Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter

This unique coupler lets you tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your gooseneck hitch. It is air ride equipped to ensure that less stress is put on your trailer's frame than is typical with traditional king pin adapters. Simply replace your trailer's existing pin box with the Goose Box and you'll be ready to go.

Eliminate Chucking and Jarring

The Goose Box is designed to absorb road shock for a smooth, stable ride. The internal air bag can be adjusted to give you just the right amount of support, so you will lose the bounce but avoid the stiff, rigid ride that occurs when towing with an overinflated air bag. Also included in the Goose Box are dual shock absorbers, which extend the life of the air bag by ensuring that compression occurs in a controlled fashion.

Cutaway Diagram of Reese Products Goose Box
  1. The air bag can be adjusted to provide a smooth ride for both your truck and trailer. Because it is fully enclosed, it's protected from UV exposure and shielded from road hazards.
  2. Dual shock absorbers help to reduce bounce and relieve stress on your trailer frame.
  3. The integrated pivot tube allows the Goose Box to move fore and aft, minimizing chucking.
  4. The gooseneck coupler attaches to the 2-5/16 inch ball on your gooseneck trailer hitch.

Installation was a breeze. I have not towed with it yet, but am sure it will perform as expected.

Hitch is great. Delivery went well. My only issue is I was able to find it for roughly $xxx cheaper on [online]. When I reached out to customer support to let them know, they told me it was too late to cancel the order and if I’d like, I can return it for a $xxxx shipping fee…

I have completed the installation of the Reese Gooseneck pin Box 20K on my 2019 Columbus 1492 366RL. The installation went well for 2 people. The installation was done as suggested in the instructions, one step below the original fifth wheel hitch.
That actually proved to be too high for my 2019 GMC DenaliHD 4x4 DRW so I moved the hitch to the same position as the original equipment and the height works much better. I was able to unbolt and reset the position of the hitch by myself using the truck bed as a "work bench" and raising and lowering the RV to align the holes. Haven't towed it yet but will soon and provide more info. As you can tell by the photos, the safety chain installation was very easy.

Very heavy duty, probably should have got the 16k. Installed on 43’ 2022 Salem Hemisphere 356QB at the dealership. Never moved the trailer with 5th wheel hitch so not sure how that would have compared. The guys at the RV dealership were really impressed with this hitch and now recommend this to anyone wanting to switch to goose neck hitch. Air ride is AMAZING! absorbs every bump without transferring to toe vehicle. You can see the trailer and hitch moving but don’t feel it. Extremely happy I purchased this rather than the 5th wheel setup for factory towing prep. I think this is well worth the couple hundred extra and not have to deal with that in the bed.

Not As Advertised and Horrible Customer Service at Reese!
The pinbox came without installation hardware or directions. The hardware took a month to replace and again came without directions.
The pinbox DOES NOT have the air valve as pictured. When I called Reese I was told it was due to a parts shortage and the person I spoke to told (Paul) me the new set-up was a dumb design.
I TOTALLY AGEE!!
To inflate one person has to literally crawl under the pinbox while hitched to inflate while another watches the bar. Not easy for a 60+ year old fat man!
The valve faces OPPOSITE the bar side. Just dumb.
When etrailer followed up they were basically told I have to live with it.
NO - NOT HAPPY!

THIS IS THE THIRD FIFTH WHEEL HITCH THAT I HAVE HAD SINCE 2016. IT IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST HITCH I HAVE HAD AND SEE NO OTHER REASONS TO MAKE ANY FURTHER HITCH CHANGES IN THE FUTURE. THE REASON I GAVE IT 4 STARS IS BECAUSE OF THE LIST OF IMPROVEMENTS THAT I HAVE LISTED BELOW. I HAVE HAD THE HITCH FOR 1 YEAR AND HAVE PUT APPROXIMATELY 10,000 MILES ON IT.

