Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Vinyl Coated Safety Cables with Clevis Hook Review

Hi, everyone, Aidan here with etrailer.com and today we're gonna be taking a look at this pair of Dutton-Lainson safety cables. So this is gonna come in a pack of two and these are gonna be 5/16ths cables with a vinyl coating on the outside. Now the vinyl coating's nice because it's actually going to keep noise down to a minimum. If you're worried about any sort of protection with your vehicle or your trailer here it's not gonna be as damaging as bare metal but it's also just gonna be quieter. These are kind of hitting against other metal surfaces. They're not really gonna make any noise back here so it's a nice little convenience feature.

These are going to be very tightly coiled, so when they're not engaged, they do stay up off the ground pretty well for our trailer here and just in general, when they're hooked up they're gonna stay elevated, and they're not gonna drag. You have a nice clevis hook on the end here so they'll snap onto the safety chain loops, and they won't accidentally come off on their own, so everything is nice and secure. Now fully extended, they can be up to 40 inches long so plenty long for our application here today. I think it should be plenty long for most other applications out there. They can be used with trailers up to 6,500 pounds.

So just keep that in mind with your towing setup that you get the right rated chains. Now it doesn't come with its own hardware. The way we have it set up today these pins just go through and it's all set but if you need to pick up your own hardware it will require 5/8ths bolts, washers, and lock nuts so just keep that in mind when you're picking these out but otherwise let's check out how we got 'em installed. To get started with our installation, we're gonna remove our old safety chain first. Now there's not really anything wrong with these ones but we wanted to show you the process.

For this trailer today, we're actually going to have a cotter pin on the end here so we'll just take some needle nose pliers. We can bend those ends back together here. It's a little hard for me to see over the edge here but we can get those bent back straight so we can pull it through and free up the chain. So once we've got that out, we can pull this pin out and then free up the safety chain on the other side too. Now we can take our new pair of safety chains or in this case, a cable, we're gonna slide this free end in the middle there and secure it with that pin.

Like we had it before on either side. And then repeat that process on both sides. Once both sides are connected, you can run them to the safety chain loops on our vehicle, hook them up. You can see that coiled tension holds 'em up really well. And then we're ready to hit the road and that'll complete our look at and installation of the Dutton-Lainson safety cables. Thanks for watching..

worked out great, only issue is the little safety clips, i had to cut them down to make the hooks work on my 2020 Tundra hitch.

by:

High quality, no brainer to install.....All Good!!!!

by:

Purchased to replace the original safety chains on the trailer that started rusting after a couple years. These cables are probably more than I need, but so much better than the chains. Since they are coiled, they stay up out of the way and don’t drag on the ground.
Worked out better than I expected.

by:

So far so good, I hooked them up to my camper and, I'm looking forward to not hearing the jingle of chains. Also my stock camper chains were too short for my Reese adjustable class V ball mount. You may want to figure out how to attach them before ordering. I simply used the hooks from my old chains as they have a removable pin, and shortened the chains so there is only one link between the chain and the hook that now clips into the eye on the cables.

by:

I was under the impression these Clevis hooks with latch would hook to my truck (Silverado 3500 HD 2016). And found they are too small to fit I do know a 5/16 Clevis hooks with latch fit. I will pick up some 5/16 Clevis hooks with latch for the other end of the cables and use the smaller ones to hook to my trailer. (Small 5x8 in closed). Once I get the other Clevis hooks I will take a picture to attach. This is an upgrade from my rusted chains.

by:

Easy to feed through the tow bar.

by:

Very pleased with the quality of the safety cables. Asked a friend about these and he said that was an awesome price, so I quickly ordered them. A few minutes later I called and spoke with Christy B, very nice and helpful, she helped me add something else to the original order. Shipped out the same day, got it the very next day. Will definitely call her again.

by:

I ordered these safety chains to replace the originals on my 2 horse bumper pull horse trailer. They installed easily and look great. One of the best features was that the packaging was NOT the typical clamshell package that you have to cut around all 4 sides to get open. Rather, the package was held together securely by a staple that opened easily. While I hope I don't need these again soon I'd order them again.

by:

The product is an excellent replacement for my 12 year old safety cables on my boat trailer. They are heavy duty and are a direct replacement for the old ones. They arrived quicker than expected and were exactly as advertised.

by:

I was looking to replace my old un-coated cables as they began to fray. These were exactly what I needed, I just connected them to my trailer with "Blue Ox Quick Link For Safety Chains"

by:

I replaced the tow chains with tow cables and this turned out to be an excellent decision. Great product.

by:

etrailer.com is all you need to know for ordering trailer supplies. Ordering was user friendly and entire order arrived ahead of schedule even though we chose ground shipping. All parts came "as advertised" products. Way to go etrailer.com!

by:

Cables as described. Hooks are cast, with weaker keeper gates than my previous set which used S-shaped bent rod and extra heavy duty spring gates. Less than an equivalent replacement for me.

by:

Was completely satisfied with product, good quality, made in U.S.A, product description was great, and received 3 days early just in time for an important trailer event. Thank god there are still old school company's like this around, Long Island New York , thanks.

by:

