Finding the Correct Size Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter

After backing the vehicle under the trailer, measure from the top of the ball in the truck bed to the base of the pin box on the trailer. This will indicate the height of the adapter that you need.

Convert-a-Ball Collar

Secure Installation

The included collar slides over your fifth-wheel trailer's king pin and is held in place with set screws. Additional, larger set screws that are mounted at the top of the coupler adapter then tighten onto the collar. Because this adapter is designed with an offset, the top lip of the adapter must also be bolted to the base of the pin box to ensure proper positioning.

Convert-a-Ball Locking Feature

Positive-Locking Feature

This trailer coupler adapter features a simple, secure latching mechanism for safe, easy hookup with the hitch ball. The convenient extension handle grabs the sliding latch so that you can easily lock or unlock the coupler from outside the truck bed. Once the coupler is engaged, hook the handle through the hole in the sliding latch's track to ensure that it remains securely coupled. For extra safety, once the coupler is latched, you can replace the handle with a padlock (sold separately) to secure the trailer to the hitch ball during towing. Use a lock while your trailer is being stored to guard against towaway theft.

Offset Design

This coupler adapter is specially designed for use with truck beds that are between 6 feet and 8 feet in length. The offset allows your trailer to sit a bit farther back than it normally would so that you can make turns safely and with confidence. Supplying that extra space between your trailer and truck cab creates the clearance necessary for you to make tight turns without your trailer hitting your cab.

Pin Box Length

Note: There are no recommended limits to the length of pin box on which the Convert-A-Ball trailer coupler can be used.

I liked the idea of this hitch; adjustability, easy transfer truck-to-truck etc. However, I couldn't stop it from pivoting in the middle. On sharp turns, the safety chain would get caught on the hitch and bend the eyes in the bed and/or cause the hitch to pivot within itself. It did not pivot on the 5th wheel plate. I will go back to my Anderson and sell this one. I placed a small pic with arrow pointing to the pivot point. Thanks

I would like to reach out to the manufacturer about the issues that you are having with the adapter. I have a few questions that I need to ask before I do. This adapter is not recommended to be used with Reese Elite good neck hitches, with factory-installed towing prep packages which use a hitch ball with an integrated locking lever, sidewinder kingpins, or with any cushioned or air ride 5th wheel king pin. Do have any of these set ups? Would you be able to send a picture of where the safety chains become caught on the hitch?

by:

The overall design was great. I was not able to get enough clearance on my flatbed where the ball is down in the bed.

by:

This is my first 5th wheel but I have several other gooseneck trailers that I tow on a regular basis. I didn't want to have to switch back and forth so I bought this adapter. I have a long bed but I have a chase rack on it that goes up over the cab. I really didn't want to have to remove it every time I wanted to tow my new toy hauler so I got the offset hitch. Install was very straight forward. Took me about 40 min. to install. The hardest part was getting the bolts in as mine has the long pin box and it was all I could do to reach the holes. I don't have very many miles on it but it tows great. I didn't notice any difference from my other gooseneck trailers.

After a year in still very satisfied and glad I went this route.

I ordered a 5th wheel to gooseneck 7 1/2" offset adapter. I didn't receive it for 10 days due to weather delay. When I did receive it I've got 2 of the same item, The boxes were labeled incorrectly. Now I have to go through the problem of sending the extra one back and wait on the correct item to be delivered, I sure hope there are no weather delays, I need this SOON! Other than this issue I have always had good experiences with ordering through etrailer. I will also do a follow-up review when I receive the correct item.

