Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I had a tough time finding the right hub as mine happened to be an odd ball nobody had or could get! But thankfully I called the etrailer support and they where able to reassure me that this was a match! I wish it came with a new washer and castle nut but I am still grateful for the help and peace of mind knowing I’m not going to be dead in the water ever again and that I have what I would consider a good team behind my business when working with e trailer! I have bought many things from this site and I can tell you they are the best!

Best A.

@BestA You're very welcome, glad we could help!

About a year ago I had purchased a Bobcat and didn't put much thought into the trailer that I already had to haul it with. Thanks to etrailer I was able to do all the upgrades needed to haul heavy loads safely. I purchased a set of four drums, a set of four new brakes, a set of four new 6000 pound springs and all new U-bolts. Everything I just listed was changed out in one day with no problems at all. I strongly recommend that you use the formula for lug spacing if you're not sure what you have. Thank you Laser at etrailer for the help on my oops. I've recommend etrailer to several people who have needed replacement parts and have had the same luck I did, Awesome service and a short shipping wait time.

etrailer customer service for returns and their products as a whole are third rate at best. Every product arrives damaged from terrible packaging and handling by etrailer. Customer service sometimes responds and their return policy is garbage at best. buy elsewhere

by:

My project was to change my hydrolic brakes to electric, my first parts delivery was wrong but I didnt worry because e-trailer really backs up there service. After explaining my problem they went right to work to correct things and it didn't cost me any extra. The job is complete now and the brakes work great! Thank you E- Trailer.

by:

After twenty some years, I finally installed brakes on my utility trailer. I've owned the trailer since new. I used it for years to haul my stock car, always wishing I had brakes on the trailer, but never got around to installing them. The Drums I ordered were the 845476UC3 units. They are very well built, made in the USA . They fit the brake assemblies perfectly. Just from their weight, construction and with the protective coating, they should last a long time.

by:

I worked with Wayne H. to get the correct drums shipped to replace the incorrect ones that I ordered (my mistake). They were available on Sunday and was very helpful to troubleshoot the issue while I was in the shop with the trailer. The replacement parts were provided quickly and I sent back the old ones in the same packaging. Quick and easy. Thanks!!

by:

wont be able to tell until I carry a load and it doesn't break. (looks good) One thing I have found on outher hubs and these hubs. the hub cap is flimsy and very frustrating and ends up damaged (put the dirty old ones back on) Susanne thank you and the outher sales people for helping me get the correct drums.

by:

Easy installation and the brakes work great! The etrailer installation video helped alot.

by:

Very pleased with the knowledge, assistance and guidance Kevin provided me with my purchase. Items shipped the same day and arrived in 6 days. Trailer break items were all the proper size and fitted perfectly. Job well done, thanks a million.

by:

The hub that showed up was 4 1/2" but the box was marked 4 3/4".

  • Recommendation of Trailer Hub and Drums and Axles
The trailer hub and drum assembly # 845476UC3 includes bearings and races from Redline. They are made in China. I would assume you have 5 on 4-3/4 inch bolt pattern but you will need to replace the spindle. Welding on a new spindle is a precision trade craft requiring a special jig installed by an experienced professional. Otherwise, you could continue having the same problem. Depending on the overall length and if you currently have a round or square, that will determine which spindle...

  • Can Trailer Axles be Flipped Upside Down
Axles that are flipped over like yours means that the bow that is in the center of the axle is pointed the wrong way. This means that the axle capacity is reduced because that bow, that needs to be pointed up, is part of what gives the axle its capacity. When weight is added it flattens out. Flipped axles will also cause the tires and wheels to camber in at the tops which will lead to odd tire wear and a lot of wear on the suspension. You will want to keep the axles that you get in the...

  • Dexter Axle Identification and Replacement Parts for 2-3/8 Inch Diameter Axle
Your axle is a 3,500 lb axle. The Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-3/4 # 845476UC3 is the hub you have with the bearings that fit your #84 spindle. The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-3/4 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-5475-35-K is also a fit, but if you just want the bearing kit use # BK2-100.

