Left Turn Signal Causes all Trailer Lights to Flash and Right Turn Signal Does Nothing

Question:

I need to rewire a boat trailer to fit a 4 pin attachment. I have a 97 Nissan pickup and have already purchased and installed the pigtail. All lights blink when I hit the left turn signal, no lights blink when I hit the right turn signal. Is there a diagram out there somewhere that can help me? Note: My trailer has six lights: 1 above each wheel, 1 at each back corner low and 1 on each side set on poles to guide the boat into the trailer if the trailer is underwater. What lights are brake lights, turn signals, tail lights, etc.

If you have the Hopkins Wiring Harness # HM43505 installed on your 1997 Nissan pickup you will want to check the 4-flat connector with a circuit tester # PTW2993 and make sure that the wiring on the vehicle is correct and that you have a good ground.

It sounds like a ground problem on the trailer is what is causing your lighting problem. You will want to check that the white ground wire on the trailers 4-way is properly grounded to a good, clean area of bare metal on the frame.

You will also want to make sure that the trailer lights are grounded. If the trailer lights have a white ground wire coming out of the light, you will want to make sure that you have that wire grounded to a good clean metal area on your trailer. If the taillights do not have a white ground wire you will need to make sure the light is getting a good ground with the mounting studs. Some trailer lights are grounded by the studs that attach the lights to the trailer.

On the trailer you can use a circuit tester to test the wires going to the lights to determine which function is for that light.
