Video Transcript for Tow Ready Padlock Style Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock Review

What's up everybody, it's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this locking hitch pin padlock combination. So what this is gonna do, is you're gonna take this, comes with two keys, you can put it in your receiver here to lock up whatever accessory you have in there. Once it's lined up, you just run the pin through, add the padlock, it's all locked up. That way nobody can mess with any accessories you leave in your hitch. Let's check it out.

The lock's great for protecting those accessories, they're a good theft deterrent. Nothing's perfect but this will make sure that somebody can't just walk off of this when you're not around. So whether it's a bike rack that doesn't have an anti-rattle bolt or a draw bar like we have in here, a cargo carrier, there's a lot of options you can use this for to just make sure those accessories stay put. Let's go over some measurements real quick. So from end to end, that's gonna be end of this pin, the end of this padlock, it's gonna be six and three quarter inches.

And then you're gonna have a half inch diameter of the pin itself. And then on the flat portion of the pin to that padlock, is gonna be three and one eighth of an inch. Now it comes with two keys you can use. You can keep one on your key ring, you can keep one in your car, whatever you wanna do with that. You got a chrome plated pin, is gonna be nice, it's gonna hold up to the weather so you don't have to worry about rust or corrosion.

It's made to be on the back of your car long term. Overall, I think it's definitely a good addition to your drawbar or your accessory that it'll work with. It never hurts to keep it locked up when you're not around that way nobody messes with it. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out.

I hope this helped..

I needed a lock for my Pro Series 4 bike trailer as it only has a cotter pin and I was taking it off my van every time I went to the trail for fear it would get stolen. Giving it four stars since I haven't given it a test use but it fits perfectly! I could not be more grateful to a previous reviewer for suggesting this solution.

This has more than earned its fifth star! It still fits great and gives peace of mind. I anticipate it will continue to work for years to come.

by:

I have used this locking pin a few times now and it works great. Fits my class 1 hitch receiver well.

by:

This fits the threaded hitch pin on Reese Pro Series 4bike hitch rack perfectly. Before it was just a cotter pin but now I can lock it up while away biking, great piece of mind.

by:

This did not go through the 1 1/4 receiver that I purchased from you. I damaged it while trying to install it. I called your office and the lady that took my call said she was not able to do anything due to the product being damaged. I tried to explain to her t that the receiver is the problem it does not align with the holes on my bike stand which they are straight. It’s a kuat bike rack. Nevertheless I am real disappointed with her response and lack of attention.

I am so sorry to hear that this did not fit your application. I see that you have a Kuat bike rack that requires a specific hitch lock, I suggest you contact Kuat about this issue.

Excellent Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, works very well!

by:

Quick and easy. The keyhole cover makes this even better.

by:

This works with the Pro Series 4 Bike Rack 2" Hitch Pin as described
and secures the bike rack to the vehicle preventing theft.
Has a cover which even covers the lock to prevent weather damage.

I am new to bike racks and hitches. I just bought the Pro Series 4 Bike Rack for my Chevy Venture Van with 2 inch hitch. How does this 1 14 hitch lock work with a 2 inch hitch? I dont understand this. Please explain. Thanks ... James

This lock may work since the overall length is long enough to accommodate a 1-1/4 inch hitch, but also keep in mind that the diameter is smaller for this lock (1/2 vs 5/8). For your 2 inch hitch and bike rack I recommend using a lock that is designed for 2 inch hitches, like the # FHG63VR. This lock will fit more securely and is rated appropriately for your 2 inch hitch accessories.

by:

A standard-type hitch lock for preventing the theft of whatever you have inserted into your hitch receiver socket. Seems to be good quality and comes with a weatherproof cover to protect the key tumblers.

No problems - as advertised. HINT to newbies: :- : From past experience I strongly suggest not discarding or losing the weather-resistant cover.

by:

I purchased this receiver lock to secure and prevent theft of the
Oval LED Brake Light Trailer Hitch Receiver Cover - CR-017 I purchased at the same time. I found it easy to install and the lock section was easy to engage and unlock and remove. Very good quality for the price paid. Only reason I didn't give it the highest ranking is that the included lock cover doesn't have a way to secure it to the lock section to prevent its loss. I will buy other products from etrailer.com in the future.

by:

I used the locking portion of this on the threaded hitch pin from my reese eclipse bike rack to lock my bike rack into the hitch.

by:

I just received the two products I ordered including the lock shown in the picture herein above.
I immediately installed the flag and lock and found the whole process easy and fun.
Thanks for getting the order to me so fast.
This was my second order from you and I loved it.

