Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bar 7-Wire to 6-Wire Coiled-to-Straight Cord Installation - 2018 Jeep Cherokee

-Today, in our 2018 Jeep Cherokee, we're gonna take a look at the Roadmaster 7-wire to 6-wire coiled to straight cord for Roadmaster tow bars.Whenever you're flat-towing your vehicle, you need to have the lights transfer from your motorhome to your towed vehicle. Now, we need to get a way to transfer all those signals. Possibly a power source going to charge our battery.Well, that's where our Roadmaster cable's gonna take care all of those problems for us. Now, this is gonna be specifically made for a replacement for Roadmaster tow bars. However, it is gonna work with any tow bar and any towed vehicle. It's gonna be a hybrid style cable, which means we're gonna have a coiled sections that's gonna be close to the motorhome and then it'll turn into a a straight cable that'll go all the way until we plug it into our towed vehicle. The straight end of the cable's gonna be great for tow bars that have that channel guide in them so we can keep everything looking nice and keep all that extra slack from dragging on the ground. Now, our cable's gonna have a silicone injected 7-way on the motorhome side, that way we can prevent any kind of corrosion from building up inside that plug. Now, on the other end, on the towed vehicle side, we're gonna have a 6-way connector.

Now this connector is not gonna be on there when it comes in the package. It is just gonna have the connector and a blunt cut wires on the end. That way we can match up our towed vehicle wiring to our motorhome and make sure everything is right. Now, since some of the cable is gonna be exposed to the elements, they put this vinyl coating on there, which is gonna be resistant to water, oil, and most chemicals that we find on the road. It is gonna last us a long time. Now even if you have some extensions, like we have this high-low adapter, which is gonna push everything back farther away from the motorhome, we're still gonna have plenty of cable to get everything hooked up because when it's extended all the way out it's gonna be a full eight feel long.If you're looking for a replacement cable for your Roadmaster tow bar, or if you're setting up a new flat tow, this is gonna be a great choice. Now, keep in mind that it's only gonna be one component you need for a complete, safe, flat tow set up. For a complete set up, you're gonna need a base plate, a tow bar, tow bar wiring, a braking system, and finally, safety cables. To begin our installation we're gonna grab our cord and whatever tow bar we're gonna be using it with.

In our case, we're gonna be using this Roadmaster All Terrain tow bar, which has these channels in the side here. We'll start by taking the straight end, that has our blunt cut wires coming through, and before we attach the connector to it, I'm gonna pass it through the channel here. Going towards the vehicle side of the tow bar. We'll pass it through till we have plenty of wire to work with outside on the end here.We can grab the vehicle socket end now. At the very end we're gonna have this super small Philips head screw. We're gonna want to pull that out and you want to be careful 'cause these are extremely easy to lose so we'll hold onto that.

Then if we come onto the other end, we'll have a larger Philips head screw. If we look into the end of it, you'll see it's almost like a little gate. You're gonna loosen that up, we don't need to take the screw out, we just want to loosen it up so that gate won't be in the way. Then see, if we loosen it up, we can move the gate out of the way. We can take our screwdriver, I'm gonna reach in and just push the plug out, just like that.Take the blunt cut wires, we'll them through.

We're just gonna make sure we have enough room to work with on the other end. If you look extremely close, each one of the pins are gonna be labeled. It's gonna have a small set screw and we can just loosen up the set screw, we can insert our wire to the corresponding connection, and we'll just tighten it up.Now I do want to mention, there is two industry standards as far as the power wire for a 6-way. The center pin is gonna be our auxiliary 12-volt power source. That's the way the 7-way, on the other end, is hooked up and most likely that's how your charge line is hooked up on the vehicle side. We're gonna go through and put all of our wires in place. Then we'll show you what it looks like.Once you have all your connections made, and your sure that all the wires are nice and secure, all the set screws are tight, we'll take the silver piece. We'll line everything back up. We'll slide it back into position. When you put it back on you just want to make sure that set screw lines up with the hole again. Once we have it lined up, take our small screw, and we can replace it. Then on the back here, where that gate is, we're gonna go ahead and tighten up that Philips screw, just so that gate comes down. That'll prevent the wire from being pulled on the inside and disconnecting those terminals. You don't need to really tighten it too hard, you just want that gate to make contact and prevent it from slipping inside of their. At this point, if you're putting safety cables in your guides, go ahead and do that now or we can move outside and hook up our Jeep to our motorhome. That'll finish up your look at the 7-wire to 6-wire coiled to straight cord for Roadmaster tow bars on our 2018 Jeep Cherokee-.

Order received on time and at a reasonable price.

Substitute for unavailable Item # RM-146-7. This product has NO 6-wire to 7-wire connector between vehicles and NO metal connector to the tow bar. Included wiring diagram shows connections to additional purchase 6-wire towed vehicle socket. Good length. Metal connector to tow bar will need to be purchased or made from scrap metal.

The six way connector that is included is separate so that you can match the wiring on your towed vehicle or trailer. It spends on the two bar, as some tow bars have a channel guard that the cord can fit through.

by:

Very difficult to wire and without soldering does not stay attached. I would suggest that you get one that is already wired for what you need on both ends.

That is a bummer that it was difficult to install. We do have options for a pre wired 7 to 6 round connector like part # DM9523054. It will extend 7 feet however is coiled so it will not drag on the ground.

by:

So 3 stars! Why? The small phillips head screw that needs to be removed in order to expose the socket that needs to be wired was in so tight that I stripped it trying to remove it. That had to be s a fluke. I complained to etrailer and they sent me a replacement 6-Pole, Round Pin connector. I wholeheartedly give etrailer 5 stars for customer service. They are awesome!