Product was just as advertised and worked perfectly on my trailer. Shipment arrived in a few days using regular shipping. Have used etrailer.com before and never been disappointed.

by:

This is a good set of chains for a trailer. I like them, because I don't have to twist the chain to shorten it up for different trucks.

by:

Good quality. Coiled so they don’t drag on the ground. Cables enclosed in plastic.

by:

well made, fits on trailer hitch well . Just what I wanted.

by:

Very heavy duty cables. I like the way the coils are self stowing and drag proof.

by:

Hooks are too small for the weight rating.....don't fit a Chevy 3500 HD hitch.

by:

Came in a timely matter and in perfect shape. Our products were packed excellent and not damaged. They had everything we needed just a click away. We will Continue to do business here!!

by:

Great Item. Installation was easy and instruction manual was easy to understand. I just hope the hooks don't rust.
Totally satisfied with my purchase!

by:

Much better than original on my horse trailer! Ordering was easy too.

by:

Just a nice clean install, well worth the cost.

by:

Excellent products. Fast shipping and tracking. Superb customer service.
Very professional. I'll be back for future needs
Thanks!

  • How to Select the Proper Length Safety Chains for a Trailer
It really depends on your setup, if the safety chain loops on your tow vehicle are spaced far apart then you will need more slack to make a tight turn then if they were closer together. What I would recommend you do is connect your trailer to your tow vehicle, back your trailer up into a near jack-knife position and then use a rope to go from the safety chain attachment points of your trailer to your tow vehicle. Now measure the length of rope that was used and that would be the correct...

  • Do Dutton-Lainson Safety Cables Need to Be Crossed When Connected to Tow Vehicle
Yes, you will want to cross the 40" Vinyl Coated Safety Cables with Clevis Hook (Qty. 2) by Dutton-Lainson, 6,500 lbs. # DL20119 when you're installing them. The idea behind this is that they will cradle the trailer tongue if it becomes disconnected, which will result in a safer stopping situation if you're able to do so quick enough. Attached is a review video for you to check out.

  • Is Vinyl Coated Safety Cables # DL20119 Clevis or Eye Slip Hook
A hook can be classified as a slip hook or a grab hook and that is determined by the inside shape of the hook (there are other types as well, just ask any rigger or logger). A grab hook is made to lock in to a link on a chain and stay put. A slip hook is rounded and designed to allow a chain to "slip" through it. Clevis or Eye refers to the other end of the hook and is very specific. An Eye hook has a closed circle (like the one on this product). A Clevis hook has a clevis pin that can...

  • How To Measure For Correct Safety Chain Length For Trailer
To measure for safety chains you will want to have the trailer hooked up to your tow vehicle with it just about jack knifed as this is the furthest the safety chains will be stretched. You will measure from one side of the tongue where you will be attaching the safety chain to the opposite side of the tow vehicle chain loop. You want some slack so add a little bit of length to this measurement. Lastly you will need to know the weight of your loaded trailer and make sure the safety chains...

  • Recommended Safety Cables for Flat Towing with 2015 Ford F-350
The flat towing safety cables that I most often recommend are the 68-inch Roadmaster Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643. These are long enough to give you plenty of slack for making connections but their coiled design means they won't drag on the ground. Please click on the linked video for more information. When flat towing cables are preferred over chains as they will tend to interfere with the tow bar less and will be less likely to chip its paint, etc.

  • Do I Need Cable Extensions for Trailer Safety Chains on 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500
It does look like the 40" Vinyl Coated Safety Cables with Clevis Hook # DL20119 have an issue fitting the Silverado safety chain loops so I do recommend picking up the Cable Extensions # RM-910648-12 which you can loop through the safety chain connection points and then hook the safety chains to the extensions. • Recommended Safety Chain Extension For 5/16 Inch Chains
To extend your chains, I recommend the 40" Vinyl Coated Safety Cables with Clevis Hook (Qty. 2) by Dutton-Lainson, 6,500 lbs. # DL20119. They require 5/8 inch diameter bolts, flat washers and locknuts to mount. Another option is to use the 35" Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook, 5,400 lbs. # 1483-535-04 and can be installed using the same hardware listed above.

I have come across this issue before. What I recommended was to loop safety cables # RM-910648-12 through the hitch safety chain holes and hook the safety chains to the loops. The cables are rated for 8,000 pounds which is the highest for these short cables. There doesn't seem to be any hooks that will fit directly to the factory Class V hitch on your Chevy 3500.

The Dutton-Lainson 40" Vinyl Coated Safety Cables with Clevis Hook # DL20119 have a shipping weight of 3lbs whereas the closest comparable chain option # 337B03835SC is going to weigh approximately 5lbs per chain. If you're looking to cut weight then I recommend the coiled safety cables. • Determining the Correct Length for Safety Chains
There is no perfect calculation for safety chain length since it all depends on the setup you have. Safety chains should be crossed when attached, and also short enough to keep your coupler off of the ground should your trailer disconnect. They also need to have enough slack to allow for sharp turns. Since the greatest length will be from the safety chain attachment point to the connection on your vehicle during a sharp turn, this distance is what you need to measure. Attach your trailer...
