Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring - Trailer Connectors - HM48192 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number HM48192. This is the Hopkins Endurance Quick Fix Replacement Four-Way Flat Trailer Connector with LED test lights. The plug is designed to replace a damaged four-way flat trailer end connector in just a few quick, easy steps. All you have to do is cut off the broken plug, insert the existing wires into the new plug. In order to do that, you just need to undo the two screws here that's going to allow the plate to separate. You can bring your wires through the slots in the back, make the connections and then just press the cover on the new plug closed, and that's going to secure the wires in place, so no stripping of the wires is necessary. It's a very easy system to use.

Once you have the cover pressed down over the wires, you can then resecure by tightening up the screws. Here on top it's going to feature LED test lights that are going to confirm that electrical connections have been successfully made. It's got an integrated dust cover that's going to protect the terminals from the elements. Simply just place that over the connection points. This system here is the wire retention plate. That is going to insure a nice, secure installation.

It's also got some nice grip on it. That way you can get a secure hold and it makes it very simple to plug in and unplug the connector from the connection points. This is for use with 18-gauge wires. It can also work with 16-gauge wires. It's going to come with a terminal grease packet as well as the four-way flat trailer connector. That's going to do it for our review of part number HM48192. This is the Hopkins Endurance Quick Fix Replacement Four-Way Flat Trailer Connector with the LED test lights.

Nice product & good value imo--it's very beefy and appears to be heavy duty---I know these are supposed to be temporary---that said this one replaced a Reese connector connector exact same style w/LEDs that was almost 17 years old before it failed--hopefully this lasts even close to that amount of time--I don't use this trailer daily usually not even weekly---so maybe with commercial trailer use this connector isn't for you.....
It's my considered opinion that many of the fails are the result of a lousy install or someone disconnecting by pulling on the harness INSTEAD of grabbing the connector either way this gets an A+ from me

by:

This is perfect. I needed an easy way to change the connector on the trailer I'm working on. It was an old pop up camper with an 8 pin connector mounted on the frame. but I only needed a 4 after rewiring it. So, out with the old and in with the new! Plus it's really easy to connect all the wires. Picture is not of the new connector but of the whole project I'm working on. I've since mounted all the running lights, tail lights etc.

These male and female 4 wire pigtails are advertised as "quick fix" connectors. I use these connectors so that I can make my own pigtails. Sure, you can buy a pre-wired pigtail and add on to it by splicing the wire with butt connectors, however by using the quick fix connectors, you eliminate the need for the butt connectors and an additional possibility of a place to have a problem such as corrosion. The connectors are easy to use, reliable and you do not have to use the conventional 4 flat wire. I have used these connectors with individual wires as well as a round, 4 conductor wire. In addition, these connectors are a newer version with screws to connect the plug together rather than a snap connector. This version also makes them easier to take apart in case of a malfunction.

Outstanding product and highly recommend them.

Excellent, best for fast repair

by:

Quick install, quality product at a fair price

At almost the one year mark of installation, I hooked up the trailer for a snowmobile trip and the wires pulled out of the plug. Dont know if the internal prongs separated that hold the wires in??? I just spliced into an old molded plug with wires to get going. I do like the plug with the LEDs that tell you a circuit is present so it is a good tester to keep around for that I guess.

This is a handy item to keep in your toolbox if something should occur while out on the road. Then, once youre back home you can do a permanent fix. This item is really intended as a quick fix in an emergency situation, and not as a permanent repair.

by:

Seems well made but poor design. In order to view the LCDs the recepticle ground wire has to be on the right. 2nd issue is that there is no way to clamp the insulated wire bundle to the new plug (as is typical with replacement 3 pronged 110v plugs) and that pulling on the wires when unpluging the trailer (instead of pulling the plug itself which is the right way, but which doesn’t always happen!) directly stresses the connection and individual wires, leading to early problems. I would not buy again.

Due to the way that the connector makes contact with the wiring by piercing the wire insulation, this in an item that I would consider best for a temporary fix in an emergency situation. It would not be my recommendation for a permanent repair.

by:

Installed this on my boat trailer to replace (although it was new) plug end that came with the new wiring harness I had to install. I really prefer to see the blinking LED lights when I am getting my boat and trailer ready to roll, along with eyes-on inspection of the lights themselves. Especially when your trailering up after dark (as always seems to be the case). Also the integral attached plug cover is essential in my opinion, keeps the plug prongs dry and keeps from losing it in the dark.

by:

My Toyota 4-Runner has the trailer wiring hookup on the left side of the truck instead of the center near the trailer hitch so I have to use an extension wire. I replaced the end that the trailer plugs into with a matching end of this product so that the length allows me to tywrap the new end by the trailer hitch area. I then replaced the trailer connector with the same style of this product. It’s now a breeze to test the trailer lights and determine if and malfunctions are on the truck or trailer wiring.

by:

