The roof basket has come in quite handy for the stuff that doesn't quite fit in my tiny car as my small business continues to grow bigger and bigger. It's easy to install, sturdy, and a perfect size for my Scion xD. VERY happy with this purchase.

My full package
DS118B Rhino-Rack 2500
MT70115
MaxxTow Cargo Basket

I have a 2017 Nissan Sentra and had a camping trip coming up, so we needed a roof rack and because it's a lease, I didn't want to scuff up the roof paint with a sagging roof bag (Reese waterproof bag), so I had to get a roof cargo basket.

First off, the 2 products were a complete success. The sturdiness and the ease of installation and uninstallation were very pleasing. The cargo basket attached without a hitch. I'm looking forward to our next trip.
I would suggest that when/if you purchase a MaxxTow Basket, tape the plastic and metal pieces together. The plastic pieces fall out when you are trying to align the bolt up with the nuts. And I installed the bolts facing down so that there was less hardware in the way. When the bolts are up, the cargo can't seat all the way down.
I highly recommend this entire roof system.

I still love it. The only quirk is that the rubber sleeve that cover the connection isnt as water tight as I would hope, so water gets in, creates dirty, rusty water which spills onto the car. I might just tape it up with a, electrical tape or something. Its rock solid either way.

This is a good product - value for the money. Well made, goes together smoothly, and does the job it's designed for. I bought it for a rack on the fiberglass top of my 2-door Jeep, where light weight and small size were called for. I saw no warning about "Do not use on Off-road vehicles" in sales description, which I discovered later in instructions, but decided to go ahead anyway. Glad I did. I just completed a trip over the Rubicon Trail in the California Sierras and the basket is still solid. (I did carry less than 100# on it, on purpose, knowing how the cargo would be rocked and rolled).

A few things about assembly: Noting other reviewers' experience, I first test-screwed the self-tapping screws into the inner tube holes with a #2 Phillips screwdriver (this is no place for a drill driver), and then took them back out. This made assembly easier later, especially for the one in eight holes that was slightly misaligned.
I used ACE Waterproof Silicon grease to pre-lube the Protective Gaskets ("Use a quality grade grease" isn't a very precise specification). The gaskets barely clear the holes anyway, so no need to worry about the 1 3/4" measurement described. I tried the washers under the screw heads, but by the time I felt the screws were securing the tubes together well the washers were so destroyed as to serve no purpose, so I left them out. The protective gaskets then easily slipped over the screw heads, covering the whole tube-to-tube joint. Very solid-feeling asssembly.
It didn't take long during attachment of basket to rack to see that shorter U-bolts were called for, so out came the hack saw and file - off came 1/2" of each U-bolt end and thread ends were filed smooth. The protective caps were difficult to wiggle down into the knob tops, and post-trip inspection showed two missing from cargo rubs. Their projection up into cargo area is not the best design, and for my use where basket will come off after each trip anyway (doesn't fit under garage door), weather protection for those U-bolt ends is not important.
( I include no photos because of not-recommended off-road use of this fine basket.)

Suggestions to Manufacturer: 1. Include a 1/2 oz tub of ACE waterproof silicon grease (cheap kindness). 2. Shorten the U-bolts by 3/8". I have three different roof racks (2 OEM and 1 after-market) and none exceed 1 1/4" in thickness. This should save 80% of your customers from having to find a hack saw. 3. Consider making flat-topped knob caps. 4. Keep doing what you're doing in the way of precision manufacturing - I was happily surprised at the quality of fit and finish for the price.

This is a great item easy to assemble had it on in a matter of minutes it's 30 seems like it would last a long time The only thing that I did is I should have got a longer one The distance between my crossbars was exactly 45 in so I had to attach him by the end bars but it still worked still secure they're not coming off looks great

Great Rack, unfortunately it was too small so I sold it and I bought a larger one The length on this was 48 in which was the minimum I could use I made it something that was 40 in longer but it was easy to assemble and it did hold up while I was using it and the person that has it now is using it just fine and loves it

I'm a little torn as to rate the MaxxTow Roof Mounted Cargo Basket 3 1/2 or 4 stars. Honestly, it could have been a 4 1/2 or 5 star rating except one thing. Rust. I've only had this rack for 1 week, that's 7 days and it's already rusting. This was after the first small rain shower.