It is very unfortunate that this has happened. I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to better assist you.

by:

I received this hitch about a year ago, it arrived with in a week of ordering it. The instructions were simple to understand. It did say it will take two person to install. I was able to install it by myself with in a few hours, What I like about this hitch is that I still have use of my truck bed when unhook when traveling and I don’t have a fifthwheel to haul around. My camper pulls great with this hitch with no complaintion at all. It’s a great hitch.

by:

Product itself is fantastic...however etrailer's rep misinformed me that it would work with our fifth wheel and when we got it, it did not. It was a very bad time too as we were moving into our fifth wheel and getting ready to move 2500 miles across the country. THANKFULLY the owner of Convertaball was willing to walk us through a fix, which worked. This was my first negative interaction with etrailer and the only time, so far, that I've been disappointed in them.

by:

I have ordered many items from etrailer they always arrive fast this gooseneck to 5th wheel adapter installed easy and did the trick for me built very strong. The staff at etrailet is always very helpful.

by:

The gooseneck adapter was as advertised. Showed up on time, but was missing two parts. I had to call 4 times to get it sent out. It took over 2 weeks to get it.

by:

The product came as ordered. Relatively easy to put together, took to a friend's shop to access his pneumatic tools. The instruction book was clearly written and the graphics were very useful. The trailer pulls smoothly.

by:

Owned a year now GREAT product.
Made
very well. Installed in 40 minutes in dealership parking lot. Trailer towed beautifully thanks to cushion in system.

by:

Well, it works, But thats all. I bought it as a quick fix for a stuck goose ball in the bed of my truck. I tow a 2018 Jayco Eagle 5th wheel and needed an option in a pinch. The geometry of this device created a lot of chucking and bucking while towing not to mention the extra leverage on the frame. I towed with it 3 times before finally managing to remove the goose ball, and installed a B&W Companion with OEM hitch points. Night and day difference. I would only recommend this adapter if you have no other choice.

by:

This hitch adapter is heavy duty. It's easy for two people to install in under an hour and all parts fit together well. The instructions were well written in English, which is the official language of our country (USA). The offset adapter works great with my 2011 Ram 2500 4x4 which sits higher due to oversized tires. My shipment was received two days after I ordered it without paying any expedited freight charges!
Thanks to the Convert-A-Ball and the fine folks at etrailer.com my days of listening to a clanging 5th wheel hitch are over. Thank you etrailer.

this product worked out great for me. I am able to turn almost a full 90* turn with this set up. I would just keep in mind if you have any type of Tunnel cover it is hard to line up other than that great product.

by:

CAVEAT EMPTOR! Don’t cheese out - get what you really need
Not appropriate for every application but the information provided does not make it clear

by:

Wow what a great product! Instructions were great and very easy to install. I did it by myself in under a half hour. Looks very strong and better than expected. Arrived in just a few days.

by:

I have a short bed so I assumed the offset was needed for cab clearance. The off set has a major design flaw. It needs to be drilled through and pinned or welded to prevent it from rotating while backing up. Trust me, we tightened the bolts to the point of denting the post and it still rotated while backing up allowing it to strike my bedside causing significant damage. The offset went in the trash and I used the large flanged adapter successfully after that with out the offset. I then discovered the late model 2018 trailer had plenty of room and cleared the shortbed cab with out the offset anyways! I was trying to fix a problem that didn't exist. Some days you can't win. lol..
Sorry, I can not recommend the offset with out pinning or welding it. But the straight Goose neck adapter works fine.

I reached out to the manufacturer about the rotation that you experienced. They advised that the front and rear adjustment bolts come partially pre-tightened however will need to be tightened to 110 foot pounds during installation. This can be overlooked or forgotten when the height adjustment is made.

by:

I was not explained about having to drill holes in my fith wheel hitch. This was difficult to do and when done it was not level, very difficult to take trailer off truck, had to use a jack. I had to redo and had to add spacers between fithwheel and gooseneck. This might have been better if I had not got the 7 inch offset, this tended to pull the bolts out of the fith wheel platform. I had to redo this hitch three times.

by:

Easy Hook Up - No 5th Wheel Saddle to remove when you want the bed of your truck back for other use, you simply flip your goose neck ball over - very stable on the road even in High Wind situations - with 8" offset it gives you extra turning radius with the Cab of the Truck - doesn't bind when you are backed into low or high spot, which happens with the King Pin of lower cost fifth wheel hitches - ininstallation instructions were very Good

by:

I bought this adaptor about a year ago and I have to say it has been worth every penny that I paid! I have an 8ft bed with a tool box in the back so having the offset worked great, giving me more ability to turn the trailer right where I needed it to get. Install was fairly simple but you'll want at least 1 more person to help since it weighs almost 90lbs. Have a torque wrench handy to. All in all I recommend this to anyone who has a gooseneck ball in the bed of their truck who wants to own a 5th wheel trailer!

by:

Heavy duty. Two man job to install. Needed longer bolts but manufacturer was very helpful. Tows great, totally satisfied with product and service. I tow a 33foot Carri- lite fifth wheel rv (14000 lbs) with a 2016 F350 4x4 super cab with an 8 foot bed.

Terrific product. Had to get longer safety chains. Trailer tows great. After sale service is great.

by:

Had a offset adapter w/o the cushion on my 28’ trailer. Towing w/ 2005 F250 powerstroke short bed. It would beat the crap out of you hauling it down the interstates in TX, LA, MS,OK. Put this on and wow what a difference it makes. Rides so much better. Wish I knew this existed long ago. Well worth the $$. Had a trailer service center install for me in MS. Has an opening by the latch that allows you to put a lock on the adapter to keep it secured when in storage.

by:

After installing the gooseneck, hooking it up to trailer, I was not impressed on the function of this gooseneck(recommended for short bed truck).

Towing my trailer was like pulling the entire railroad pacific behind me.. Lot of tugging jerking. When I arrived to my destination the gooseneck had dropped down in the front giving it a dropped and sideways location instead of the installed and aligned position... Gooseneck was rated for up to 14,000 pounds.. I was towing only 9,000.. My vehicle struggled even though it is a GMC 2500 with all the gear......

by:

Bought this to convert 5th wheel camper to gooseneck. Hardest part of the install is drilling and tapping the holes to attach to kingpin plate. But once finished and used for the first time, absolutely love it! Camper pulls much smoother than when it was 5th wheel

by:

I wish I would have installed this years ago. Took it on its 1st trip up the Northern Coast of California, pulled so nice, and when we got to the camp ground I had nothing in my bed.
I installed it by myself in about 2 hours, took it off and on about 4 times. It took me the longest to tap the threads 2 of the bolts I could get the nuts and lock washers on but 2 had to be threaded. I had drill bits and taps so that was a no cost, I would suggest that if you have to thread holes go buy good drill bits and a tap, do it right.
After it was completed and I did a test drive backed it into my side yard and I could not get the trailer off the ball, I thought it was stuck, it was not I just didn't notice how much the cushion travels I thought I was lifting the trailer to high.
Anyhow I love it and it was reasonably priced.

by:

worked excelent for the year that i owned this trailer. sinse have sold the whole traler and this hitch and was a definite point of sale to the new buyer. thanks

  • 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter Recommendation With Offset
I recommend going with the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter w/ Offset # CAB-C5GX1216. This bolts on around the king pin on your pin box and then connects to the gooseneck hitch ball on your truck. There is a 7-1/2" offset and the height is adjustable from 12" - 16" so you can get the right height adjustment for your towing application.

  • Best Adapter to Use to Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer with a Gooseneck Trailer Hitch
The issue is that when using a 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter like # CAB-C5GX1216 the distance from the trailer to the connection point (ball) in the truck is greater than it would normally be with a 5th wheel trailer hitch. I found an online copy of the owners manual for the 2012 Dodge Ram 1500. According to the manual with the 4.7 liter engine, and 2-wheel drive the maximum gross trailer weight can be 7,600 pounds. The payload (the amount of weight the truck bed can hold) is 1,700 pounds. That means that any 5th wheel trailer would have to weigh 7,600 pounds or less when loaded and ready to tow and have a pin weight of no more than 1,700 pounds.

I spoke with my contact at Convert-A-Ball and he informed me that you would totally be fine using the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter w/ Offset # CAB-C5GX1216 on your trailer with a cushioned Mor/Ryde pin box. The two sets of cushions will work together to provide you with a very smooth ride.