The installable male 4-wire male plug is a GREAT product. The LED "pilot" lights are especially helpful - - to "know" the connections are solid and working. We used it to replace the typically molded-in 4-wire flat male connector on our aluminum utility trailer (that we use a-lot). The install was straightforward and easy. The "cap" to cover the connectors is SUPER. I highly recommend this male flat wire connector - - as a replacement to a damaged molded-in connector OR merely as an "upgraded" connector. It was also VERY easily being an etrailer.com customer -- had what I needed at cost-effective price - - a DOUBLE WIN. (DH Akron, OH)

by:

These connector will work great

by:

Seems to be well constructed, comes with dielectric goup, screws together; all good.
Unfortunately, each terminal in the connector and the entrance and exit mouldings only have room for one each of the relevant wires (ground, marker lights, left turn, right turn). If your trailer is well made and has robust wiring, there will be three sets of wires -- one for the tail lights (2 wires), a set of three wires for the left turn signal, and another set of three for the right turn signal. That makes for three ground wires and three marker light wires. That's done so there are no splices in the wiring in the trailer itself. Because there isn't enough space in the plug for three wires on the ground and marker connections, you have to make a splice outside of the plug and feed a single wire into the plug.

by:

This is my only wire connector that I use for trailer connector. Clean, easy to wire & can be rewired if necessary. A great product.

Still working great, and the led lights let you know when there is a problem, no more guessing.

by:

I have used this type of connector for the last year to fix trailer plugs. This plug is 10 times better then any of the others I have used. Better quality, Easier to wire. Comes with a way to bolt on to trailer or to tow vehicle, LED lights to let you know what is working for trouble shooting. Very solid product. Will never use any others again.

by:

Used the adapter to hook our 7 pin trailer to my wife’s 4 pin, worked great, she no longer has the vehicle and we have re-wired the trailer to 4 pin for a permanent fix. I thought this adapter was great for our purpose at the time

by:

I have purchased from this company many times and have been satisfied with the quality of it all. Service and delivery has been excellent. Some of these are spares for future mishaps and the bulk are going to changing Ranch trailer wiring to match my new truck. I have used a metal round four pin for 30 years and now most all is seven flat and four flat. I am making the change. Thank you trailer for caring quality and large assortment of plugs. Thomas

by:

A little bulky compared to the pigtail style connectors, but it does the job and it's handy to have the indicator lights for checking/troubleshooting wiring problems. I found it necessary to hold the nuts when tightening the screws to keep them from turning in the plastic. Also, not too much torque! Otherwise the connector starts to "squish" out on the sides.

by:

I have a small cargo trailer business. I only use this model of 4-way. It's bulletproof. I change the screws from steel to stainless (8-32) and add a pair to the top set of holes with a couple of acorn nuts. It's solid and well made. As far as e-trailer is concerned the price is right and they shipped it quickly and for a reasonable rate. I will order a few more to keep on the shelf for repairs.

by:

As described. Had a bit of a challenge as wires are installed into prongs which are intended to pierce wiring insulation. Wires must be pressed very firmly down into wiring prongs in plug. One wire did not make connect as securely as other three and therefore was intermittent in carrying current. I continued to press wire into position and believe that I finally made good connection. Insulation must be pierced so that prongs contact bare wire. Easy install with the exception of above.

Service form etrailer was excellent.

by:

This came with good directions and was easy to use, but I think the wires I was using were too old and stiff and it wouldn't connect for me. I ended up plugging this in to a short wiring adapter that had a trailer and and a vehicle end. I still have this and hope to find a use for it in the future.

by:

Good product , fast delivery . Only complaint is that there is one slot inside of the unit to accommodate each color of wire ; I had two brown wires ( one from each side of the trailer ) so I had to splice the m together and force them into the one small slot . A little cumbersome ,, but it worked . LED lights worked and are cool .

by:

Well built. I've got it in my tool kit for those unexpected roadside repairs because it doesn't need any need to strip wire or crimp connectors to spice onto your existing wiring.

It could also be attached to your trailer as a "permanent" connection point if you use a separate wire from your tow vehicle to the trailer. I has a built in dust cap and test LEDs. Very well made

by:

Replaced the cheaper flat 4 connectors, I put 1 on these on my
Lexus Suv and 1 on the Trailer I also, soldered the connections on the trailer LED flat 4 plug ( Very Carefully ) I did not use the die/elec grease
provided instead, I use ( NO-OX-ID A Special ) there in nothing better
for a water proof positive electrical connection ****
Fast shipping and GREAT pricing from this seller !!!

by:

I purchased this connector to replace the one I currently had that I had bought from a retail store because the LED indicator for the right turn signal no longer lit up. This replacement plug is much more robust than the one it's replacing. It even came with a packet of di-electric grease which will shield the connections from moisture and salt. The original plug didn't come with the grease and the connections were corroded. I am very happy with this item, and will continue to purchase from e-trailer.

by:

I only gave it 4 stars, because I had to make an adjustment to my wires.
The V clip would not pierce the insulation. I had to strip the wire and double it over to make contact.
My wiring harness is normal size. It would be helpful to know what size wire this plug is best suited for.
