Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

This is a high quality hitch that fit the car perfectly, easy to install and came with everything needed. The only issue I ran into was the holes in the passenger side (The ones which didn't have the tie down bolted on) were a little to rusty, and to avoid damaging the fine thread bolts I ran a tap through them before bolting the hitch up. Unfortunately I discovered this after I already started the install so I had to drop the hitch to run the tap. I should have checked the holes before I put it up the first time, but it wouldn't hurt to include that in a note on the instructions

by:

I needed a hitch receiver for the used 2003 Honda Pilot I just picked up so that I could use one of my old bike racks (saving a few hundred dollars).

The mount fit perfectly, but there's a HUGE caveat - if you are attaching a receiver on an older car, you MUST MUST MUST MUST clean out the weld nut threads first. There is ample warning about this throughout the comments - and I felt that I did a good job.

Well, I didn't. I chased the threads on the unused weld mounts, after some light cleaning with 3M industrial cleaner, using one of the old bolts from the tow hook I needed to remove. I coated the bolt with WD40 and slowly threaded it in to the first weld nut. When I couldn't hand-tighten anymore, I used a ratchet. After applying a very light amount of torque, the weld broke on the nut. With the bolt now stuck in one of the holes I needed to use, I spent the next 2 hours with a drill and a hack saw to cut the bolt.

Since I was only going to mount bikes on the hitch, I was willing to go with only 2 bolts on one side, but I obviously couldn't afford to break any more weld nuts. I spent the next couple of weeks meticulously cleaning out the threads with a bettery terminal cleaner and industrial cleaner (about 15 minutes each night). Finally I was able to get full travel on all the nuts with the old bolts, and that's when I was easily able to install the hitch.

Bottom line - don't mess around with the weld nuts. Clean them obsessively before trying to apply the smallest amount of torque.

Very happy with the end result.

Amazing tow hitch. Quality, heavy duty and easy install. The process from ordering online with your convenient website, to the install videos, and then receiving the product was great! Installed right on to the undercarriage, with no issues! The install was also very easy with a helping hand, some WD-40 (because of the rust on my wife’s 2007 Honda Pilot) , and pneumatic tools. Thanks etrailer.com!! Shout out to George and Carol for your emails!

Great addition to the family truck. This product has paid for itself 10 times over with its use in the past 12 months. These guys at etrailer are pros and their website is awesome. Continue the great work!!

I am pleased I found and bought my hitch from etrailer.com. Selecting the correct hitch was made easy using the tools on their website and it arrived earlier and well was packaged. I’m not a do-it-yourselfer so it took me about 3 ½ to install the hitch and it fit like a glove once I realized what underparts had to be removed before it could be secured to the frame. Lastly, I don’t understand why anyone would pay more for their hitch; etrailor.com hit a standing home run!

Fabulous hitch! I just needdd one to put a bike rack on my Honda pilot. It has worked perfectly. Install was a breeze. I brought it to my cousin who is a mechanic and he had it done in no time. One year later still perfectly strong.

by:

The hitch fit properly, but installing it on a 16-yr-old car was not that easy, as the bolts were rusted on the car and the spot welds didn't hold when they were removed and then reinserted. Fixable, but not by me, I ended up having to hire somebody to install the hitch. That's not an issue for the hitch -- just a warning for anybody trying to install the hitch on an old car -- be verrrryyyy careful with those rusty old bolts and welds.

It is going to take some elbow grease to clean out the bolt holes on older vehicles due to all the road grime and debris that builds up. We have a FAQ that can help.

by:
2006 Honda Pilot

I didn't want to have to put a trailer hitch on my car, but after my wife suffered a stroke and now has a mobility scooter, I simply couldn't keep manhandling that heavy scooter in and out of the car, so we decided to get a scooter platform.

I was also hoping this would be an easy-install because I'm not a mechanic by any definition.

I was amazed at how fast this trailer hitch arrived at my home and was really pleased that it bolted up into place exactly as the online video demonstrated, despite the fact that I have a full-sized spare tire! I was really concerned that I'd have to go back to the factory-installed "doughnut" tire, but while things are a bit snug, it worked out just as I had hoped it would. This hitch was a PERFECT fit.

