Rightline Gear Sport 2 on SUV

The Rightline Gear Sport 2 cargo bag holds your gear securely on the roof of your vehicle. It can be mounted on the roof rack, cargo basket, or bare roof of most small SUVs, minivans, or crossovers. This premium, aerodynamic cargo bag is perfect for any camping trip, shopping spree, or family vacation.

PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT

Closeup of Sport 1 cargo bag material and inner PVC layer

The bag is made of PVC semi-coated polyester mesh XT. The material is treated with WeatherGuard waterproofing and blocks 98 percent of UV rays to help prevent fading. The PVC material is also strengthened with a nylon grid that helps prevent rips and tears. This waterproof fabric stays flexible in hot or cold temperatures so it can be folded for compact storage.

Watertight, Double-Sealed Seams

Closeup of Sport 2 cargo bag seam and material

The bag has double-sealed seams to protect your cargo from the elements. The seams are sewn to reinforce the connections and then fused together to create a watertight seal that blocks out rain and snow.

Waterproof Zipper

Diagram of zip right zipper placement on cargo bag

The SZIP zipper is welded onto the surface of the bag and concealed under a layer of waterproof rubber. This gives the zipper more shelter from rain than ordinary under-the-flap zippers. The Zipper also has a waterproof TPU coating. The coating makes the zipper thick and the bond between sides tight. Apply a small amount of the included lubricant to the surface of the zipper to make it slide smoother and easier.

Loaded PackRight Sport 1 cargo bag unzipped and on top of vehicle

The zipper also runs three-quarters of the way around the roof bag, so you can easily load up the bag or access your gear.

Versatile Mounting Options

Rightline Gear Sport 2 cargo bag tied down to roof rack side rails on top of vehicle

The Rightline Gear Sport 2 cargo bag can be attached to a roof rack, factory raised side rails, or a cargo basket with the integrated straps. Simply wrap each strap around a solid anchor point, thread the strap first through the end loop and then through the buckle, and pull it tight.

Rightline Gear Sport 2 clips

To mount the bag on a naked roof, attach the 4 included car clips to the straps and hook them over the door frame weather molding. The hooks have 5/8" openings to fit over the door ledges. Your vehicle's doors should close easily over the hooks to secure them in place.

A roof pad (sold separately) is available to keep the bag from sliding around and to protect the top of your vehicle from scratches.

Locking Options

Zipper in the flap of Sport 2 cargo bag

To lock up the bag, run a Rightline Gear locking cable (sold separately) through the cutouts in the zipper pulls. Then, if you want to lock the bag to your roof, run the cable around your roof rack rails.

We drove from Texas to oregon and back with this bag on top of our 2014 Ford Taurus. Along the drive, there was super hot weather, and some crazy storms in the TX panhandle and it worked great - kept everything dry. The car has a moon roof and I was worried the weight would hurt it in some way - crack the glass, cause leaking some how - but it didn't.
We had to stop occasionally to tighten down the straps but it was never serious. The eye holes on the zippers are large enough you can put a small lock through it to keep it safe when you are away from the car for short stops, such as at restaurants. When we stayed in a hotel, we would take the bag off and put it in the cab of the car. Something you couldn't do with a hard shell! We put 4 carry-on size suitcases in it and two big pillows and there was still plenty of room for more. I weighed it afterwords and I think we had a total of around 50 lbs in the bag.
All-in-all, this is a really good bag.

by:

This rooftop cargo bag worked great! I drove over 400 miles, at highway speeds, and it did not budget! The video on the etrailer website on how to set up the cargo bag was excellent. I made sure the straps were right, and had a car w a roof rack, so installation was super easy. My trip with this carrier was a success!

by:

This is an awesome product. I was moving from CA to NM and needed extra storage space. This cargo bag was perfect. It is everything that Etrailer advertises it to be. It never caused any problems while driving and talk about water proof, this picture speaks volumes. Covered by 2 ft of snow for 2 days and the stored items were as dry as when they were put in the cargo bag. The only thing I did different was to use a different method to tie down the bag. If you need extra cargo space to transport your belongings look no further, this is perfect, in my opinion [thumbs up]

by:

The 1st one was defective, called customer service. They got problem fixed quickly(received a new one). Took it on a 6500 mile trip this summer and was a charm. I was carrying about 150 pounds on the roof. The bag held great in rain, hail and hot sun.About half the trip was on interstates. Definitely a good buy for the money. Product was top rate.

by:

I've only had the opportunity to use this storage bag for one round trip from Dallas to Santa Fe, but it held up perfectly and kept everything dry during a heavy rain. I did check the straps about every 4 hours of driving, and found that they did need to be tightened a little. I would recommend this product!

by:

I’ve now used the bag twice, with a roof basket on my 2021 Telluride. The first time I used it, I also used additional straps to tie down to the roof basket. The bag performed very well. On the second trip, because of the excellent previous experience, I just used the straps that came with the bag. Bad idea!! The attachment point of one of the straps half peeled off, and the bag itself began to split along one of its seams. Clearly, the attachment points are too flimsy. This shouldn’t happen after using only twice.

This bag does come with a one year warranty. I can send you that information.

You can not use this rooftop bag directly on your roof as advertised. It will slide off. I had it fastened through the window and had to stop and adjust it 3 or 4 times. You could possibly lose it. Do not recommend

We bought this bag to increase our carrying capacity for a cross-country, coast-to-coast move in our little Prius C. It did not disappoint. The material is tough and easy to wipe down before storing. The zippers are well-constructed and we never had to worry about them breaking. The strap system held the bag solidly in place, even driving highway speeds into strong headwinds for hours at a time. The only downsides were the reduced gas mileage (which we expected with the added weight and height of the bag) and the increased road noise since the bag's straps tug on the installation strips of the car doors (which we didn't expect, but just meant we had to choose music and podcasts with audio quality that could handle a turn-up on the volume). For us, the most important thing was that we fully doubled the amount of stuff we were able to bring with us, which mattered since a massive chunk of our car's cargo space was taken up by our two cats. We bought the bag for the move specifically, but it's so easy to pop on the roof that we've used it for a couple of smaller road trips to save ourselves the usual hassle of trunk tetris. This bag is beautifully functional -- totally worth the investment!

