Sway Control For Hitch Not Rated For Use With Weight Distribution

Question:

The Audi Q5 TDI has a 4400 pound towing capacity the RV is 3500 pounds Audi does not recommend a weight distribution hitch on these vehicles so I am looking for the ball hitch set up on this vehicle I am not sure what to use Audi is obviously Confident that you don’t need a WD as the Q7 has a 7000 pound towing capacity and they do not want a WD used on those either many people have used in Anderson WD and have had no problems but I would like your suggestion on the correct set up

Good question, and the hitch on your Audi is not rated for use with weight distribution, so what I recommend instead is a friction sway control set up. This will provide you with better control over your trailer to give you a much more controlled, steady, and comfortable towing experience.

The way it works is the ball plate from the kit attaches to your trailer frame, and the other end attaches to a tab on a ball mount, like in the accompanying photo. Just keep in mind this will only work with trailers that have electric brakes and not surge brakes. Exactly what you need is the following:

- Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660

- Ball Mount with Sway-Control Tab # D320

- 2" Hitch Ball # 40038 or 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C40005

- Pin and Clip # ML1465DAT or Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # e98880

You will need either the pin and clip or hitch lock in order to secure it to your Audi's receiver. This set up is the best option for the most controlled ride for any hitch that is not rated for use with weight distribution, which is why I recommend it for you.
