If you take your boat down to the coast every weekend, you know how corrosive saltwater can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.
The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. And the stainless steel calipers are rustproof. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.
Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.
Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.
The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.
In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.
Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.
If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.
For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.
And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 12 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes. So we do have the two brake assemblies here so it's gonna be enough to replace the brakes on a single 5,200 pound to 6,000 pound capacity axle with the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 12 inches in diameter and we've got the 6 on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. So these are going to work with your wheels that are 15 inches and larger.
Upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is going to have several benefits. It's going to help dramatically shorten your stopping distance. It's also going to provide smoother, more controlled braking than you're used to with your drum brakes. So it's gonna help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling as you're going down the road. These do feature ceramic brake pads that are going to increase your stopping power and it's difficult to see, but up here at the top we do have a large 2 1/4 inch diameter stainless steel piston that's gonna provide fast responsive braking for you.
So in addition to better performance, disc brakes do require less maintenance than your drum brakes, so it's gonna help save you time and money. We do have the one piece hub and rotor assembly so that's gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. We also have the vented design here that's gonna help dissipate heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. And these are a nice high-quality automotive-grade construction so they are gonna be very long lasting for you. Our hub and rotors and our brackets on the back here all have a Dacromat finish that is going to be excellent for rust and corrosion resistance.
It's got a a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating. And then our calipers are a stainless steel construction so they are going to be rust proof. So this is gonna be a great option for your saltwater boat trailers or trailers that are used in heavily treated roads that experience a lot of contact with salt so that these will hold up really well in those kind of conditions. Now the one caveat with disc brakes is that they do require a higher line pressure than your standard drum brakes, so you are gonna need to make sure that you have a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1500 psi or above in order to activate your brakes. So if you don't already have an actuator and lines, brake lines, rated for that pressure, we do sell those separately here at etrailer.com.
So you will need to get those installed as well. But this set does come with these two Dacromat-plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the pre-installed half-inch bolts. You're also going to get 12 of these half-inch stainless steel lug nuts to hold your wheel in place. You're gonna get the two stainless steel calipers as well as the two Dacromat-plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets that I mentioned before. You can see these do have the five-bolt brake flange configuration, so it's gonna be very easy to get these installed on your axle. Now I do wanna point out I have our calipers mounted on the top here just for display purposes. When you actually go to install them, they're gonna be on the side and that side support design is gonna help put the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts themselves. So it's gonna help your bolts last longer and gonna take some of the wear off of them. You are gonna get the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts as well, so that you can get that all put together and mounted properly. In addition to our main unit there, we also have our inner and outer bearings. And so those are gonna make sure that everything are rotating smoothly around your spindle on your axle. And then we have the races that are inside here. So we have our inner and outer race that are pre-installed. That's where the bearings are gonna sit in. You can see all that information on the screen there, part numbers if you need to look those up any more. And then this is going to be a grease model, so we've got our grease seals that will be on the back to keep that grease in on the backside. These are a 10-36 model. You can see that information on the screen there. It's got an inner diameter of 2 1/4 of an inch and an outer diameter of 3.376 inches. And we're also going to have our E-Z-lube grease caps that have an outer diameter of 2.45 inches and the removable plug there so that we can easily access our spindles, put our grease in there using those E-Z-lube spindles in between our normal changes. So like I said, this is gonna be a a great system for your trailers that are gonna experience a lot of contact with salt. Having that Dacromat finish and stainless steel construction is going to make these hold up really well. And then you're also gonna get the major upgrade benefits of having the disc brakes over your drum brakes. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..
