Video Transcript for Tow Ready Butterfly Style Trailer Coupler Review

Hey everybody. My name's Ryan. And here at etrailer, we install, test fit, and review a lot of different parts, that way we could try to answer any questions those of you might have. And that's exactly what we're doing here today. We're going to be taking a look at the Tow Ready trailer coupler lock. So I know trailer security is something a lot of people think about.

I know I do, especially when you're not using it. So whether you have it in storage or in front of the house, whatever the case may be, you're going to want something that'll help you sleep a little bit better at night. And that's exactly what this lock is going to accomplish. So what this is going to do whenever you have it on your trailer, it's going to prevent the handle from becoming unlocked. And so in the coupler itself, it's going to keep everything nice and tight, and that's going to physically prevent a ball from becoming secured to that coupler, so you won't be able to hook up to it. So that's going to keep things nice and secure and hopefully stop someone from hooking up to your trailer and taking off with it.But what you can also use this for is a surefire way to make sure that the trailer does stay connected to your vehicle whenever you are towing it.

So when you have it unlocked, just imagine if this is your ball mount here going to your tow vehicles. So hook it up to your trailer, lock the latch and hit the road.Well, what can happen sometimes is, especially on worn out couplers, you may not lock this completely and you start hitting some bumps. The latch can open up and then you can separate. And that's not good. Well, by using the lock, when you're hooked up, you lock the down.

If you put this in there and secure it down, what this is going to do is ensure that you did indeed completely lock your handle. And it's going to stop it from being released on accident. So there's no way that you will have an accidental disconnect. Now, what's nice about this lock is the pin length. Whenever you have it completely closed like this, there's only going to be three-quarters of an inch. And the pin diameter itself is going to be a quarter inch.

That's super common for a ton of different couplers. So it should work with just about any trailer. There might be some exceptions if you kind of have an odd ball set up or something like that. Even if that is the case, there's other options available out there for you. But since it is relatively narrow, we're not going to have a ton of space in there. And I say that because it's going to be extremely difficult to get this lock off. So if someone was dead set on taking your setup, it would at least take them a little bit of time.So just kind of give you an example. I found a set of pretty small bolt cutters. I don't think I've seen a set much smaller than this. And even if I try to get them in there, I still can't. If I push down just about any angle, I can't get around that pin to cut it. And chances are pretty good, if someone is out up to no good, this is probably the tool that they're going to have. So even if they do try, they're probably going to move on and find another target. However, it goes without saying that this isn't indestructible. You could potentially get maybe a grinder in there, or hacksaw or something like that. But in all honesty, if someone's wanting to remove that, for one, they're probably not going to have that tool. And for two, they're not going to be out here hacking away, banging on stuff, thrown sparks trying to cut this off, making a bunch of noise. So a really simple, yet effective, setup. So the way to actually put the lock on or take it off is pretty easy. On one side of it, we're going to have a key slot there. It's going to come with a couple keys. And when you put this in, you're just going to turn it, back it off, and that's going to unthread. And you're able to pull the lock out. Now the side piece does come completely off, if you want it to. I kind of find it unnecessary for a lot of trailers. Most of the times you can leave a couple of threads on there and still manage to get it in pretty easily. But when you do have it in, you'll simply just tighten that key back down and remove the key. Now, there is one thing I did notice. It seems every now and again, you'll be able to pull the key out. And it's designed like that. But something I wanted to mention to say, if you really tighten it down, you're not able to easily pull the key out. So don't try to force it out. What you can do is back it off a hair and put a little bit of pressure on that key and it'll pop right out. So it might take a little getting used to, but once you know that's how it works, really not a big deal. Now with that being said, this is made from steel. And something that I would be curious about is how this is going to hold up over time. It does have a really nice coating on it. So I see it staying in pretty good shape, but my biggest concern would be the threads themselves. I say that because if water or moisture or anything does get in there, and if you do start to get a little bit of corrosion, and say, it sets for awhile, I could see it being an issue, trying to have enough power in this key to break it loose or tighten it down completely. So one thing I would suggest doing, just to play it safe, is use a little bit of this anti-seize on the threads. And even if anything does get in there, this is going to prevent it from seizing up and sticking together. So just kind of a quick tip that I wanted to mention. And if you need some of this anti-seize, you can grab it right here at etrailer. So when it comes to these locks, there's a lot of different choices out there to choose from. So I just wanted to grab another one and just kind of compare the two. So the one I grabbed is the MaxxTow, and looking at them side by side and how they work, they almost feel identical. Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem using either one on my own trailer. With that being said, really the only difference I noticed is the Tow Ready, the key operation, if you will, is a little bit smoother, if that makes sense. That's not to say, though, that the MaxxTow is difficult or anything like that. I think this one might get better over time. If I unthread it here, I can kind of show you. This one, the coating on it is kind of in the threads a little bit. So after that coding kind of wears off, I could see that key being a little bit smoother. But just something I wanted to point out and mentioned to you guys.So this type of lock isn't the only type of product that can help keep your trailer secure, especially in a storage-type situation. Another thing you can use in conjunction with this lock is actually a coupler lock, and this is an etrailer version. And the way these work is these will actually go around your coupler like this and lock down, and what locks down is this pin. It gets pushed up and you can take your key, lock it, and it won't fall back down. And what that's going to do is when you have it on, push and then got to that pin up, is you're not going to be able to remove it. So again, it'll block this area out and prevent someone from putting their ball inside. So just another easy way to go a step further and really make sure everything is safe.So all in all at the end of the day, a lock you really can't go wrong with. It's a super simple way to help keep everything secure, whether you're pulling your trailer or you got it in storage..