WHAT I LIKE:
-IMPROVED THE TOWING EXPERIENCE IN TERMS OF RIDE COMFORT WHEN
TOWING
-UPON DISCONNECTING FROM THE CAMPER, THE ONLY THING LEFT IN
THE BED OF THE TRUCK IS THE GOOSE BALL.
-REDUCED CHUCKING. IT ELIMINATES ABOUT 90%

WHAT NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED:
-THE COUPLER ON THE KING PIN NEEDS TO HAVE A FUNNEL (similar
to the Anderson hitch) THIS PROVIDES A MARGIN OF ERROR WHEN
RECONNECTING THE TRUCK TO CAMPER. WITH THE CURRENT COUPLER,
YOU HAVE TO BE DEAD ON WHEN RECONNECTING. A CHEAP ACCESSORY
TO HELP IN THE ALIGNMENT OF KING PIN TO THE GOOSE BALL ARE
TELESCOPING TENNIS BALLS.
-EASIER ACCESS TO PUTTING AIR IN THE AIR BLADDER. IF I KNOW
THAT I NEED TO PUT AIR IN THE BLADDER, I WILL DO IT WHILE THE
CAMPER IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRUCK. I FOUND IT EASIER TO
LET AIR OUT THEN TO PUT AIR IN WHEN THE KING PIN IS CONNECTED
TO THE GOOSE BALL

THERE ARE SOME GOOD VIDEOS ON THE INTERNET THAT HAVE GOOD TIPS AND TRICKS THAT MAKE USING THE REESE GOOSE NECK EASIER. THIS IS ONE OF THE BETTER ONES.

This Goosebox is heavy but I was able to get it installed by myself with help from my wife while tightening the bolt. When UPS freight delivered this, the driver was kind enough to load it directly into my truck so I did not have to lift it up. Using my truck I was able to back it into position where it went in effortlessly. I first took the zirk fitting out so I did not break it. The Goosebox was shored up using 2X4 pieces and then strapped in place, so it was in position while backing it up to the fifth wheel. This is a well made and stout pinbox replacement. The one issue I do have is that the air inflation gauge is very hard to see. Basically it is a black bar inside a black hole. The next time I am hooked up, I intend to put some white or other bright colored paint on the bar for easier viewing. No more lifting the heavy hitch to of the bed to use the truck. As always etrailer is hard to beat, fast shipping, expert advice, great prices.

Overall a great upgrade, but not perfect.
Happy to have gone this way from the previous 5th wheel hitch setup.

Pros:
* Having nothing in the bed of the truck, except when towing.
* There is more room for a larger bed chest without the 5th wheel hitch (replaced a B&W Companion slider).
* Air bag system seems less jarring on the frame of the 5th wheel than the B& W Companion / Lippert Rotaflex.
* Seems to have reduced further what little "chucking" there was with the Companion/Rota-Flex setup.

Cons:
* Lining up to hitch is a PITA. Reese should really rethink this.
* Towing is not as confidence inspiring. The trailer feels like it wallows in rough undulating turns in comparison to the 5th wheel connection.
* Sits much lower than the 5th wheel pin box, so at level RV sites the bottom of the hitch is lower than the truck bed. That affects the length of RV site needed as the truck can't back under the trailer to park.
* The pinbox structure requires more room in the bed, limiting what can be placed on the sides & rear of the bed.

To help with hitching, I'm going to make a magnetic "sighting" system that can be seen through the rear window. something that can be tossed in the bed chest when not in use. Currently I'm using the bed camera (in the CHMSL) along with a camera that I set on the wheel well, and that is marginal at best. It still takes multiple attempts because of the limited tolerance. Once the bed chest is installed the camera will be pretty ineffective.

My camper is 4 yrs old. I was using a gooseneck offset adapter to hitch fifth wheel to truck B&W gooseneck hitch. I upgraded to the Reese 16k Goosebox with a recommendation from a friend. I am absolutely impressed by how this hitch tows. No more chucking, the airbag and shocks add a much needed level of comfort. My camper is a Starcrart AR-One Maxx 26BHS. I’m towing with a 2005 Ram 3500 4x4 CCSB. I am using the B&W offset hitch ball to create more space between the truck cab and camper bulkhead. Highly recommend this hitch to anyone looking to tow their 5’er with a gooseneck ball hitch.

Goosebox works great! We have a bradford built flatbed with a recessed ball. The truck is used for work when not pulling the fifthwheel so I didn't want to cut out the trap door cover to use an anderson. The goosebox makes the fifthwheel no different then hooking up a regular gooseneck trailer but gives a much smoother ride

by:

Must have if you want to use a goose ball for towing your trailer. Completely eliminates the chunking and hard bouncing on roads- smooths outs bridge crossings and keeps your Lippert warranty!

by:

IF you have a gooseneck ball and a fifth wheel RV, then this is the perfect match for your rig! The Reese Goosebox changes everything! Easier hook up and unhooking. Smooth ride and easy installation. etrailer has plenty of videos for review and installation, plus you can call them and ask about it if you have any questions. I have had it for a year now and just installed it on its second camper and I would have it any other way! It is exactly what you need!

