What Wire Gauge Should be Used for Electric Trailer Brakes?

Question:

Im looking to run wires for a trailer brake on a 2014 f150 crew cab not tow package ready. Do I need 10 gauge wire, or is 12 gauge sufficient for this application? I have a 7 thousand pound carhauler that I will be loading with a RZR and 1-2 four wheelers, brakes on 1 axle. Thanks

Expert Reply:

It would be fine to use either 12 gauge wire # 12-2-1 or 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1. However, we generally recommend using the 10 gauge wire for running the 12V power to your electric brake to avoid the wire potentially overheating.
