Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the 12 inch long Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank, this one has an eight inch rise and a four inch drop. Now, this shank here is made to fit the 400 pound tongue weight, 4,000 pound gross towing weight Equal-i-zer weight control hitch. The shank here is what offers a maximum of a four inch drop or maximum eight inch rise. The adjustment holes right here that your head will attach to has an incremental adjustment between each hole of 1 1/4 inches, center to center. Now, this does measure 12 inches long, and that's measured from the very end to the very end, so there's 12 inches long, and it is designed to fit into a two inch by two inch trailer hitch opening.
Now, when you do install this in your hitch receiver, it will require a hitch pin and clip to secure it, that's not included, we do sell those separately on our website, and the hitch pin hole diameter's 5/8 of an inch. Now, this is constructed with a nice, sturdy steel, has a nice hand dipped paint finish for corrosion resistance and long lasting performance. Now, when you do attach your Equal-i-zer head to this, it will require a 5/8 inch shank bolts to hold it in place, and those we do sell separately, they're not included, we do sell those separately on our website, and they are listed on this product page as a related product, and they go by part number EQ90-02-9400. And this part is made in the USA. Specs again, fits a two inch by two inch trailer hitch receiver, has a tongue weight of 400 pounds, and an overall length of 12 inches.
But that should do it for the review on the 12 inch long Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank with the eight inch rise or the four inch drop..

Mobile technicial said he had never seen a hollow shank before.
etrailer/staff is great, as well as the product......it is perfect for my installation on a medium size SUV that is sensitive to tongue weight. Needed it fairly soon for vacation and they exceeded expectations.......thumbs up !
Works as advertised! No complaints.
Works perfectly!. Solved our turning radius problem between our trailer A-Frame mounted bike rack (Lippert Jack-It 2) and the canopy on our P/U.
My Tahoe hatch would hit my RV jack when opening. Adding this shank made it open completely, without hitting. One thing to remember is to check your safety chains length. To insure they reach to connect to you tow hitch.
My experience with etrailer was wonderful! I have an equalizer hitch and switched vehicles and the shank I had would not work. I went on the web site and used the the tool to figure out what shank I needed, ordered it and received it on time as promised! The company sent me a verification email of my order and I had no problem tracking it. Very professional company!
Turned out, to be just what I needed. I have 5.5ft bed in my truck. Pulling my trailer now allows me to drive with the tailgate down and my dirt bike in the bed. Only thing to keep an eye on is your turning radius, it's not as tight. Overall, well built. But if the hitch pin hole was 2 inches longer, it would help with the turning radius. I like it.
Just what I needed to get my load distribution hitch balanced properly
Etrailer customer service was very helpful
This will definitely allow you to open the tailgate on your truck with the trailer attached. It will also increase your effective tongue weight by 60% and make any breeze pull your truck around like a matchbox car. I used it once then went back to a standard shank. I’d rather disconnect my trailer than get pulled off the road.
Great product and I will now be able to open my tailgate with the trailer attached. An upgrade to my power jack prevented an open tailgate. Great service and very fast delivery. Allstars!!
I haven't used this hitch shank yet but it looks and feels pretty solid. It took a total of three days from order to doorstep and that's awesome. I emailed trailer with questions and they were answered the next morning. The answers were very professional and to the point. I have ordered from trailer before and they have always delivered a good product quickly.
I needed the longer shank to to clear my lift gate hitting my propane tanks. Works great!!! Came 1 day sooner than expected
Bought it so I could open my tail gate when hitch to the trailer. The tail gate would hit the electric tong jack. On some jacks you can easily modifiy the jack to turn to side ways position. In my case not a simple mod. So I went to 18 inch shank.
Great for those that need a bit more room between the trailer jack and tailgate while hitched up!
This hitch gave me the extra clearance I needed to be ble to open my tailgate with the trailer in place. It changed the flex point on the trailer ball a little but not enough to make a difference. It solved a problem for me.
This thing is a BEAST. Haven’t installed it yet, but the overall length is going to work out well. The shipping box was damaged as was the paper wrapping. Did it affect the shank… no. One massive piece of steel.
Required a longer shank in order to completely drop my tailgate when towing our travel trailer. Initially notified by eTrailer that this particular shank was out of stock, and they offered an alternate. Chose to wait; surprised that stock was replenished sooner than expected. ETrailer staff were proactive keeping me informed.
This was a great purchase I have a ram 1500 with a 5 7 bed. I was hesitant that I would not have enough clearance for the golf cart with the tailgate down but after finding this wdh it did the job. Of course I had to lengthen my chains and extend my 7 pin cable but this does the job and worlds great with the weight distribution. My first time out I got stuck in a tight camping spot but even in a tight spot never made contact with my tailgate. I absolutely recommend and will post pictures. Ram 1500 5.7 hemi
This is a BEEFY hitch shank. Works perfect with my Equal-i-zer weight distribution system.
Easy switch over to longer shank .
No major adjustments on WDH setting
Now can open tailgate all the way.
Did need to lengthen safety chains.
Allows me to tow a travel trailer with my tailgate down (2011 Ram). I did not notice any difference in feel when towing compared to my previously shorter shank. There is no issue with the travel trailer hitting the tailgate- the length is perfect. This is much safer than using a hitch extender. The bolt pattern mated to my existing Husky brand hitch head.
I needed the extra length of this hitch shank to get my trailer hitch ball out from under the spare tire on my Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.
It works absolutely perfectly and is built extremely strong.
I am using with an Equal-i-zer hitch system, but would be suitable for most other weight distributing hitch configurations if the centering between the adjustment holes is correct for your ball mount.
I'm now able to open the tailgate of my truck with the trailer attached. Side effects of using the longer shank are; power cable almost too short and original safety chains were too short and had to be replaced. But, the goal to be able to open the tailgate with the trailer attached was accomplished.
I purchased this to replace my 12” long hitch. This allowed me to keep my tailgate down and pull my camper. The hitch came in 2 days and took 10 min to swap the head from my Husky Weight Distribution Hitch. Still has the same 14,000lb rating as the 12” I took off. Of course my wife and kids were happy that we were able to take the golf cart for the first time with the camper. Great product! For reference, my truck is a 2015 Sierra 2500HD duramax pulling a 2018 Cruiser Embrace EL280 @ 6360lb dry.

How heavy is the trailer you were pulling? This weight distributing shank is only rated for trailers with a 400 lb tongue weight/4000 lbs towing or less. If your trailer exceeded those specifications, the shank could indeed fail.
