Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Mazda CX-9 with SwingDaddy Bike Rack

Question:

Jameson, I ordered the hitch and hitch extender. Final question…I think… What kind of pin or screw do I attache the extender to the hitch with in a way that elliminates “slop” or lose fit?

When we installed the Draw Tite hitch part # 76020 on a 2016 Mazda CX-9 we found that there was a distance of 6 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole out to the furthest point out on the rear bumper.

We used to carry the Yakima SwingDaddy that you mentioned and it had a distance of 6 inches from it's pin hole to the back of the knob for the swing mechanism. So you'd most likely have some contact there.

The other hitch that fits your vehicle, the Curt # C13284 has the exact same clearance so that wouldn't be an alternative worth pursuing. A hitch extender like part # HE06 will give you 7 inches of additional clearance. These adapter will cut the tongue weight capacity of the hitch they are used in by 50 percent, but that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks so much. I had a bad feeling it would have contact. So, if i’ve got 4 bikes on there - call it 150 - 175lbs then 50% of the tongue weight capacity would be plenty to handle those bikes hanging and bouncing while driving? Just don’t want to cause a pile-up on the freeway! :)

The numbers you mentioned would easily be fine. The # 76020 has a tongue weight capacity of 675 lbs so half of that would easily be enough.

We have the part # 63232 which is also a hitch lock that would work great as an anti rattle device.
