Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2018 Mazda CX-9
Question:
I have a hitch that has worked on my last 3 CX9s, last of which was 2015 model. It appears they have changed the under carriage where I now need to buy a new model for my new 2018 CX9?

It looks like the second generation for the Mazda CX-9 began in 2016 and continues through the current model. The changes to the rear frame and bumper on the new generation were enough to require a new trailer hitch for it to fit properly.
As you suspected, you will need to obtain a new hitch for your 2018 Mazda CX-9 and I recommend the Curt Hitch Receiver # C13284. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and all the needed mounting hardware is included.