Trailer Coupler Lock - Butterfly Style - 3008

Works great for my Minnekota trolling m otor

by:

The item worked perfectly for the purpose for which I ordered it. I am using it to lock a gun case I am using to carry fishing rods on an airplane for a fishing trip to Canada in August. I have had a few of these locks in the past for locking my utility trailer.

by:

So far so good. Trailer is stored indoors when not in use so I can’t tell how well it’ll hold up to the elements but so far it looks and operates as brand new.

by:

Found what I needed. The help pages are a great help. installrd and works fine.

Does not fit my trailer tongue latch.

@Mike7329 The # 3008 coupler lock fits spans up to 3/4" and has a 1/4" pin diameter. To find out which lock of this type would work for you, measure the width of the latch, and choose a lock that is compatible with that span. Make sure the lock you choose has a compatible pin diameter.

Year later still works great for locking gooseneck hitch and pins. One key showed up broken, oddly but no matter. I Love etrailer. Going to get more for the latches that slide over a pin hole like on the back of cargo trailers at the ramp. These ride upright so they don't slam up against the trailer.

by:

This lock was purchased to lock the load bearing pin on a Bulldog BX-1 gooseneck tube (the tube portion, not the coupler itself, since my entire tube was stolen).

There is not a locking pin manufactured to Bulldog's knowledge that suits these needs. Standard coupler locks are 1/4" shank usually, and the end of the load bearing pin has a .20" hole for the retainer pin. Bulldog sees no reason why it couldn't be drilled out to support a 1/4" coupler lock that will fit on the end of the 3/4" diameter load pin.

I have not yet performed this action but will upload pics when complete. May even get a 5th star if all goes well.

by:

This was a small disappointment in my order. When using the lock the first time, I noticed the pin was not fully seated in the lock. Basically the pin is supposed to be seated and permanently set in one side of the unit. As you turn the key the pin travels with that half of the lock. I had to pound the pin into the hole. Now the lock works as advertised. I think it will work fine on the trailer. I won't have to return the lock. That being said, if security is paramount to you, this is not high security. This is more of just a deterrent.

by:

etrailer is such a good company to buy from I hate to write bad review on such a small item.
The lock jammed with the key in it and I had to cut it off about the fifth time I used it.

etrailer however will always be my go to for trailer products this was just a fluke occurrence.

by:

The lock is exactly as described. It does not fully close on my 2 5/16 ball hitch latch but works. It was noted that it was for the smaller hitches and I took a chance. I will work great on my small trailer.

by:

Ive used these in the past and they work great. They are made a bit cheaper these days but what isnt. This will lock the coupler to the ball... but you will still have to lock the drawbar to the receiver with a locking pin, or remove the drawbar. Anyway... a great concept and easiest way to protect theft.

by:

