes.

  • Are There One-Time Use Electric Breakaway Kits for Trailers
Aside from surge brake couplers like part # 099-175-00 (like you mentioned) we have never heard of a one-time use breakaway system. The only thing I can think of as to why you wouldn't want to test an electric breakaway kit, like the Hopkins # 20099, is because from my understanding in most states the battery must be able to lock the trailer brakes up for at least 15 minutes to be considered roadworthy. If you were to drain the battery completely by making sure they locked up for 15 minutes...

  • How to Determine if my Trailer Has Electric or Hydraulic Brakes
Since you have an older trailer, the brakes could have possibly been switched from electric to hydraulic or the other way around. Even on newer campers, unless it is just purchased from the manufacturer, it would be just a guessing game for someone who cannot physically inspect it. The easiest way to determine whether your 1976 Wilderness trailer has electric or hydraulic brakes is by checking to see if it has an actuator or not. Because electric brake assemblies like the etrailer.com self adjusting brake assembly part # AKEBRK-7L-SA are not typically used for boat trailers, the assemblies are not specially coated for saltwater corrosion resistance. • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator To Replace Discontinued Atwood 61101 On 2004 EZ Loader Boat Trailer
I have a complete replacement surge brake actuator option for you, but unfortunately since Atwood has been out of business for quite some time there is not a replacement master cylinder available for the Atwood 61101 actuator on your 2004 EZ Loader Boat Trailer. Instead I recommend replacing it with the Dexter DX7.5 # 099-175-20 if your trailer has Disc brakes, or the # 099-175-00 if your trailer has Drum brakes. • Dico Surge Brake Actuator that Looks like Model 60 Replacement
The best solution we have is going to be a new surge coupler like the # 099-175-00. Some of the Dico and Titan parts are interchangeable in recent years but since your trailer is almost 30 years old it's tough to say what all would still work. Plus you have to consider it's hard to know what all would need to be replaced so replacing the entire coupler gives you all new parts and frees you from having to worry about the next old part on the coupler that may wear out.