by:

I like the Goosebox was easy to install. Took me and wife about 2 hours but I am in my mid 70’s. I used my tractor and loader which took a lot of work out of it.

by:

Installed very easily on my Grand Design 31MB, Towing with a 2019 F350 short box and have about 7" of bed rail clearance once the box is aired up. Using the B&W 4" offset, can get close to 75-80 degree turns

Hardest part was tracking down a 220lb torque wrench to get all the bolts secure.

by:

After dealing with the awkward 5th wheel hitch and pin box for many years on several RV's, I decided to try the Goose Box. Absolutely the very best mod I've done on my 2019 Alpine 5th wheel.

I had changed from a 2500 to a 3500 DRW that happened to include the GM puck system.

I was left with a choice: do I spend hundreds on a puck adapter system to allow my old industry standard rail fifth wheel hitch to work with my new truck? Or do I sell it for as much as I can, and change over to something like the Goosebox?

In the end, I was able to sell my old fifth wheel hitch and purchase this Goosebox, and the difference cost about as much as the adapter would have cost. Furthermore, the bed of my truck is now eternally empty and usable without needing to climb in and disassemble a heavy hitch, and I even lost a bit of weight in the bed.

Yes, the Goosebox is heavy, but it is certainly not heavIER than a normal pinbox plus the weight of my old hitch. If my guess is right, I probably lost 50-100 lbs.

To add to that, once the bag is inflated, the ride is so smooth. It's easily one of the best upgrades I did to my truck and trailer setup.

Yes, hooking up is SLIGHTLY more complex than a traditional fifth wheel, but the time difference is minutes at most. Less, once you get used to it, or you have a good spotter to help.

I kept the old pin box around, because I will want to keep this setup if I ever change trailers!

by:

I finally reached the point where I could no longer remove my standard fifth wheel hitch by myself. My only option was to leave my hitch in the bed of my truck for the entire travel season, April to October for us. Not a good thing when I needed my full bed. After hours of research the Goose Box seemed to be my best option. I had put the Box on our previous fifth wheel but didn't tow it much before we traded it for a 2020 Jayco Pinnacle. I had the dealer change the Box over to the new Jayco. It is by far the best towing, best riding and best handling fifth wheel/truck combo we have ever owned, and that has been a few. Our 2020 F350 has the camera system which makes hookup relatively painless. The 5 pound ball is so much easier to remove than a 200 pound hitch. Well worth the money and highly recommend it.

Ordered this to replace OEM king pin on my 2019 Solitude 375RES. Due to it being delivered via freight it took a little longer than expected, had to make an appointment to have it delivered, not to big of a deal. The cardboard this comes in is very hefty, as it should be for the weight of the item. As stated by other, there was not any instructions included, easy to find online though. I am not the mechanical type but a little handy with basic tools and it took me about 2.5 hours, this includes taking the old pin box off. Watched a few videos on how people used wood blocks and used the tailgate of the truck to install. I was worried about braking the zerk fitting off so I attached the couple to my goose ball. I than used blocks of wood to shore it up and used the truck and the fifth wheel to line it up. Hooking up is easy. On my test drive I can tell this will handle better, did not have as much chucking as with the fifth wheel hitch. Looking forward to our next camping trip to give it a true test.

As described

by:

After one year of use the Goosebox has been a joy to pull with. Initial hookup is a learning curve compared to a traditional 5th wheel hitch but simple and quick after a few trips. Found a bed mounted camera eases the hookup process and
love the open space of our truck bed when unhooked!

by:

This thing is great! Install was a breeze took about 2 hours to install taking my time and torque. All I did was sat the pin box up on cardboard and wooden blocks, then slid the pin box under the king pin when it was close enough. A buddy and I installed it.

Towing is very smooth and nice and easy. No bucking.

Everything is great with this gooseneck pin box. I'm extremely happy and I'm even at the camp site right now reviewing this! Thanks etrailer.

Received in good order.
Easy to install,
you do need two people to install . Heavy.
one problem, the grease fitting was not installed properly . it came with an insert grease fitting. the whole was a threaded hole . I bought a Grease fitting and screwed it in. Before fixing it I called etrailer and told them about the grease fitting. they said it was a defective unit and they would ship me a new one. problem was I had already installed this one. I was not going to uninstall and reinstall another unit just for a grease fitting. this is why I purchased my own fitting and installed it.