You have to take into consideration the price point, which is by far a GREAT value. I used this cargo basket in conjunction with Malone Roof Racks for a 3000 mile road trip from Texas to Colorado. We went from Thunderstorms to Blizzards and no issues.

I have read quite a few reviews regarding the assembly and how difficult the little screws are to get in when putting together the basket. That the holes on the rack are too small and have to be drilled out. This was the case with mine but I didn't drill them out. The hardware that's included are actually steel screws which are meant to go in tight and kinda of burrow the hole out making it bigger. I just made sure to have a Philips screw driver that fit perfectly and took my time. I screwed in the screw a bit, then backed it out and went to tighten it again. No issues, no problem. In regards to mounting the basket to the roof rack, WAY easy.

The basket outer tubes are very strong. The actual tubes in the inside of the basket are pretty weak. You can easily bend them with your hands. But they have a lot of them so strength in numbers.

I would suggest NOT tightening your roof rack until you have it spaced out the correct distance (or spread) that's suggested but that also works with the cargo basket. You can see the rust in the last photo. I've seen some reviews that said after a year or more NO rust on theirs. I don't know, maybe something in the construction or coating changed since then. Still a great value for the price. I could spray it with Rustoleum or something similar but might just get a Thule basket.

Ordering was simple, and the parcel arrived on time as promised.

The luggage rack is packaged in three separate sections that must be put together before securing it to the roof.

All parts in the box were precisely as they appeared in the parts list. The hardware is well-designed for easy securing to the roof and can withstand the weather. And the rack itself although relatively lite-weight is structurally sturdy. It fit my Sportage perfectly. The instructions to assemble the rack were clear and straightforward to follow.

The problem is in the assembly of the three sections. The pre-drilled holes are insufficient for the sheet metals crews that secure any two sections together. Because of that, it takes high torque to drive them completely in, and that causes stripping the head of the Phillip screws, which makes the driver turn without moving the screw into its final destination. Almost all the connection had to be re-drilled. And that is the only problem with this product, albeit not a small one.

I looked hard and long but couldn’t find anything of good quality that can compete with the price. There are racks on the market for $300 to $400, but I don’t see what those can do for me that this rack cannot.

I think this cargo basket will work great! It seems pretty durable which is great for the price point. Had some trouble getting the screws that secure the three basket parts together fully tight. Had to use a rubber mallet to line the screw holes up fully. Easy to get on my cross bars. The railings did come scratched out of the box but honestly not a huge deal to me as long as it does its job. Also very low profile I’ve got a bronco sport so I can leave it on and still get into my garage with no clearance issues

Overall, super happy with it and excited to use it.

Solidly constructed! Great fit for my Forester. The somewhat flimsy shipping box should be a bit stronger, because it was damaged but not the contents. Love the product and doing business with eTrailer--have recommended you guys several times!

Still love it! Easy on easy off is great feature. Have only taken it off once to see what MPG hit I was taking. 1-2 MPG, so it stays on all the time now.

Well built steel rack. Easy to mount. Good price

by:

company bumped me to 2 day shipping for no additional price which was awesome. rack showed up all scuffed up from shipping i assume.(ups...ahh that explains it). one of the mounting brackets was bent wrong and wont seat properly. i emailed them about it and they refused to replace it. instead they told me to beat it on with something. rack was a pain to put together as the sections didnt line up correctly i ended up having to pry on it to slide the tubes together. all of this aside i guess i am happy with it cause it does its job and holds stuff. the basket doesnt have the best wind deflector but it does help a lot. for the price im happy i guess. products nice and sturdy when i mounted it. you can removeca small section of the middle ifyou so choose to make it smaller. besides the bracket i am ok with the product i got.

