Recommended Replacement Heavy Duty Trailer Wiring Harness
Question:
I am in need to a new wires for my trailer. I replaced a few years ago, but the yellow wire has basically disintegrated inside the insulation. I have not seen this before. Trailer does sit outside, but wire is run in plastic conduit from hitch to lights. I was shocked. What is your suggestion for a 4 plug harness, as i would like it to have a ground if possible as i prefer to run ground to each light as well to eliminate problems. Is 14g the standard? Or should i increase in size? I replaced with LED lights, but now if my wire is going bad so quickly, i am frustrated. Thanks for your help.

Running a separate ground for each light is definitely the best way to wire an LED trailer, so you are definitely doing that properly.
The standard wiring is actually a little smaller than 14 gauge, however, and the Optronics # A35W42B will follow this standard. The standard ground on a 4 Flat plug is 16 gauge and the other 3 will be 18 gauge. So if you wanted to go a bit more heavy duty, you will need to another way.
The Hopkins Endurance Quick-Fix # HM48192 will be a good option for the actual plug, and can then be paired with the Deka Jacketed 4-Wire # DW04923-1 will all be 14 gauge wire with an outer jacket. This should keep the wires from crumbling again.
