Great product and I will now be able to open my tailgate with the trailer attached. An upgrade to my power jack prevented an open tailgate. Great service and very fast delivery. Allstars!!

by:

Bought it so I could open my tail gate when hitch to the trailer. The tail gate would hit the electric tong jack. On some jacks you can easily modifiy the jack to turn to side ways position. In my case not a simple mod. So I went to 18 inch shank.

by:

This hitch gave me the extra clearance I needed to be ble to open my tailgate with the trailer in place. It changed the flex point on the trailer ball a little but not enough to make a difference. It solved a problem for me.

by:

This was a great purchase I have a ram 1500 with a 5 7 bed. I was hesitant that I would not have enough clearance for the golf cart with the tailgate down but after finding this wdh it did the job. Of course I had to lengthen my chains and extend my 7 pin cable but this does the job and worlds great with the weight distribution. My first time out I got stuck in a tight camping spot but even in a tight spot never made contact with my tailgate. I absolutely recommend and will post pictures. Ram 1500 5.7 hemi

by:

I purchased this to replace my 12” long hitch. This allowed me to keep my tailgate down and pull my camper. The hitch came in 2 days and took 10 min to swap the head from my Husky Weight Distribution Hitch. Still has the same 14,000lb rating as the 12” I took off. Of course my wife and kids were happy that we were able to take the golf cart for the first time with the camper. Great product! For reference, my truck is a 2015 Sierra 2500HD duramax pulling a 2018 Cruiser Embrace EL280 @ 6360lb dry.

by:

Totally satisfied with price, shipping and quality. Solved my tailgate problem, while still maintaining the integrity of the Equalizer WDH system. The additional 6” allows me to drop the tailgate while still hooked to the trailer. Thanks for the prompt shipping

Toughest shanks on the planet that we have found for our customers come from etrailer and Equalizer (Progress Mfg). Don't let trying to save a few bucks put your rig at risk like the cast iron drawbar did in the photo below that was sent to me by a customer. If you buy the cheapest shanks, make sure you have good safety chains you will likely need them. Get the best from etrailer, Equalizer.

by:

I needed a longer shank for my Equalizer E4 hitch so I could open the tailgate of my truck and I wanted one of known quality so I ordered the one made by Equalizer. The spacing of the holes was identical so I was able to just swap the head over to the same hole positions. It moved the ball back six inches and since I needed a little more tongue weight anyway, the move was perfect. The extra length accomplished both goals. Great service from etrailer once again at a price that was very good and free shipping too.

The product is fine and the service from etrailer was exceptional as usual. I ordered the wrong extension, but thats not your fault. I need to replace it with the correct one sooner or later. etrailer is always the first place I check for things when I need them.

by:

I have a 2019 Ram 2500 Mega Cab 6.4 bed and this gives plenty of room for the tailgate to be down for hauling my golf cart. The shank is very heavy duty. As always, etrailer has fast shipping and great resources that helped me to know this was exactly what I needed.

by:

Allowed me to put my golf cart in the back of my truck with the tailgate down and still pull my camper.

by:

Looks Good so far.
will install it this
weekend.
and use it next Thursday.

It’s nice, shipping was quick

Quick delivery and was exactly what I n eeded

My husband wanted this 18" thingy so he could put down the back tailgate on the truck with the RV attached. He took the truck and the RV to our local RV place. For a couple of packs of soda and a big smile, they put this on for him. He could have done it with some effort. But, they had the tools and the time. He is now very happy. He says every time, everything he has bought from etrailer has been the exact product he has wanted. Never a problem.

Perfect!

by:

perfect fit and a timely delivery.

by:

The 18" long, 4" drop Equal-i-zer shank was the perfect replacement for my current shank. I now have enough clearance to drop my tailgate in virtually any position with my RV attached. All I had to do is remove the old hitch and transfer it to my my new shank (about 5 minutes). I should have done this years ago.

by:

Was truly excited to follow my order from being place to my front door. Upon going to take the package from my front stoop I noticed that the packaging had been destroyed. I opened the box and the amount of scratches on the shank will result in a rusty mess.

