Michael: Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a quick look at the Bulldog Collar Lock Coupler with high profile latch. This is a heavy duty coupler, that's going to be ideal for your utility, livestock, cargo, or construction trailers. It does have a weld on 50 degree A frame connection there, so if you've got a 50 degree A frame trailer, this is going to work great for you, you just welded in place and it will give you that connection so that you can pull it.It does have a 15,000 pound weight capacity. So it should do a good job for you pulling those trailers. It has a hinge socket, the ball socket here.
So when we pull back on our collar lock lever, it's going to pop out, make it easy to get connected to that 2-5/16 inch hitch ball. Then when we're ready to reconnect, we just push that in, pull the collar back, pull the latch back, which will release the collar forward. That will lock it in place. So we're going to have a continuously tight fit, which is going to make sure that we're not coming loose. We're also going to have that visual indication to know that everything is lined up properly, it's all in place.So that's the nice part of that collar lock, just automatically pulls back to release and then closes when everything is connected.
Our high profile latch is going to be very easy to manipulate, even if we've got thick work gloves, just simply pull up on that, and then back. It does have a 1/4 inch hole right here. So they've included a pin, but if you want, you could substitute like a padlock or something to make sure you have extra security for your trailer.This whole thing is a high strength, steel construction. So it's going to be very durable, should hold up well to the use and abuse that your trailer receives. We do have a built in jack attachment here.
This whole opening is right at 2-1/2 of an inch in diameter. So it's going to be a great place to mount your round 2-1/2 inch utility jack. Our overall length as you can see it kind of tapers back here and expands down. But if I measure from the front piece to the back here at the top, it's right about 16-3/4 of an inch. If I we're to measure from the front to this bottom edge here, I'd call that closer to about 18-3/4 of an inch.So it's going to be a nice option if you are needing a coupler for your A frame trailer.
This does come with a five year limited warranty from Bulldog. So if you're in the market for a trailer coupler, I think this is going to do a good job for you. That spring loaded latch, I think is a nice option to make it easier, give you a little bit wider ball opening so that it's easier to get hooked up to your ball when you're connecting. Five star service from etrailer, and maybe a two or three-star product from Bulldog. Aside from the rust and the fact that the collar is so stiff that it can't be operated by hand, the fabrication on the steel attachment plate is poor. The holes for the tongue jack are punched out, twice in some cases, resulting in an enlarged hole, but there are no threads for the tongue jack so you'll have to fumble around and use nuts underneath. The vertical angles on the steel are wrong, so it will splay out at the bottom and won't fit tightly to the A-frame and you will need to shim it out. The interior of the casting is full of weld spatter that will chafe the tow ball. I bought the less-expensive Ram sleeve-lock coupler under a Curt label and the fabrication is much better, having none of the problems the BullDog did. etrailer kindly sent me an RMA to return the BullDog.

The best coupler we have used for our construction business. I have been using these for 14 years now without any problems. We replace them every 5 years at about 160,000 miles when we purchase new trailers. I currently need three now but they have been out of stock for several months. Still waiting for new stock to arrive so I can order. I feel safe with this type coupler and my employees also like the security it provides.

Don’t buy this!!! It literally does not work. You can’t open the coupling because it was built incorrectly. There isn’t enough room to slide the coupling back. Of course I didn’t realize this until I had mounted it on my trailer. etrailer customer service is about to get an earful!

The Bulldog coupler is SO MUCH easier to hitch up and disengage than my previous coupler which required several back and forth movements of my tow vehicle to engage/disengage the hitch ball.

Heavy duty, clean - no bulk to deal with and can step on the tongue easily to climb up, etc. Perfect for up to 7K# trailer. When it is latched, it is latched and in the truck and away you go! Great Bulldog product.

Really fast shipping, install only took 15 min, and much more solid than the original coupler on the trailer that used two long bolts (which wore and caused the holes to get oblong making the connection to the trailer sloppy), as compared to the four bolts provided with the new coupler.

I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty CRD. The spare tyre of the Liberty means the standard tow hitch is on a long bar to clear the spare tyre. I wanted a low profile coupling so I could bring the hitch point in closer to the rear axle to improve the towing characteristics with a 5000 lb trailer. One photo shows my old set-up and the other with the Bulldog. This coupling was ideal.

LOVE this Bulldog hitch! I welded it to my new custom built motorcycle trailer and I will never go back to the other kind again. So much easier to get a positive connection. I also like the integrated lock hole in the latch. It's definitely worth the money.

I bought this old really cheap to rebuild. One of the parts that had to be replaced was the hitch, I towed it home with my fingers crossed. I googled trailer hitch, trailer and etrailer was one of the sites that was suggested. I had to find a hitch that fit the 3 1/2" pipe that was the tongue, voila there it was to my amazement. I ordered it right then, 4 days later it was delivered yesterday. Today I mounted it, it was an easy installation and I am really pleased with the hitch and install. My fears of losing a trailer are now history, tomorrow it gets tested with 1 1/2 yards of gravel for the slab for my new. shop

Very good quality coupler HOWEVER I wish you would ship with fedex or ups. Usps tracking is horrible and there is a good likely hood your package will be delayed.

I changed out the conventional ball hitch on a dump trailer to a bulldog style hitch. There were issues ensuring the original hitch was on the ball correctly. The Bulldog hitch will eliminate that potential problem. Installation was easy. Took about 10 minutes to get the old hitch off and the new one on. The only improvement that I would suggest is to have the lever to retract the collar as the lighter Bulldog hitches do. This one simply has a sliding collar that must be forced back by hand. I always use my foot on the hitches with the lever. But this is a Bulldog issue and not an etrailer issue. etrailer service was outstanding.

- Replacement Coupler Recommendation for 2020 Outdoors RV 23DBSI checked out your 2020 Outdoors RV 23DBS and the Bulldog Collar Lok coupler part # BD64FR would work great as a replacement coupler for it. The Collar Lok style of couplers are very easy to use and hold up really well so we recommend them highly.