2-part positive review here. First, I received fantastic customer service from etrailer! I purchased this cargo bag about 10 days prior to a trip from Philly to Fla. I emailed them after the purchase to confirm delivery date (because we couldn’t have gone to Fla without a roof bag), and I received a reply within a day. Sure enough the product was delivered in a couple days, giving me time to make sure it would fasten correctly and stay secure, by making a few practice trips around town. And boy, did it work!! Part 2 of positive review. On our 17-hour trip to Fla, we drove through about 12 hours of rain, 2 of them TORRENTIAL RAIN…pull over, no visibility, in a car-wash, type of rain. No way our luggage and other belongings were going to be dry, right? When we finally reached our destination and opened up the cargo bag everything was BONE DRY! The cargo bag held 4 duffel bags, a carry-on travel bag, a tennis racket and some random small things. It held a little more on our return trip, of course. Sorry no pics, I usually don’t write reviews but felt this company (etrailer) and the cargo bag from Rightline earned it.

by:

We use this to store 2 full sized suitcases and put it on the roof rack. We travel about 800 miles one way and never had any issues and everything remains completely dry. Tough, durable and 100% weather proof. I use my own heavy duty tie down straps and the bag never moves. Be sure to check it every couple hundred miles for any movement. Highly recommend!

by:

I think it's a little over priced, but well made. We went though an absolute monsoon with hard rain for over an hour and no water entered carrier. I did use it as intended, zippers to rear and all velcro secured on sides to conceal the zipper. I think the bottom could have had some cushion to it and I'm not wild about advertising for them with the large logos. Overall, pretty good value.

I have used the carrier twice now on long multi-day trips and original review stands. I will add this is a perfect fit and max size you can have on top of a Nissan Xterra while retaining the rear bar. Our X had two bars and I had to remove one to fit this carrier between the cargo box and rear bar that is adjusted all the way aft. Its a good bag and probably cant be beat for the money for something you expect to use once a twice a year and last many years.

by:

I live in Manhattan. The parking garages double the price if you have a roof rack.
I needed to find a solution. Got rid of my Thule( it was old ) and purchased the Rightline gear sport 2 roof rack.
Love it. Totally waterproof
Easy on and off.
Folds up in back of car
Saving a ton

by:

only used once but in very harsh conditions, NY to CO to Florida 5200 miles driven snow, rain, ice -15 degrees to 90 plus degrees. No leaks or broken zippers.

by:

using this with a yakima megawarrior. works great, easy to use and gave us tons of room for duffels and other gear. cinches down nicely if you're not using all the space.

by:

Returned from round trip to North Carolina from New Jersey. Used Rightline cargo bag on both legs. It worked well, without a problem. Stores in small bag, included. In addition, etrailer responded quickly to my inquiry about shipping time. The article arrived on time.

by:

This bag has several thousand miles on top of our Wrangler under it’s belt! Since the cargo space in the Jeep is occupied by a German Shepherd, we needed a solution for our luggage and various necessities. This bag does the trick! And, it’s built like it should do the trick for a long time.

by:

Very cool!!!

by:

It appears to be a fine bag. Haven't used yet will let you know more after our trip. etrailer was great to work with. Highly recommend them. Very helpful.

This bag has worked well for our family. Highly recommend it.

by:

Excellent product. Fits great on top of my Yukon and is waterproof. Sturdy construction. Can stuff a lot of items in it.
Traveled 3000 miles with it in one trip and it held up well. Friend of mine borrowed it for a waterproof container for clothes in the back of his pick-up truck. Worked well.

by:

This cargo bag has been great. It's tough and sturdy. I've used it on several long trips which included rain and snow, it stayed dry inside. I've lent it to several friends for long trips and had all positive feedback from them. Its easy to install on a car or SUV. It holds a about 5 or 6 big suitcases plus anything else I can shove in there.

by:

Yes, I like it very much. No problems.

by:

Worked awesome, glad i had a roof rack, the clips for doors didnt work on my 2010 Camry. Snow, rain, freezing temperatures, everything held ateong and dry

by:

Just got the product and opened it up...haven't used it yet, but love its compact design, and type of fabric, and I bought it not only because of the price/waterproof quality/ but also the zipper. Will follow up after the trip! The etrailer site shipped out quickly...AOK...

by:

This was fantastic, fit tons of stuff and kept all of our stuff dry. We took it on an 8 hour road trip with rain. I would recommend this product, it is made very well!

by:

This bag is pretty thick and love that it’s waterproof. Perfect size for the top of the Jeep.

  • What is Roof Weight Capacity of 2005 Saab 9-2x For Roof Cargo Bag
I was able to pull up the owners manual of your 2005 Saab 9-2x and they list a 100 lb roof rack capacity for your vehicle. I wouldn't recommend carry 100 lbs directly on the roof of your vehicle though. For a bag that is designed to fit vehicles with naked roofs as well as ones with roof racks you would want the Rightline Ace 2 part # RL100S20 which can carry up to 15 cubic feet of storage space. A 48 x 60 inch roof should be plenty large enough. I also recommend pad # RL100650 to not only protect the roof but also to help keep the bag in place. The benefit of a roof rack and cargo box is that the system won't be resting on the roof and boxes offer better security and protection from the elements. Using a tire step is much safer than standing in an open doorway of a vehicle.