The Ready Hitch Lock works great. No one has been able to steal it. Yahoo.

by:

I ordered the wrong size Hitch lock at first, but I'm amazed at the customer service etrailer has given me. I called, they sent me the correct size and return information for the one that was too large. The locks fits and is just what I was looking for. Again, TRULY AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'd definitely buy from etrailer again.

by:

Fits well and works great. I purchased an adapter for my hitch to go from the 1-1/4 to 2-1/2. This locks the adapter in place so that someone can't disconnect the adapter and walk off with my bike rack.

by:

As stated on your web site the trailer hitch receiver lock does the job. Giving the me the security I need the my Pro Series Bike Rack(63124) with the Anti Rattler Hitch Bolt.

by:

Great way to lock a bike rack, trailer, cargo carrier or anything else on. Lock is a little big and clunky, I wish the rubber lock cover cap was permanently attached to the lock, because I bet it is only a short matter of time before I lose that piece.

by:

Looks good, just got it.

If you
bought this as recommend with
"Pro Series Eclipse 4 Bike Rack for 2" Hitches - Tilting - 63124", toss the bar that comes with it (it doesn't fit) and put the lock part on the bar that comes with the Bike Rack!

by:

Great fit for the Pro Series Eclipse bike rack for 2" hitch. As described in the bike rack description, use the bolt they provide with the lock attachment here. It also works as a stabilizer for the bike rack within the hitch when it is tightened. Would highly recommend!

by:

I've had the lock for my bike trailer for a year now. No problems thus far and it has worked great every time I've used it.

It is a well made product and is very reliable! I would buy it again.

by:

It’s a good feeling to know that my trailer can’t be unhitched and stolen with this lock. Quality construction and heavy duty. Very happy with it...

by:

This receiver lock works great, and seems to last forever. The pin rolls out of the way of the wire harness, and makes it easier to lock. I have the larger version and purchased this for a new car/hitch combination.

by:

the problem i had was ,i had to break my old lock off ,and i could not replace it .then i came up with a solution i bought your lock and used the lock part only the stem on my old lock was almost 12 inches long but had the 1/2 shaft size so i just tried your lock part of your lock and it worked like i thought .the lock was used on a tri -pod for a rv fifth wheel trailer .so thank you for making a fine lock.

by:

Rare to find a hitch receiver lock with longer than 3" shank. This one fits the bill. Wish that the rubber cap is attached to the padlock body so that it'll stay attached.

by:

Very strong and well made product. I bought a cargo carrier and did not want to take it on and off all the time. This locking pin gives the added security of protecting the carrier from theft when locked in place.

by:

Excellent until the 3rd time I used it. Locking cylinder fell apart. E Trailer did get it replaced, hoping for better results going forward.

by:

I have used this lock on a previous hitch and it is very easy to install and unlock - much better than the hitch locks with a cylinder lock. The cover keeps the key way free of dirt and moisture. This is the way to go.

  • Trailer Hitch Lock 5200 Will Not Turn - What Can I Do?
It sounds like the tumbler in your Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 5200 is stuck. Your best option would be to repeatedly direct WD40 into the key hole with the straw and then insert and remove the key several times. Usually repeating this process will allow the tumbler to release. If not, there is not any other kind of troubleshooting we can do for a stuck lock, and it will need to be replaced.

  • Hitch Lock Recommendation for a Reese Eclipse 4 Bike Rack 63124
The Reese bike carrier # 63124 comes with an anti-rattle hitch bolt that does not lock. To lock this bike carrier to your trailer hitch, you can use the padlock end from hitch lock # 5200 with the included hitch bolt. The padlock will secure to the end of the hitch bolt to create an anti-rattle hitch lock that fits 2" trailer hitches.

  • Locking Hitch Pin for a Dealer Installed 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch on a 2010 Subaru Outback
What you will want to do is determine the width of the receiver where the lock will go. You can then compare that to the inside with or usable span dimensions listed on the hitch lock product pages. The Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, # 5200, has an inside width of 3-1/8 inches. A lock made for a 2 inch receiver will not fit because it has a larger diameter and will not fit in the hitch pin hole on a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

  • Troubleshooting Hitch Lock that Won't Turn All the Way to Release
I would recommend hitting the lock with some WD40 to try and get the lock core to release. Use the straw that comes with it to direct the lube into the core as much as possible. You may have to let it soak for a few minutes. Working the key in and out of the core several times can help it penetrate and free up the stuck portion of it.

  • How to Fix Hitch Pin Lock that Stopped Allowing Key to Turn
Most likely it's a stuck tumbler. Your best option would be to daily direct WD40 into the key hole with the straw and then insert and remove the key several times. Eventually the tumbler will release and the key will start working again. Otherwise it's faulty and would need to be replaced.

Good question. There is a tech tip at the bottom of the description for bike rack # 63124 about this very issue: This bike carrier comes with an anti-rattle hitch bolt that does not lock. To lock this bike carrier to your trailer hitch, you can use the padlock end from hitch lock # 5200 (sold separately) with the included hitch bolt. Use of a hitch lock such as Tow Ready # 5200 or the Hollywood Racks # HRLHPTC will NOT reduce your hitch's tongue weight (TW) capacity. TW is generally more of a function of the host vehicle itself - its frame strength - and of the hitch. Some bike racks use a proprietary type threaded hitch pin/lock that will work only on racks from that manufacturer.
