Do I Need a Braking System for Flat Towing?

A braking system is a must when towing a vehicle behind your motorhome. Without it, the weight of the towed car can create a safety hazard, strain your RV's brakes, and affect the warranty of both your car and motorhome. Most states legally require a supplemental braking system, so if you don't use one and you end up in an accident (which is more likely since your RV takes longer to come to a full stop), your insurance and liability headache just doubled. You also won't have any breakaway system; if there's an accidental disconnect, there's nothing to bring your car to a stop.

Pros of a Portable System

First, this system is great for DIYers, since you can get the basic installation done yourself. It's really only the braking monitor that will need to be wired and installed, and that's it.

Second, it offers you a lot of flexibility. It's easy to move from one toad (towed vehicle) to another - or, if you think you'll swap out your current vehicle for another one down the road, you can easily set the Even Brake up in your new toad.

How Does the Even Brake Work?

The Roadmaster Even Brake uses a built-in inertia sensor to detect when your flat tow setup begins to slow down as you apply the brakes in your motorhome. The moment the system recognizes the change in momentum, the actuator will press down the brake pedal of your toad proportionally: at the same time, with the same intensity. Meanwhile, the terrain-sensing technology keeps the unit from activating when you're just going over bumps in the road, so it doesn't brake when it doesn't need to.

Setting Up the Roadmaster Even Brake

You'll be setting up this portable unit in your toad every time you flat tow, so it's designed to be easy to do. And because it's so adjustable, it fits in almost any vehicle on the market.

Road Master Even Brake set up

Step 1: Position the Even Brake

Move the driver's seat all the way back and place the Even Brake on the floorboard. It's important that the unit sits as level as possible so the actuator has enough leverage to effectively push down the brake pedal, so adjust the feet of the unit to suit your floorboard if need be. Twist the feet by hand to get them to the height you want and then tighten the locknuts with a wrench.

Note: If your vehicle has a rubber floor mat, remove it before installation to keep the Even Brake from shifting out of position.

Step 2: Attach the brake pedal clamp

Road Master Even Brake air release button

Next you need to get the clamp securely attached to the brake pedal. Before you do anything else, make sure that all the air in the cylinder is released. Any excess air will keep it from extending properly. Hold down the air release button while you pull the clamp forward and extend the shaft, then release.

Road Master Even Brake adjustable feet

You'll pull back on the spring post to widen the jaws of the clamp. Make sure that the arrow is pointing up and the jaws close snugly around the pedal. Insert the pin into the slotted arm of the spring post to hold it in place.

Note: Some compact cars have pedals that are too small to use with the normal clamp. Use RM-9329-VW (sold separately) instead. Fits brake pedals up to 2" wide and 3" tall.

Road Master Even Brake seat pad

Now slide the driver's seat forward again so that it just touches the handle/seat pad. The handle should sit level with the part of the seat that you want it to push against. Adjust if needed.

Step 3: Plug in and power up

Road Master Even Brake seat pad

Plug the unit into the car's 12-volt outlet and plug the transmitter of the braking monitor into the unit. Press the Test button to boot up the unit and prepare it for flat towing. The Even Brake will run a self-diagnostic cycle and test out the brake clamp to make sure that everything's working properly. (If it's not, the LCD monitor will help you troubleshoot the problem.)

Once it gives you the green light, you're ready to go!

Braking Force and Sensitivity

The first time you set up the Even Brake, you'll need to program your Force and Sensitivity settings. Once you've set them, you won't need to change them unless you get a different vehicle or want to tinker with how your braking feels.

Even Brake force setting and sensitivity setting

The Force setting will determine how hard the unit presses your brake pedal. There are 3 levels: less, average, and more. A heavier vehicle will need more, while a small vehicle will need less. You can always adjust the setting up or down if it doesn't feel right.

The Sensitivity setting is very similar, with 3 levels of less, average, and more. This setting determines when the unit will activate. On the less setting, the unit will only activate when the motorhome brakes forcefully. On the more setting, it will activate when there's only a light tap on the brakes.

