Question:

Hello. Im interested in securing a cargo storage option for the roof of my 2015 GMC Yukon SLT. What options might you have available for this? Thank you.

You've got a couple of great options for the 2015 GMC Yukon in terms of rooftop storage.

Prior to purchasing any rooftop solution, you'll want to verify your vehicle's roof capacity. This capacity will include the cargo solution itself (Be it a bag, box, or basket) and anything loaded inside of that solution. You can verify this capacity with your owner's manual or vehicle manufacturer.

If you're looking for something straightforward and don't plan on carrying anything else on your roof, the Rightline Gear Sport 2, part # RL100S20, is a temporary, removable rooftop bag that mounts to your door jambs and can be removed quickly and easily when not in use. This bag is a waterproof cargo bag that provides an additional 15 cubic foot of storage on the roof of your vehicle. Its strong, protected zippers unzip three quarters of the top of the bag for easy loading, and are below a flap for added water protection.

If instead you'd like something a little more robust, and would like the added versatility of a roof rack, then a cargo box or basket is a better pick.

For a roof rack, I recommend the Rhino Rack kit, parts # RRVA150B-2, # RRRCH4, and # RRRCP43-BK. This will mount to your factory flush rails and provide two crossbars for use with a number of cargo boxes, bike racks and other solutions.

From here, you'll pick a cargo box if you're looking for a robust, more permanent option, or a cargo basket if you're looking for a rugged or offroad application.

You'll need to know your crossbar spread and front clearance for these applications. On the 2015 GMC Yukon, your crossbar spread is 28 inches, and you'll want to pick cargo solutions where that spread falls within their range or listed as a specific range.

To get the front clearance, you'll need to measure from the centerpoint of where the front roof rack will install to the line where the rear hatch meets the roof. If you're measuring prior to the install, you'll look inside the flush rails on the roof of your vehicle for a plate or bolt near the front of the rails. The bigger, center bolt in this position will be roughly the same position as the center of the roof rack.

Because each vehicle is different, I've included a link to a page listing every cargo box we offer. I recommend looking at the Yakima SkyBox and RocketBox series, as these are flexible, easy to use boxes with dual side access, and their clamping system is easy to use. Plus, their locking handles include integrated locks that won't close until you've removed the key, making it easy to remember that you've locked the box.

If you get lost or need more help selecting a box, let me know your front clearance measurement and I'm happy to provide a more precise recommendation.