Ordered 3 of these little locks - Exactly what I needed to secure my 3 trailers when stored or attached to my truck - Perfect fit - Easy to use and adds that extra little bit of security to discourage theft - 5 Stars

by:

No problems with locking mechanism or keys works great and keeps people honest. Definitely would recommend while trailering Boat or Rv

Purchased a Drop-Tail Trailer without a Trailer Jack. etrailer recommended the products, mailed them FREE & got everytrhing in TWO DAYS. Installed without any issues. Highly Recommend!!

by:

I bought one of these years ago, and gave it away with a boat and trailer combo I sold last week. I was happy to locate the same unit online, but it seems as though the price has risen substantially since the original one I purchased. An excellent unit, though.

by:

All items were received within three business days of placing the order and were easily tracked from the tracking site etrailer sent. They were packed well and received in great condition. Thank you for the great customer support and speed of delivery. I will use etrailer for my future needs.

by:

Using these to lock hitch pins in lieu of a locking hitch pin. They work great.

by:

I owned a Fulton butterfly lock that served me well for 25+ years which finally gave out. Right out of the package I was somewhat disappointed with your product as the keys are not brass as the photo depicts and the lock's color appears to be painted. Time will tell if it the performance meets my expectations. Thank you.

by:

I receivced my trailer's lock in about 5 days and it was very easy to install. It look's good and stronge and looking forward to see how it proforms in the long run.

by:

Excellent product - this my second one, have used the 1st one
for years without any problems! This one goes on my other
boat trailer - staying with what works !!!

by:

Tight fit. Took a moment to figure out that the key actually screws apart the lock. Tight fit so would be tough to cut. If it stays clean should be good, but if it gets gritty, it may be difficult to unscrew.

by:

Great lock and we used it this past weekend. Very easy to use and worked as advertised. eTrailer continues to provide great products at reasonable prices!

by:

The hitch lock is a simple and effective way to secure your trailer to your tow vehicle.

by:

I was completely satisfied with your service. Accurate tracking was available during the entire process.

by:

This lock is great. Once it's on, we never worry about our camper. Very easy to use.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for and at the best price around. Just wish you could pick what key number you get, so all of our trailers could be keyed the same.

  • Does Master Lock Heavy-Duty Coupler and Latch Lock Combo # 3784DAT Fit a 2 Inch Coupler
That's interesting, because Master Lock coupler lock # 3784DAT does indeed fit a 1-7/8 inch. 2 inch, and 2-5/16 inch coupler. Even the instructions from their site show it fitting a 1-7/8 and 2-5/16 inch coupler. They don't show the 2 inch because it does not require any special steps (there is a little insert, included, that has to be on for 1-7/8 inch and UFP couplers but removed otherwise). But this may not be the best option for coupler # BD43805W0317. It doesn't have a flange or...

There are a couple of ways you can lock the Reese Elite Series Underbed Rail Adapter for Standard 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP30156 in your truck. You can use the Trailer Coupler Lock # 3008 to feed through the overlapping handle holes on the adapter. You would use the lock in place of the lynch pins. This would prevent the adapter feet from being turned to remove the adapter. I have inlcuded a picture of the handle point I am referencing. You could also use a cable lock like the Trimax...

  • Will a 7-Way Round to 6-Way Adapter Work with a Semi Tractor
A 7-way round pin on a semi tractor normally has different functions than a 7-Way round pole found on something like an RV. I have included a picture showing what the functions are on the 7-Way part of the adapter. If this matches what your semi tractor has then it will work properly. If your 7-Way has different functions, which you can check by using a circuit tester such as # 3008, then you will need to re-wire the 7-Way to match the adapter or install a different 7-Way that will match.

  • Is There a Locking Threaded Hitch Pin Available to Holt the Receiver in the EcoHitch 306-X7365?
With the bolt in question being 5/8-11 by 4 inches long, we do not have a threaded locking pin available. However, you could drill a 1/4" hole in the threaded end of the bolt and then use the Tow Ready Trailer Coupler Lock # 3008 in the drilled hole. This isn't the most elegant solution, but will work.

I recommend using a straight pin style lock like part # e98889 which has a 7/8" span with a 1/4" diameter pin. This coupler lock can also be keyed alike to a trailer hitch lock like part # e98880 if both were ordered at the same time. I have attached a review video of the coupler lock...
