How to Determine if Slipper Spring SP-177275 Will Fit Trailer

Question:

Slipper spring, Item # SP-177275. Will this fit a Harbor Freight 4 foot x 8 foot folding trailer? The current springs are about 22-1/2 inch long and 20-1/2 inch between the mounting bolts. Thanks.

I can tell you how to determine if the 2-Leaf Slipper Spring for 1,000-lb Trailer Axles # SP-177275 will fit your trailer, though we do not have information regarding fits for individual trailers.

The best way to determine if a slipper spring will fit is by measuring the length from the center of the spring eye to the end end of the spring, as you can see in the accompanying diagram. The best way to get an accurate length of a leaf spring is with the trailer up on jacks with the axle hanging. You will also need to know the width of the spring you need and the weight rating of your axle.

Slipper Spring # SP-177275 measures 24-5/8" from the center eye to the end of the spring so it is likely going to be too long for your trailer, though this is the shortest spring we offer.

The best we an offer is for you to convert to a double eye spring such as 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles - 23-1/2" Long # SP-113275 for which you'd also need a Hanger Kit such as the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs - 1-1/2" Front, 1-1/4" Rear # APS2 or 3-1/4" Front, 1-1/4" Rear # APS4.

I have added links to our entire selection of double eye and slipper springs, as well as links to help articles on slipper spring and double eye spring suspension which I highly recommend checking out.

I have a two leaf slipper spring that is 26and3/4“ long and 1and 3/4“ wide. Do you have a spring for me?

The closest option we have available is the 4-Leaf # SP-264275. This 1-3/4" wide slipper spring has a 26-1/4" length and is designed for 4,300 pound axles. It's pretty normal for older springs to stretch out a bit over time so the shorter length might actually be correct for your trailer, assuming the axle rating also matches.

@ChrisR how would I determine my axle rating?

@ChrisR Is there a flat end receiver that is capable of being bolted onto my trailer versus being welded on. I could then move that attachment forward to accommodate the shorter 2 leaf spring you have available. Call me if you like, 715-834-0365 or 715-577-5055.