  • Replacement Hanger Kit, Leaf Springs, Brake Assemblies and Drums for Triple Axle 3,500 lb Axles
We have ways to help you find out what you need but you'll have to do some measuring to determine exactly what your trailer needs. Judging by what you listed it looks like you have a triple axle setup that uses 3,500 lb axles. So lets first start with leaf springs. For that you'd want the 3,500 lb springs part # e54SR which matches the length of what you have now and the capacity. The Dexter Suspension Kit part # K71-360-00 you referenced would then work well with this. So now for brakes...

  • Outer Diameter of Center of 3.5K Trailer Hub/Drum Assembly with 5 on 4-3/4 Bolt Pattern
I went out to the warehouse to measure hub and drum assembly # 845476UC3 for you. The outer diameter of the center of the hub (where the wheel pilot hole will fit around) is 2.60 inches. Just a hair less than 2-5/8 inches. This will only matter if 1) the wheel pilot hole is too small or 2) if a wheel secures to a hub using wheel bolts instead of lug nuts. Since this hub/drum has studs of lug nuts the pilot hole on the wheel can be larger, just not smaller.

  • Replacement Hub Recommendation for Dexter Hub 8-250
So I have your hub narrowed down to a few different possibilities but we need to know what your bolt pattern is to know for sure. We have the part # 84556UC3 for if your bolt pattern is 5 on 5 inch. We have the part # 845476UC3 for if your bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4 inch. Or, we have the part # 8-247-50UC3-EZ for the very popular bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inch. I attached an article that will help you identify your bolt pattern if you are unsure.

Yes, 2 of the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kits # 23-26-27 and 4 of the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assemblies # 845476UC3 will allow you to replace all your brake and hub components and have a 5 on 4.75" bolt pattern. You do have the option of going with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-468-469 as well if you prefer to have self-adjusting brakes. This will give you better brake feel as your brakes wear and saves you from having to constantly crawl under your trailer...

For a hub/drum with a 3,500 lb capacity and the bolt pattern of 5 on 4-3/4 inch like you said you need you'd want the Dexter part # 845476UC3 which would fit and work well. • Can Electric Brakes Be Installed On a Boat Trailer with 3,500 Lb Axle
Yes, the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly Kit part # 23-468-469 can be used on a boat trailer. In fact, most boat trailers now come from the factory with electric brakes as they are much more cost effective. I assume your trailer does not already have electric brakes so that means you are also going to need the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # 845476UC3, the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit part # HS381-9000, and the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway...

  • What Parts Are Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to a Trailer
You can put brakes just on one axle and save some money, many trailers are set up this way. But for the best braking performance and to decrease the amount of wear on just one set on one axle, the best bet is to get brakes on both axles. The first thing you are going to want to do is look at the axles to see if there are brake mounting flanges welded to the axle. If there is just a spindle that goes directly to the axle then there are no mounting flanges and you will need to have some...

  • Replacement Hubs with 5-on-4-3/4 Wheel Bolt Pattern
We do offer 5-on-4-3/4 hubs that you can see on the linked page. These include both idler hubs like # 845475UC1 and hub/drums like # 845476UC3. Be sure to check the bearings in your current hubs for their part numbers; new hubs have to use the same bearings or they will not fit on your spindles. The linked photo will show you where to find those part numbers. Also note that mobile home axles are intended for a single use only (to transport the MH) but not for ongoing use like a trailer axle.

Outer Bearing # LM-12749, inner diameter 0.8656 inches, works with the Race # LM-12711 which has an outer diameter of 1.81 inches. You should measure the outer dimension of your race to be sure that the LM-12711 race is correct. There is a possibility that other race part numbers could also work with the LM-12749 bearing and have a slightly different outer diameter. The LM-12711 is the most commonly used race for this bearing though. I checked with our suppliers and at this time, we do...

We do not currently offer the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-468-469 you found with the brake drums as a package. You can do this by moving the axles from being above the leaf springs to below the leaf springs.
