Hi, everyone, Aidan here with etrailer.com and today we're gonna be taking a look at this pair of Dutton-Lainson safety cables. So this is gonna come in a pack of two and these are gonna be 5/16ths cables with a vinyl coating on the outside. Now the vinyl coating's nice because it's actually going to keep noise down to a minimum. If you're worried about any sort of protection with your vehicle or your trailer here it's not gonna be as damaging as bare metal but it's also just gonna be quieter. These are kind of hitting against other metal surfaces. They're not really gonna make any noise back here so it's a nice little convenience feature.
These are going to be very tightly coiled, so when they're not engaged, they do stay up off the ground pretty well for our trailer here and just in general, when they're hooked up they're gonna stay elevated, and they're not gonna drag. You have a nice clevis hook on the end here so they'll snap onto the safety chain loops, and they won't accidentally come off on their own, so everything is nice and secure. Now fully extended, they can be up to 40 inches long so plenty long for our application here today. I think it should be plenty long for most other applications out there. They can be used with trailers up to 6,500 pounds.
So just keep that in mind with your towing setup that you get the right rated chains. Now it doesn't come with its own hardware. The way we have it set up today these pins just go through and it's all set but if you need to pick up your own hardware it will require 5/8ths bolts, washers, and lock nuts so just keep that in mind when you're picking these out but otherwise let's check out how we got 'em installed. To get started with our installation, we're gonna remove our old safety chain first. Now there's not really anything wrong with these ones but we wanted to show you the process.
For this trailer today, we're actually going to have a cotter pin on the end here so we'll just take some needle nose pliers. We can bend those ends back together here. It's a little hard for me to see over the edge here but we can get those bent back straight so we can pull it through and free up the chain. So once we've got that out, we can pull this pin out and then free up the safety chain on the other side too. Now we can take our new pair of safety chains or in this case, a cable, we're gonna slide this free end in the middle there and secure it with that pin.
Like we had it before on either side. And then repeat that process on both sides. Once both sides are connected, you can run them to the safety chain loops on our vehicle, hook them up. You can see that coiled tension holds 'em up really well. And then we're ready to hit the road and that'll complete our look at and installation of the Dutton-Lainson safety cables. worked out great, only issue is the little safety clips, i had to cut them down to make the hooks work on my 2020 Tundra hitch.

Purchased to replace the original safety chains on the trailer that started rusting after a couple years. These cables are probably more than I need, but so much better than the chains. Since they are coiled, they stay up out of the way and don’t drag on the ground.
Worked out better than I expected.
So far so good, I hooked them up to my camper and, I'm looking forward to not hearing the jingle of chains. Also my stock camper chains were too short for my Reese adjustable class V ball mount. You may want to figure out how to attach them before ordering. I simply used the hooks from my old chains as they have a removable pin, and shortened the chains so there is only one link between the chain and the hook that now clips into the eye on the cables.
I was under the impression these Clevis hooks with latch would hook to my truck (Silverado 3500 HD 2016). And found they are too small to fit I do know a 5/16 Clevis hooks with latch fit. I will pick up some 5/16 Clevis hooks with latch for the other end of the cables and use the smaller ones to hook to my trailer. (Small 5x8 in closed). Once I get the other Clevis hooks I will take a picture to attach. This is an upgrade from my rusted chains.

I ordered these safety chains to replace the originals on my 2 horse bumper pull horse trailer. They installed easily and look great. One of the best features was that the packaging was NOT the typical clamshell package that you have to cut around all 4 sides to get open. Rather, the package was held together securely by a staple that opened easily. While I hope I don't need these again soon I'd order them again.
The product is an excellent replacement for my 12 year old safety cables on my boat trailer. They are heavy duty and are a direct replacement for the old ones. They arrived quicker than expected and were exactly as advertised.

Cables as described. Hooks are cast, with weaker keeper gates than my previous set which used S-shaped bent rod and extra heavy duty spring gates. Less than an equivalent replacement for me.

This is a good set of chains for a trailer. I like them, because I don't have to twist the chain to shorten it up for different trucks.
