Video Transcript for Curt 2-5/16" Chrome Trailer Hitch Ball Review

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be checking out this CURT hitch ball. We're gonna be putting it on our ball mount right here. It's gonna be a two and 5/16-inch size. Let's check it out. Hitch ball is gonna be an important part of your ball mount, so you're gonna make sure you get the right size for the coupler on your trailer, because it's what your trailer's gonna sit on.

So this is two and 5/16. And then the shank here is gonna be an inch diameter. So make sure that matches up with the ball mount you want to use. We'll drop that through. We got a lock nut and a regular nut that we'll put on there underneath.

Now I'm just gonna hand tighten it today. You're gonna want to make sure you torque it down to the right specifications when you get it. You can't just tow with a loose ball on the ball mount. So as you're tightening it down, you can see the flat sides on this, the base here of the ball. That's gonna be good for the wrench to get in there and hold that tight, so you can really tighten down the bottom to make sure it's torched.

This two and 5/16 hitch ball has a gross trailer weight rating of 7,500 pounds. It's gonna have a tongue weight rating of 750 pounds. So just keep that in mind with what you wanna haul. You want to go with the lowest common denominator in your setup. So the ball's rated at 7,500 gross trailer weight rating.

Your ball mount here is only rated at 6,000, and the hitch might be less than that. So whatever the smallest number is, go with that one, so you don't stress out your setup. The ball is gonna have a chrome-plated nickel finish on it. It's gonna hold up to the elements. If you leave it on the back of your vehicle all the time, it won't rust and corrode. Also, when you go to hook up to your coupler, it will scratch it up a little bit. That just comes with towing a trailer. That was a quick look at this two and 5/16-inch ball from CURT. Now just make sure you get those measurements on the ball mount you want to use it with, that shank being an inch diameter, and making sure your trailer is a coupler with a two and 5/16-inch ball that will work with it. I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and hope this helped.

Met all expectations. I wish it was packaged better with my other items. The ball was loose in the box and was smashing into my new chromed draw bar during shipping. The wrench flats were helpful installing this into the draw bar.

by:

Looks like a good quality tow ball. I'll never be able to tell you though. I cut the shank off to build my own trailer coupler lock for cheaper than a purpose built coupler lock. This ball plus the e98883 coupler pin lock makes my trailers secure in my yard as well as anywhere we go. Trailer can't be towed away if there is already a hitch ball locked in the coupler and there a only enough shank left to grab the ball but not enough left to hook it to a new hitch reciever. And by buying enough keyed-alike coupler pin locks, one key fits all trailers unlike previous setups I tried where each coupler lock had its own key.

by:

  • Can Extra Long Hidden Hitch Ball Mount # 80232 Use 2-5/16 inch Hitch Ball
Yes, you can install a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball on the platform of the Hidden Hitch ball mount part # 80232 that you referenced. You'd just need a ball like the Curt 2-5/16 inch hitch ball part # C40005 which is designed to fit 1 inch diameter ball holes like what that ball mount has.

  • Weight of Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution RP66558 & Does it Get Added to Tongue Weight
Good questions, and as far as the weight, I checked with the manufacturer and the total weight is 73 lbs for the Steadi-Flex you asked about, which is the following part number: - Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66558 The Steadi-Flex # RP66558 does not count as tongue weight as it is essentially part of the hitch, but it does count against total payload, which you'll want to keep in mind. This is a very smart choice for a weight distribution hitch because...

  • Sway Control For Hitch Not Rated For Use With Weight Distribution
Good question, and the hitch on your Audi is not rated for use with weight distribution, so what I recommend instead is a friction sway control set up. This will provide you with better control over your trailer to give you a much more controlled, steady, and comfortable towing experience. The way it works is the ball plate from the kit attaches to your trailer frame, and the other end attaches to a tab on a ball mount, like in the accompanying photo. Just keep in mind this will only...

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13171 and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13395 have a few big differences. The main one is that the # C13171 is only confirmed to fit Jeep Cherokee model years 2014 - 2019 so you wouldn't be able to use it on your 2020 Jeep Cherokee. Another main difference is the # C13171 has a maximum gross trailer weight capacity of 5,000lbs (maximum GTW when used with weight distribution of 6,000lbs) and a maximum tongue weight capacity of 750lbs (maximum TW...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For A Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BHW
Hi Bill, The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA92-00-0450 has a tongue weight range of 200lbs - 450lbs so you'd be right around the middle of the capacity when loaded, making this a great choice. This doesn't come with a hitch ball so you'll need either a 2" ball # 40038 or 2-5/16" hitch ball # C40005 depending on your coupler size. I've attached a short video below where we'll show you how this system works.

As long as you use the same diameter shank you can definitely replace your 2" ball. I recommend the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 1" Diameter x 2-1/8" Long Shank - Chrome - 7,500 lbs # C40005. Since this has the same 1" diameter shank you will not have an issue using it with your existing ball mount. This ball has a 7,500 lb capacity and comes with a 1 year warranty.

  • Recommendation For Reducing Rear Sag On a 2022 Toyota Highlander Towing a Pop Up Camper
I recommend using a Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0450 as there is not any suspension enhancement available for your 2022 Toyota Highlander XLE. The Fastway e2 will not only help to reduce rear end sag but it will also add trailer sway prevention to make towing safer. You can use this hitch on trailers weighing up to 4,500lbs and a tongue weight up to 450lbs. You will need either a 2" # 40038 or 2-5/16" # C40005 hitch ball to match your pop up campers coupler.

To get the best performance out a weight distribution hitch you'll want to first know your trailer's fully loaded tongue weight. The weight distribution hitch in the question you looked at was based on the loaded trailer tongue weight. It is impossible to find the right WDH based on the vehicle alone. It looks like your 2018 R-Pod 179 has a dry tongue weight of 292 lbs so based on the GVWR you're probably maxing out tongue weight around 400 lbs.