We went from a 1994 Chevrolet C1500 to a 2018 F150. The receiver hitch was 3” higher on the Ford. The shank we had would not give me enough drop and the F150 tailgate could not be opened without hitting the RV’s tongue jack. This shank solved both problems. Excellent!

by:

I bought the extended shank as we have a golf cart. I am able to tow with the golf cart in bed of truck while towing our Jayco Jay flight with no problems. I have about 2 inches clearance between the tail gate and my electric tongue jack. I have had no issues, even while making tight turns. This is a well built overall a Great product.

by:

This hitch extension works great. I am able to lower my tail gate down now. I have zero issues with it.

by:

Love that I can keep the tailgate down. Also can take sharper turns backing up!

by:

What a beast! I needed this to lower the nose on my Trailer slightly and to be able to open the hatch on our 2015 Yukon with the trailer attached. THis heavy hunk of iron fits the bill.

We needed about 3” in extra length. This provided 6” and works perfectly.

As usual, the shipping and CS from etrailer was stellar. The product was slightly delayed at the mfr and they were very helpful in further holding the shipment as we were out of town during the updated delivery timeframe. So, as scheduled, I got an email the day we agreed upon that the shipment was leaving. Two days back home and everything showed up.

by:

I needed some extra length so that I could haul a Razor Trail SxS in my pick up bed with the tailgate down while pulling my 34’ trailer. I thought about a hitch extension, but that cut my tongue weight by 1/3- 1/2. I found this extra long hitch shank that provided an extra 5 “ of length. It appears strong. I tried it and now I have a tighter turning radius that should work. I also bought tailgate bars to add strength to the tailgate supports. Paul at etrailer was great to work with, and the part arrived within a few days.

by:

Works Perfectly!!! Exactly what I needed!!! Great product!!

by:

Just as described. In stock and shipped immediately. You guys rock!

  • How to Tow with the Tailgate Down on a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
I am assuming by heavy duty sway control system that you have a weight distribution system, something like part # EQ37120ET. If that is the case then your best option to consider would be an extended shank. The longest shank we offer is the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank part # EQ90-02-4600 which measures 14" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the adjustment hole. This may or may not allow for the tailgate on your truck to be laid down with the system attached but you...

  • How To Tow with the Tailgate Down on a 2018 Ram 2500
I do have options for you but the traditional hitch extenders like the Hitch Box Extension and Reducer part # RP45292 that you are looking at will reduce your towing capacity too much to be used with your trailer most likely. Therefore, the best option I have is a weight distribution system with an extended shank, the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank part # EQ90-02-4600 and the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37121ET. I understand you may not need weight distribution but...

  • Tongue Weight Rating Of Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank part # EQ90-02-4600 Explanation
The 600 to 1,400 lbs tongue weight rating of the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank part # EQ90-02-4600 is based off of what system this shank will work with. If your Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution system is rated for 600 to 1,400 lbs the bolt holes of the shank are compatible with the head. For example the system part # EQ37120ET is rated for 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs so EQ90-02-4600 is compatible. The position of the rise/drop of the shank does not affect the tongue weight rating of...

  • Extension For Weight Distribution Hitch To Prevent Truck From Hitting Trailer Cap When Maneuvering
I have a couple options that will help you extend your weight distribution hitch. First the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26. This will fit your 2-1/2" receiver and also reduces it to a 2" receiver. It moves the hitch pin hole back 7" giving you an extra 7" of clearance. With a weight distribution hitch the extender has a capacity of 1,000lbs tongue weight and 10,000lbs total trailer weight. Without weight distribution it will only support a trailer with tongue weight of 500lbs...

  • Solution for Gaining Clearance Between Tailgate and Trailer Jack with Weight Distribution System
Hi Jeff! I do have a couple solutions for you, however you won't be able to use a separate hitch extender with your Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System when towing. The kind of torque that a weight distribution system puts on the hitch connection, along with the kind of combined tongue weight you're looking at with the Rockwood Trailer and loaded ATV, will just be too much to ensure safe operation with a hitch adapter in place. All of this together will simply create too much instability....

I'd recommend using a reducer sleeve like the Curt # C45405, which would allow you to use the # EQ90-02-4500 which is 18 inches long and offers up to a 3 inch drop or a 7 inch rise or the # EQ90-02-4600 which is also 18 inches long and offers up to a 4 inch drop or an 8 inch rise.

  • Longer Weight Distribution Shank Recommendation for Clearance to Open Tailgate
The solution you came up with is the best solution to allow you the needed tailgate clearance. The Equal-i-zer shank part # EQ90-02-4600 will give you the clearance you need and while it is longer the added length would not significantly change the weight on the rear of the vehicle.