This basket is pretty good value for money, but it does have its flaws. It came a little scratched up from shipping, but it's no big deal to me. Assembly is the only reason I had to knock it down to 4 stars. The screws WILL NOT go in with just a screwdriver. I had to use a power drill to just get the screws in, as the tray came in three pieces. To line up the screw holes, I had to get a rubber mallet and force the pieces together. Not a big deal, but the product could've had a bit more refinement. After it's put together though, it looks great! I haven't used it to haul anything yet, but I would have no problems trusting it for a cross country road trip. Wind noise isn't bad either. Even at 80mph, I don't have to raise my voice to have a conversation with my passengers. All in all, it's a good product for the money. You could spend more, but I see no reason why you should.

by:

The rack is great, i love the look of it and the size is perfect for my Patriot. The only problem i had was the screws they sent me were way too big. Either that or the holes were too small. I spent two hours trying to get them in, I had to drill bigger holes for it to work. Other than that, I’m very satisfied.

by:

It was a good sturdy product it got really scratched up during shipping nothing some spray paint won't fix has a couple weld wires hanging off but it was a lot cheaper than a different basket I installed it on a 2009 Prius Yakima Q towers that were used

My v70 with the Mighty Maxx Roof rack purchased from etrailer

by:

The product definitely looks good. I have yet to try it but will be in the next couple of weeks.
The product is nice though it was a little hard to put together. I recommend using your own screws as mine would not work. The MaxHaul sticker on the product is also peeling off already.
Overall super happy with the product. Will be happy to update once I have used it.

Purchased this for our 2014 Subaru Impreza Hatchback with fixed OEM cross bars. This MaxxTow Cargo Basket is very good quality materials and assembled easily. I love that the rubber covers for the joints which will help keep everything dry and rust free. I recommend putting Lock-tite on the screws to prevent them from loosening if you leave the rack on for any period of time. This basket looks awesome on the car! Easy to mount and very sturdy on the cargo bars. Curt Waterproof Bag C18220 fits literally perfect in this basket. Thanks etrailer for the recommendation!

Roof Basket is very practical and we ended up painting the entire basket with Herculiner spray truck bed liner product. We started with alcohol prepcleaning and Rustoleum metal primer first. We did this for durability and it worked great. As some have mentioned once the basket gets wet there may be some minor rust where cross bars of basket connect to the larger tube frame. These area are hard to reach so spray painting was our solution. Looks amazing and very durable for leaving on your car for the winter season.

by:

A little difficult to assemble basket as one end did not line up with middle section, had to muscle it to line up and join together. Washers need to be metal not plastic, when you tightened the screws the washers would pop off. Will be using product next week.

I am extremely happy with the fast delivery and quality products I have purchased at etrailer.com

Still great, good construction, fabulous price. Had to paint a few joints with minor rust to keep looking new but that was expected with steel. Another etrailer find!!

by:

Excellent web page to find all products you need for your vehicle, ordered roof rack and cargo rack for my Mitsubishi outlander sport everything fit great easy installation fast delivery, etrailer will be first one to go to for future needs

by:

Great product! Very easy assembly, put together in about 15 minutes and installed on the vehicle in 10 minutes.

by:

Excellent for the price. Rack fitted vehicle mount properly. Paint in some areas, and wind deflector decorative lamination peeled off. Used cargo netting and Ratchet tie down straps to hold 2 trunks and4 folding chairs in place. Minimal wind noise was noticed & only when vehicle windows were down. Will be using it again for upcoming road trip.

by:

Reasonably satisfied. On the roof for a year now, over 30k miles. The knobs for the attaching shackles stick up into the carry area, but it works with big rubber stoppers supplied. The faceplate hasn't faired well though. The logo-decal for the company has deteriorated and will require sanding it off and repainting the faceplate. Looks terrible the way it is now. Overall, satisfied with cost, assembly and performance.

by:

After one year it looks great, works great, no issues. Very happy with my choice!
