Roadmaster Tow Bar Braking Systems - RM-751428

  • Stop Light Switch
  • Roadmaster

Avoid damage to your vehicle by ensuring that your supplemental braking system is properly positioned and working effectively. Kit activates your RV monitoring system to alert you when the brakes of your towed car are being applied.

Features:

  • Activates motorhome brake-monitoring system whenever brake pedal in towed car is applied
    • Ensures that the supplemental braking system is functioning properly
  • Works great for any application that does not have a tow position in the ignition
  • Wires directly into towed car's fuse box for constant current
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • 12 Volts
  • Application: custom fit for your vehicle

This kit allows your RV's monitoring system to alert you whenever the brake pedal of your towed car is being applied. Other systems operate according to whether the air cylinder is extended and provide no indication of what is happening with the pedal itself. If your supplemental braking system is improperly installed, it may be continuously pressing on the pedal, impeding it from fully retracting and possibly causing damage to your vehicle's tires and braking system. With Roadmaster's Stop Light Switch Kit, you will always know when the brake is being depressed, and you will avoid costly damage.

This product was to put a stop light switch on My HHR. The instructions were very good and it was working correctly the first time I hooked it up. The problem was I didn't tighten the nuts on the switch and I did not have a wrench the was thin enough to tighten it. So I had to remove the whole thing tighten the switch then install it again. All that said it is a good item and works very well. It is very inexpensive
way to get an independant brake light switch to use that will not in any way interfere
with the vehicle operation.

Everything looks to be in order and looks like it will be easy to install with complete instructions.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2008 Chevy HHR
You will need a base plate on your 2008 Chevy HHR to flat tow it. For that you would want the Roadmaster # 3141-1 which is a confirmed fit. For a tow bar you would want the Roadmaster Falcon part # RM-520 which comes with safety cables. Aside from that it sounds like you have the lighting and braking systems covered. If your brake system draws power from the HHR battery it will need the outlet kit part # RM-9332 as it looks like your vehicle battery needs to be disconnected. The part...

  • Stop Light Switch Kit for a 2008 Chevy HHR SS
When using supplemental braking like the Even Brake # RM-9400 on your 2008 Chevy HHR SS you will have to use the stop light switch kit # RM-751428 in order for everything to work properly and so that you know the vehicle brake pedal is actually moving. A 12-volt outlet kit # RM-9332 is also recommended because the regular 12-volt outlet on the vehicle will either have no power or not enough power for the braking system when the vehicle is set up in the tow position. There isn't a specific...

  • Is a Supplemental Braking System and Breakaway Required for Flat Towing in the United States
Yes, pretty much all states (with the exception of Missouri for some reason) and Canadian provinces require that a towed vehicle have a supplemental braking system and most all supplemental braking systems come with a breakaway unit. The most economical is the BrakeMaster # RM-9160 which works with RVs that have air brakes or air over hydraulic braking systems. Otherwise I recommend the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. In either case these are proportional systems that apply the same amount...

  • Does a 2008 Chevy HHR Need a Brake Light Relay to be Flat Towed
On the 2008 Chevy HHR, Roadmaster recommends installing a 12 volt outlet, # RM-9332, and a brake switch kit, # RM-751428. Because your HHR has a combined brake and turn signal circuit, a brake light relay, # RM-88400, is not needed. From the information I have, you will need to pull a fuse or fuses. Consult the vehicle owners manual to determine any additional specific information on fuses that need to be pulled.

  • How to Get Brake Light Switch Signal for Flat Tow Wiring on a 2009 Chevy HHR
The brake light switch on your 2009 Chevy HHR is impossible to find (as you've experienced) so you're going to need to actually install the Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751428. You won't be needing to use the Brake Light Relay Kit # RM-88400 because your tail light wiring is combined and not separate. I have attached an installation video of the stop light switch kit on a 2011 HHR that you can check out.

It sounds like you need a compatible tow bar for the XL style base plates you already have on your 2009 HHR. The most popular option for XL style base plates is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. • Towing a non-SS 2010 Chevy HHR Behind a Motor Home
No, the Chevy HHR and HHR SS are fundamentally different were the base plates install so you would not be able to use the SS base plates, # 523159-1, on a non-SS model. I have verified this with my contact at Roadmaster. For a non-SS model you would use base plates # 3141-1. For a compatible tow bar I recommend the Falcon 2, # RM-520, and safety cables # RM-643. For lighting you can use a magnetic lighting kit # RM-2120. Or for a more permanent solution you can use diode kit # RM-154....