Troubleshoot with Digital Braking Monitor

Included with the Even Brake is a digital monitor for safety and peace of mind. This monitor, plugged into the 12V outlet in your motorhome and mounted on the dashboard, is a simple and convenient way to keep tabs on whether the system is working properly or if something is going wrong.

Road Master Even Brake transmitter

The transmitter in the toad connects directly to your car's brake light switch, so it's not just checking that the system is activating, but that the toad is actually braking. If the Even Brake does shift during travel, it could apply the brakes continuously or not at all. This could happen with any portable system, but with this handy monitor, you'll know right away if something goes wrong.

Road Master Even Brake Monitor

The Even Brake monitor uses LED lights, an LCD text display, and audible alerts to keep you fully informed. The 3 LEDs - green, yellow, and red - are a quick and easy way to see that the Even Brake is functioning and what it is doing. If you need more detail, the LCD display gives you full messages to help you troubleshoot.

The audible alert only sounds in the event of an emergency. This way you'll know right away if, for example, a breakaway has occurred, even if you aren't watching the monitor.

Breakaway System

The Even Brake also comes with a breakaway switch, an absolute must for safe flat towing. If there's ever an emergency situation where your toad becomes detached from the motorhome, the breakaway switch will immediately activate the brakes and bring the vehicle to a stop.

This switch mounts to the front of your toad and plugs into the braking monitor transmitter. It includes a pin that connects to your RV's hitch receiver with a breakaway cable. If the toad and RV become disconnected, the cable will pull the pin out of the switch and trigger the braking system. A reserve air supply in the operating unit will then apply the brakes in the car.

So I never used mine. This is for those trying to decide if they need one. I tow an F250 with a 43’ tag axle, with an 8.9l Cummings. Yes I can feel the truck back there but I have never had the need for additional braking. Crossing the Snoqualmie pass on I-90 or driving through the cascades, I have no problems slowing with the engine brake. I have a big rig and tow a big truck so if this is your set up I’d give it a shot before committing to such an expensive item that I never use. I’m sure smaller rigs pulling larger trucks will benefit from a device like this.

Very happy I received it, normal great service from etrailer but had a shipping issue, (shipper's fault). I will always go through etrailer first for anything RV related. I will be back!

by:

I ordered a complete towing package from etrailer for my Sprinter RV to tow a Hyundai Accent. The Roadmaster Even Brake was the supplemental braking system that etrailer recommended. The system has worked flawlessly. After the original set-up, it literally takes all but 2 minutes to either put in or take out and stores neatly in the trunk of my Accent when not in use. The instructions for use and adjustment are clear and easy to understand. After a year of use, I couldn't be happier with this system.

Im happy to say that my towing package from etrailer is as reliable as they day we bought it and it has towed our little car around from coast to coast more times than I care to remember. At this point, I can hook up our car in my sleep! Thanks.

Very nice piece of equipment. Installation was no problem. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. It fits nicely in 2017 Tacoma. Initial drive showed a noticeable improvement in stopping smoothness without adjusting any of the settings from normal yet.

Great customer service from William and the team at E Trailer. Kept me updated at all times throughout the process.

by:

etrailer never contacted me because of delay. etrailer forwarded order to supplier. Customer service for etrailer is so bad. It wasn't until I contacted etrailer some 5-6 months later to get refund. This could have been a better experience had etrailer recommended a replacement product. etrailer is now my last choice!
Last person was very rude that I spoke to about this product

2015 Jeep Cherokee

Great product, but when ordering you need to request any updated supplemental technicians bulletins for your specific vehicle (my vehicle = 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk). Installation using the included product installation instructions exactly (not being told that there were updated technicians bulletins) caused the vehicle battery to run down to the point where I couldn't operate any vehicle electronics or start the vehicle. A call e-Trailer provided updated information. The manufacturer (Roadmaster) was aware of the issue and provided solution instructions. Had this been offered when ordered, I would have avoided having to deal with a dead battery and extra installation time. When installed using the updated information, the product works great.
