Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring - Trailer Connectors - HMC20031 Review

Today we're going to review part number HMC20031. This is the Hopkins Quick Fix 4-way flat trailer end connector. Now this is used if you happen to have a damaged 4-wire flat on your trailer and you need to replace it, or if you just have some pigtail wires and you want to put a 4-way plug on the end, you can use this part for that. Basically what you would end up doing there when you just put your wires right in here. Lay the bare part of the wire right into the connector, and then take your cover plate, once all the wires are in. Just go ahead and put this in, and then push it all the way down and it will actually lock into place. It protects your connections, so there's no external splices. Basically just to give you an idea, I have a sample here.

You can see: here's your normal four wires you'll see on a 4-way flat. You've got your white, brown, yellow, and green. Basically on your trailer, if you have a damaged connector, you cut it off. You have these wires, or if you just have the wires and you need a 4-way, basically what you would do .. and what also helps you out is on this 4-way, it's actually marked.

It says "RT" for right turn. "LT" for left turn. "TM" for the tail lights, and then "GD" for ground. Basically it shows you where the wires. Now normally on a 4-way, you have this normal color combination here, but what I would recommend to do is actually probably put power to each circuit to make sure and verify. Just don't always go by the colors.

It's always good to test the circuit to make sure it lights up the correct circuit you're going to install in here. Basically all you'd end up doing is taking you're . Like, in this case, it says right turn . Your white is the ground. Brown is the tail lights. Your yellow is your left brake and turn signal.

And your green is your right turn and brake signal. You'll see the end one says right turn, so we take our right turn, which is the green. You just lay the wire in there and then you take the exposed portion and you actually push it down and it will actually clip in there and hold into place really tight. Then once you get all four put in there, again, you just put this on there, push it into place and you'll be ready to go. But that should do it for the review on part number HMC20031. This is the Hopkins Quick Fix 4-way flat trailer end connector. .

Good product. Great shipping

by:

Well I received only the larger of the two parts and it was loose in the envelope with absolutely no packaging making this product worthless. I spoke with etrailer customer service and they are sending out a replacement product.

by:

I like the idea but the connection is not always secure and needs to be adjusted.

by:

These connector will work great

by:

Product was exactly what was needed. Much better than dealing with multiple wire nuts. If you can replace an extension cord plug, why not a trailer plug? Why are these things not in the big box stores? Was surprised the product was as hard to find as it was (google searching).

by:

This is the first time I've used this particular product manufacturer. In the past I used a similar trailer end from Reese. Installation was easy other than ensuring that all four wires were properly aligned with the forked terminals. I used a hammer to lightly tap the cover in place, and ensured the "clips" on the ends of the cover were securely in place. Time will tell if the "clips" will stay secured. Reese uses two small screws to keep the cover in place. Thanks eTrailer!

by:

Product was delivered on a timely basis and was exactly what I was l;looking for. Original wiring keep breaking at entry point into plug. Now I if that happens I can make a "quick fix" repair. Bought 3, an extra one for myself and one for my son.

by:

Only one of four wires penetrated the copper wiring thru the sleeve when the cover was installed. Sure, you can remove the cover & wiring and cut a slit where the wires were intended to pierce, but, that defeats the whole purpose of just slipping the wire into each corresponding section and having the cover push down the wires to get pierced.

by:

This product was super-helpful and reliable for connecting our microlite trailer with a campsite's electrical hookup. :)

by:

Easy to install, have some channel lock plaids to lock top piece in.

by:

Good concept; it just didn't work. I gave up on crimp connectors and these press in connectors and learned how to soldier.

by:

This product perfectly suited my needs. Also it was a very easy to connect the wires from an existing harness to this connector. I had it assembled in less than 5 minutes

by:

Quick, easy, affordable. Perfect replac ement.

Trouble free solution.

by:

The connector worked as hoped. I usually stay away from the quick-connect type wire connectors but this one worked first time and was extremely easy to install. Good quality connector.

by:

I love these things, Im a contractor and a sports men. I am changing all my trailers to these and keeping some around for the ease of quick repair

by:

The trailer wire end worked better than I hoped it would. The folks at e-trailor are greatly order was shipped within an hour after I ordered it and got here reasonably fast!

by:

The service rep was terrific. She analyzed the alternatives and made helpful add-on recommendations without any pushy "up selling."

etrailer comes through once again!

by:

connector would not allow a 5 strand hook up.(wishbone set-up). Broke fairly easily..

by:

The only problem was the body of the unit was extremely flexible and flimsy. Although it worked for it's designed purpose, it didn't seem at all durable and at best, seemed to be a temporary measure.

by:

worked great. easy installation

by:

Great product. Fast delivery from trailer as always thanks

by:

Got repair plug inpressed with quality. Will probely order more parts.

by:

It works perfectly. Thanks etrailer.

A good value

  • How Do I Convert My 5 Wire Flat to a 4 Wire Flat
It sounds like you have the normal set-up: green wire for right turn and brake, yellow wire for left turn and brake, white wire for ground, brown with green stripe wire for right side running lights and brown with yellow stripe for left side running lights. Using a connector like the Quick Fix (TM) 4 Pole Flat Trailer End # HMC20031, you can connect color for color the green, white, and yellow wires. As for the brown with green stripe and the brown with yellow stripe, these will both need...

It sounds like you are looking for the wiring harness portion of the Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow 4-Way Flat to 7-Way RV Trailer Adapter part # HM47180. If that is the case then this part is not available separately but you can obtain something similar with the Pollak Wiring Harness Extension part # PK11-934 and the Quick Fix 4 Pole Flat Trailer End part # HMC20031. If you need butt connectors to finish up your connections you can use part # DW05745-5.

  • After Replacing Trailer Side 4-Way Wishbone Harness with Non-Wishbone, Running Lights Dont Work
The issue is likely in how the 2 brown wires are connected and then connected to the single brown from the new 4-Way. You basically need to make the 2 running light wires into one and then butt connect to the single brown. You could use the Quick Fix, # HMC20031, twist the two running light wires together and then put the newly combined wire in place. Or you could go ahead and swap the 4-Way for a wishbone, # A20WB. There also could have been a short that fried the lights when the original...

  • Availability of Adapter to Go from 4-Pole Round on Trailer to 4-Pole Flat on Vehicle
I do have a couple options for you, but there isn't an adapter to go from a male (trailer end) 4-pole round to a female (vehicle) 4-pole flat or even a 7-way. So, you could either make your own adapter using part # PK11410 and # HM38138, if you do not want to modify the harness on your magnetic trailer lights, or you could simply replace the 4-pin round connector on them with part # HMC20031, which is going to be the most cost effective.

When a 4-pole (4-pin) flat trailer connector actually has 5 wires this simply means it is a 'wishbone' style connector with dual running light wires. These dual wires just make it easier to connect to the running lights on both sides of the trailer. Examples of such items are # A35W42B, # A20WB and # A10-4225VP. In regards to the trailer lighting issue, you likely have some sort of short on the green wire or a loose connection.

The white wire on the back of the GloLight LED Trailer Tail Light part # STL178RB is for the ground. If you were wiring it to a trailer connector like part # HMC20031 then you would just need to make sure that it is attached to the ground terminal and no additional grounds would be needed. Standard trailer wiring usually features a wire for right turn/stop, a wire for left turn/stop, a wire for the running lights, and a wire for ground. Your trailer likely has separate wires for each function along with a couple of ground wires. In order to replace your broken 4-Way with a new one like the Hopkins # HMC20031 you will want to first test the wires on the trailer by applying 12V power to them (or trace them to where they lead to) to determine their function.