**Important Note** MAKE SURE that you clean the bolt-holes out with a wire brush like they show you in the video and shoot some WD-40 or some other kind of lubricant into the holes and onto the bolts before installation. You also might want to try a mounting bolt in each hole before mounting. If you don't, you'll wish you did.

FYI, once you remove the tow-hook from the drivers side, there won't be any room to replace it, so just put that thought out of your mind.

The bolts do not thread. I tried both sizes. Neither are correct.

Sometimes we do hear that the bolts do not fit into the weld nuts on the frame. Often what has happened is that debris has built up in the weld nuts and needs to be cleaned out to allow the bolts to fit. Using a wire brush and penetrating oil to clean out the bolt holes will help. I have a FAQ below that explains it in more detail.

by:

Simple bolt on! Easy fit. We had a lot of dirt In the existing bolt holes. Make sure to use a wire brush to clean them up before installing the new bolts.

by:

Finally got this installed! Only took 2-3 hours :( should have only taken 15 mins. Thought the wrong bolts were sent because they would not screw in. Then took off the tow hook and all the screws went in there fine because there was bolts in those holes. The exhaust side was so gunked up and rusted I had to put a wire brush up there and twist it around a bunch of times and run the bolts in and out several times to get it to go in more. Also had to use a cheater bar for leverage it was so hard to screw-in. Finally was able to get it and it was very secure. I was unable to screw the 2 Bots to the bumper area because it was too rusted there but it is definitely sturdy enough to hold bikes. I plan on taking off my bumper to replace the bumper support later so I can screw those in. Overall it seems to be to very good quality and I am glad I got the less expensive etrailer version.

by:

Works great. Important the way it locks onto the receiver on the car.

by:

I was a bit nervous installing this hitch since the shops charge $500-600 just for installation. However, I found it easy to figure out how was supposed to install. The only problem I had was one of the bolt holes in my car was badly rusted. The thread size was an odd one soit took a while to find the right tap. Once I found one it was smooth sailing.

The issue with this hitch was during the installation. Had to loosen all the bolts to align the exhaust pipes, other than that it was OK. After one year, no issue.

Bought this hitch for my son's 2007 Honda Pilot as a christmas present. It arrived here in what I would call record time, ordered Saturday and here Tuesday or Wednesday. My son absolutely loved it and was able to have it installed in about an hour. The video was really not needed since it aligned and fit perfectly. Wish I had asked him to take photos. Would definitely recommend the product and etrailer!

2017 Acura MDX

Excellent product! I had purchased a class I hitch from you seven years ago, used it a couple times, but not in the past 5 years. When I recently bought a utility trailer I found that the bumper on my 2002 MDX had rusted to the point where I was not comfortable hauling anything with the class I. That's when I order the class III. installed the new hitch myself - it took about 4 hours, because I had to cut the lower bolts on the old hitch to get it off, and then had to tap the three frame bolt holes on the passengers side - they were full of 17 years worth of rust/dirt/debris. Now that it's all buttoned up, I couldn't be happier. This sucker is one sturdy hitch!

2005 Acura MDX

Well fabricated piece, prompt delivery and the installation video online is helpful but ... I'm not thrilled with the fit on my 2005 MDX. I had to modify both muffler heat shields in order to get the hitch mounted without interference. Now that it's installed, it's pushing the "ears" of the lower bumper trim panel (between the hitch and the exhaust tips) out of position. Looks like I'll need to drop the exhaust again and make additional modifications to get the bumper trim back where it should be. Seems to work fine for towing but moderately disappointing overall when I was expecting a 60 minute project with an exact fit. If it wasn't such a big undertaking, I'd be thinking about returning this product and trying to find a hitch that was better designed to fit the car.

by:

Items were packed pretty well, nothing seemed to have moved or been damaged during shipping. Part fit as good as OEM, all hardware was correct and the harness fit perfectly.

  • etrailer Hitch Rattling Against Exhaust on 2003 Honda Pilot
Thank you for your purchase of the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98851. The issue with an exhaust/muffler coming into contact with a hitch isn't a wholly unusual one, but you'll need to examine the underside where the hitch is mounted to locate the exact issue. The # e98851 hitch does fit right next to the exhaust and my guess is it may be the exhaust heat shield that is coming into contact with the hitch. That happens sometimes, and what you can do is trim the part that is interfering...

The entire exhaust does not need get removed though as it's just the rubber hangers that hold the exhaust at the rear of the vehicle.
