Video Transcript for Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - BD028499 Review

Today we're going to take a quick look at the Bulldog collar lock coupler with low-profile latch, part number BD028499. Bulldog covers this coupler with a limited 5 year warranty that has a gross trailer weight capacity of 12,500 pounds. It's designed to work with standard 50 degree A frame trailers and it's a well done application so you'll just weld along the edges of the coupler to secure it to your trailer's frame. It has the cut out assembly for a jack where there's the main hole for the body of the jack and three bolt holes spaced apart according to industry standards for mounting the jack to the coupler. Now we're going to go over the coupler's mechanism. There's a collar that has to slide back and this hinged jaw will then be able to open up.

There's a pin in place that stops the collar from moving back accidently. So, we'll remove the pin and then we can operate the jack. We'll grab this lever and pull it, the collar slides back and the jaw pops open. Now, there's a shoulder here on our jaw that holds the collar back so it doesn't close while you're trying to hookup or unhook your trailer. To close the jaw, we can either just hit it closed or push it down while holding the latch and slowly let the collar over it.

We've got a 2-5/16 ball with us so we can show you how it works with an actual ball. The coupler is closed, so we'll grab our latch and open it up and the hinged jaw pops open, fit our ball into place and the coupler closes. Now our ball is secure, but it allows enough movement for it to track behind our tow vehicle. Now we'll just push our latch down and open our collar and the ball comes free. Again, we'll hold the collar back, push the jaw down and we can let the collar slide forward.

Lastly, we'll go over one measurement and that's the overall length of the coupler. It measures about 16-1/2 inches. That's it for a quick look at the Bulldog collar lock coupler with low-profile latch, part number BD028499. .

Works great. Welded it on and was ready to go. Have ordered from etrailer before, and just like every time before my parts arrived very promptly and have never had any complaints with service. Will definitely be using etrailer again.

by:

Extremely happy with my purchase. It took awhile to receive but not do to e trailer but to a manufacturer back order. I was kept up to date on the status of my order and even offered a similar substitute that was available to ship immediately but I choose to wait for what I had ordered. Nothing but great things to say about the product and the staff at E trailer

by:

like the collar lock coupling, very heavy duty.

by:

Best coupler ever - well worth the slightly higher cost.
Very easy to operate and slightly more tolerant of misalignment with the ball when hitching up. I keep a plastic deadblow hammer handy to operate it.
Way more secure attachment then the cheap Mau coupler that came with trailer which came uncoupled by itself.

by:

This is exactly what I was looking for. This is a very good heavy coupler. It is replacing a 5K surge brake toledo bulldog coupler on a trailer I have beefed up with 600# of steel to the 10K level.
To save $$$ and maintenance issues I am going to electric brakes after I decide on current axles or not.
Very speedy shipping: I did not expect to see it untill 16 July 12.
I have ordered from you several times and you have always exceeded my service expectations and your prices are very competitive.

by:

I love the bulldog-collar-lok coupler. I used it to replace a broken coupler that never quite worked right. The collar lock coupler is much easier to take on and off the ball. Locking is simple, effective and easily verified for safety. Installation was easy. Pull off the old coupler assembley (torch or plasma cutter works great). clean up the work surface removing old welds. Weld it onto the frame, ensuring the frame is evenly touching on all sides and bottom. touching. Final step...go back to hunting !!

by:

I'm a fan of Bulldog hitches. This product needs a little fine tuning on arrival. Very difficult to get the retaining pin in or out, I'll need to polish up the holes a bit. Once broken in I'm sure it will be just as functional and dependable as all the other Bulldog hitches on the road.

by:

I purchased a Bulldog coupler to replace a damaged one. Recieved product with rust plumes under paint. Had to bend sliding handle on lock to make it work. Not enough hassle to return- its just a hitch.

by:

Appears to be a refurbished unit, has several rust spots. Collar does not align very well with the shank of the coupler clam. Retaining pin holes a tad small.
Needs some lubricant for the collar, retaining pin holes reamed out a little, and a hammer to help open the collar.
All that said, I did get it delivered to my door at a price that was agreeable and better than everyone else. It also arrived about 4 days earlier than expected. Hope my welder does not have plans Saturday.
I have bought from etrailer before and will continue to do so. They have a good selection of products and good prices. Service is always fast and courtesy and they followup with you unlike most suppliers.

by:

I WAS REALLY PLEASED WITH THE PRICE AND THE PROMPT SHIPPING.
I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED BULL DOG AND I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE QUALITY OF THE HITCH.

by:

Easy to use website, great prices, super fast shipping, products packages professionally so the boxed were not destroyed in shipping. Extra care taken in every way. Then following up after delivery to insure I was a happy customer. Hats off to a great company. Etrailer has my business from now on.

by:

Ordering the coupler was extremely easy and etrailer com responded acknowledging my order and shipped it asap. I think the organization and professionalism exhibited by etrailer.com is outstanding!

by:

This product was purchased to replace an existing hitch that could only use a cheap hitch cover lock. After already having one trailer stolen this year security has become a priority. With this coupler we can use a heavy duty lock that covers the entire coupler and making it much more difficult to steal. Bulldog products always work for us.

by:

The hitch and jack I bought arrived quickly. They were both at at very great price, plus the free shipping made it a very good purchase. I have another trailer to build and I will be back for more parts.

by:

This is the second time ordering from ETRAILER.COM. The transaction has gone very smooth. Both times my orders were correct. Great prices too. As far as delivery, it made it to me before the time frame said it would. Great company. Will do business with them again

by:

The hitch is the exact same hitch as my local farm store but it was nearly $40 (30% discount ) cheaper. It took 3 business days to get here, but I was in no hurry. It was worth the wait.

by:

I needed a new coupler for a custom trailer I built. I love this style of coupler on my bumper pulls. Etrailer was great, product was easy to find and great price. Product shipped fast and easier than running to local store to pay more and not find what you need.

by:

Best trailer tongue made! Great price and fast shipping..Very satified with etrailer!

by:

What's not to like? Bulldog builds stout products, and etrailer got it here quickly.

by:

Exactly what I needed to fix my horse trailer. Arrive on time. Awesome.

by:

Work great

Unexpected fast delivery. I thought it would take a few days, which is reasonable. It came the next day. Thanks so much. Excellent product.

by:

Products was as described and delivered ahead of schedule. I’ll put these guys in my “preferred” vendor list for sure.

by:

Best product and price. Fast shipping, too. Great people to work with!

  • Recommended Lock for Demco DM14040-81 Coupler
The # BLTL-23 Blaylock coupler lock is compatible with a very specific type of coupler, the CollarLok like our part # BD028499, so it wouldn't be a good fit for a coupler like the Demco # DM14040-81. A lock like the # FA86-0015-316 or a latch type lock such as # 2847DAT would be your best fits.

  • Recommended Lock for Bulldog BD028499 Collar-Lok Trailer Coupler
The Bulldog # BD028499 Collar-Lok coupler is about 2-3/4 inches wide at the point of the coupler where the locking pin is located, so the # e98887 lock you'd looked at wouldn't have a long enough span to work for you. I'd recommend the same lock with a longer span, part # e98888 which would fit just fine. For a more secure lock that's specifically designed to work with a coupler like this, I'd go with the Blalock # BLTL-20-40D which would be harder to defeat and would provide a higher...

  • Compatibility of etrailer Coupler Lock on a 2-5/16 Inch Bulldog Coupler
Good news, I can help you figure out if this coupler lock will fit your Bulldog coupler. As long as your pin diameter on the Bulldog coupler is larger than a 1/4 inch and the span is no bigger than 3-3/8 inches, then this coupler lock will work for you. I pulled the Bulldog coupler # BD028287 you had looked at from our warehouse and a similar style 2-5/16 inch # BD028499 and measured the size of the lock pin that goes in the coupler. It measured 5/16 inch diameter and a length of 2-3/4...

Between the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ High-Profile Latch # BD028463 and the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ Low-Profile Latch # BD028499 the high-profile latch will be easier to use. • Recommended A-Frame Coupler for Flatbed/Car Hauler Trailer
The Yoke style or Collar-Lok style couples are definitely the best to use when it comes to loading heavy weight in a trailer, like a car. I recommend looking into the weight of your trailer and the vehicle you plan on hauling before deciding on a coupler. The A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5210-B is a great option that is rated for up to 8,000 lbs but if you are needing something rated even higher than that the Bulldog Collar-Lok # BD028463 or # BD028499 is the better route to go as they...

You are going to need to replace the entire Bulldog coupler that you have on your trailer. We do not sell replacement parts for the Collar Lok couplers. I looked up pictures of the 2001 Thuro Bilt trailer you said you have and they have an a-frame with an interesting angle, but the part # BD028499 does seem to be mounted on top of it so this would work. Then for a jack a top wind jack like the Pro Series part # PS1400600303 would work well as that's also what's used in all of the pictures I saw. • Does the 12.5K Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler have a Tongue Weight Rating
Believe it or not but you almost never see tongue weight ratings on trailer couplers. But the best thing to do is stay at 10 to 15 percent of the gross weight capacity. Bulldog coupler # BD028499 is rated for 12,500 pounds gross trailer weight but doesn't have a listed tongue weight capacity. So at 10 to 15 percent that would be 1,250 pounds to 1,875 pounds. But you would still be limited to the tongue weight rating specified by the trailer manufacturer (if applicable). I have linked a...

A collar lock coupler like the Bulldog # BD028499 is going to be generally easier to operate and less likely to have latching difficulties because of the larger moving parts.
