Class I Hitch and Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2013 Kia Soul

Question:

I’m looking for a class 2 trailer hitch to fit my 2013 Kia Soul. I’m aware that Kia only says to use class 1 but I will be using a cargo carrier not pulling a trailer. I need a little more tongue weight than class 1. Can you help?

Both of the hitches offered for your 2013 Kia Soul are light-duty Class I types, Draw-Tite # 24839 and Curt # C11110. No hitch maker offers a higher-capacity hitch since the vehicle itself cannot support more tongue weight than their 200-lb rating, or their towing capacity of 2000-lbs.

I do realize you have no intention of towing a trailer, just using a hitch-mounted cargo carrier, but even so the vehicle capacity remains what it is even if you were to bolt on an accessory that is rated higher. In your application I recommend the Draw-Tite hitch # 24839 since it will not require you to use the Curt support strap # 18050. You need to use it with the Curt hitch per their warranty policy, but using it on the Draw-Tite too is not a bad idea.

You can still carry a good bit of cargo on the car.

The Class I-compatible cargo carrier I suggest is the lightweight Curt model # C18110 which weighs only 30-lbs. This means you can load a full 170-lbs of cargo on it and remain within the total hitch tongue weight capacity of 200-lbs. If you want to use a cargo net you might consider the Curt # C18200.
